toocold - 2010-04-02 4:34 PM Name: Darren
Age: 35
Location: From Edmonton, AB but currently in Brandon, MB to be with my Mom
Tri Experience: This is my first year of training.  I found this site just recently and I thought it would be a great way to add some structure to my training.
2010 remaining races: Leg 7 of the K-100 Relay Race.  I don't have a tri scheduled for this year but I am thinking of trying one this fall.

Wow, a guy misses a day and a half and there is 16 pages of posts to catch up on.  Fun group!

Nothing accomplished so far this month because I woke up yesterday with a really bad cold.  Right now I am throwing everything I can think of at it because I need to get over this quickly.  Thankfully I hadn't scheduled any training for this weekend as I was going to bring my Mom home from the hospital for Easter weekend tomorrow.  Tuesday I will be back on track.

Happy Easter everyone!

I'm in Edmonton!! I go to UofA! Haha...its like we are neighbors...

Hi Melissa, neighbors works but I was a U of C grad... go dinos Undecided

How is studying going?  My sister-in-law is in her second year of med school at u of M.  I don't envy you guys.  I thought some of my exams were cruel and unusual punishment before I saw what was expected of her.

Not right now Tim.  I took the money and put it to better use for now (don't tell anyone I said that!).

I love my 29'er but I am thinking your right on the 26" but then I might as well focus on a whole bike then.  But next year most likely because I am thinking the AZT 300 next year followed by the GDR in 2012??? - scares me even typing it!!

Are you going to do the AZT 300?  If so, we definately need to keep in touch. This is on my radar for next year.

Right now I am initially contemplating it - how vague is that   I was thinking on the way to work today that what the heck is next.  I am going to have 8K in on the bike most likely this year unless I fall off the wagon after our tour and I want to do a shorter self-support before even contemplating GDR!

Ah, come on.  It would be nice to know some people out there.  Working on my pack as we speak.  Just got a new sleeping bag: Big Agnes Zirkel SL.

What really worries me about some of these rides is the availability of water.  Its one thing to be able to filter, but when there is no water source, what do you do?  You can only carry so much.

Studying is....going....

I don't find the written exams to be that bad...but clinical exams are kind of intense and the fact that you actually have to retain (somehow) all of what they teach you...I feel incompetent when I am in clinic as well. Most preceptors are fairly patient right now, but I'm only in first year...it will be less so next year...and then third year... haha

I almost went to UofC for med...I got in there first, then UofA and decided to stay here...I swam varsity with the Pandas...so I can not support you in your go dinos support....Gooooooooooo Bears!!!

Good morning Team.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes and positive thoughts for my Mom!  She had a great weekend home and I think it was really good for her.  Being in her own space, doing some stairs, puttering around.  She also had some friends from when we lived in the North visit on Fri/Sat which was great because I didn't want to spend too much time around her until I had a handle on my cold.

I threw everything I could think of at that cold over the weekend, including a mustard pack that I apparently left on too long because I seem to have a slightly burnt chest.  I am happy to say I am feeling a lot better and I was able to enjoy a nice Easter Sunday with my family.

My plan today is to ease into training.  I am going to head out for a run right away and then I will jump on the indoor trainer tonight when I get home.

kimk - 2010-04-04 7:41 AM ... I so wish I could remember laps! ...

Not sure if thiswill help, but I count by hundreds in the pool... 1,2,3, 100, 1,2,3, 200, 1,2,3, 300....  If I'm swimming a really big set, I will finish every 100 with site breathing to help me keep the numbers straight.  Just thought I would share.  Works for me.

I've tried just about everything! I will start counting then wonder is the lap I'm on 100 or did I just finish 100, or is it the next lap...then I realize I have flipped and the whole process starts over! I have tried a lap counter and forget to push the button. I have tried things on the deck but I don't like to stop to move it over. I think I am hopeless when it comes to counting! That is why I got the nike ipod for my running even when I was doing laps on the track I would loose count!

Have you tried just going by time?  If you're pretty consistent and know your average lap time, you can just calculate how long it would take you to swim the distance you need and go from there.  I've done this before when I left my watch at home and just used the clock on the wall. Your training log can tell you your average per 100 and then you can multiply that (by 10 for 1000 or 20 for 2000) to get your total time for your distance.

got a nice 8 hours of sleep and feel great...considering it's a monday.

Hopefully the weather will clear up this week.  It's been really windy and rainy here, but looking at other people's posts, I think the weather has not been very good across the country.

kimk - 2010-04-05 8:16 AM I try to make sure it is fun for them...this is my passion it doesn't have to be theirs, but I do want them to enjoy being active. Right now I am trying to find a way for my 14 yr old to understand if you want to enter a race you need to train for it...not just show up on race day. I don't need her to be competitive but I want her to have put in the "work" to appreciate that not anyone can just do this. I don't want her training to be a job but.....   As of right now I have not pushed the training but bring up the fact that the tri is only a few weeks away and maybe she should get on her bike or even run..... She is on swim team so she get that training in.

Completely agree!  I've tried to instill upon them that it is about healthy living rather than strictly training for competition.

Absolutely.  My kids are still little (3 and 5) so there is no "training" for them.  But when they ask me WHY I have to go swim/bike/run AGAIN, I try to point out that exercise is how I try to stay healthy.  And that races are a fun way (for me) to be healthy.  And not really talk about the competition part.

My older daughter is starting soccer in a couple weeks and this will be her first really experience with practice and competition in anything.  So, it will be interesting to see how that goes.

Can you give me some of your pack information?  You run 26" Full right?  I am curious how you are setting that up!

Everything is in the works right now, but I'm leaning toward a handle bar bag, seat bag, and gas tank bag for the bike.  I have an email out to Eric from Epic Designs.  As for a backpack, I like the Osprey packs.  I'm thinking either the Talon 33 or the Atmos 35.

On the bars:

Tent:  Big Agnes Seedhouse SL (poles break to 16")  Probably wouldn't take for races
Sleeping mattress ???

Seat bag:

Sleeping Bag: Big Agnes

Gas Tank:

Food for the day
Camera

Backpack:

SPOT (Spousal mandate, not purchased yet)
headlamp
JetBoil
Food
Clothes-chamois butter
Filtration (thinking Katadyn)
compass
map
knife
whistle
Extra Platypus Bag
tubes
multitool
patch kit
pump
tooth brush-paste
wipes

This is as far as I've got.  I want to keep total weight around twenty pounds.

Heidi, are you "shoeless" because you enjoy barefoot running?  We had a nice discussion about Vibram's last month, and your screen name just reminded me I want a pair .

Nope, I wear shoes to run in, just not any other time if it can be helped!

Thanks Tim.  Have you checked out the Ergon packs also?

BTW - Spots are great!  I have one for when I do my crazy solo stuff

I have not looked at Ergon.  I'm pretty sure I'll either be going with Carousel or Epic.

Question about Spot.  I've seen some pretty negative comments about they have handled the recent recall of the Spot 2.  Any comments or negative experiences?

Well I was planning on a road ride this morning, but my wife left my tights in the washer!  Errrrrr....  So, changed the plan and went for a little run.  Pace was pretty pedestrian.  My legs are still sore from running stairs three days ago.

Planning on taking the boys to the movies later, baseball practice, then hopefully to the pool for my first swim of the month.

Nice!  I'm the same way. . . Growing up, my main sports were swimming and Tae Kwon Do.  Even as an adult, my favorite is yoga.  Apparently I generally like being shoeless as well Wink

Just finished a 22 minute run (a bit over 2 miles) at school.  Running on Asphalt sucks.  I felt ok while I was doing it, but I am feeling slight twinges in my shins now.  I probably should have mixed in a little more walking.

Did it work this time?  I think my computer at work might block uploads?????

Anyways, these stairs are down at the beach.  They connect the beach parking lot to the homes on the bluff above the Capitola village.  My firehouse is located a few minutes from here.  So, every once and a while, we'll take the engine over and run these in the morning.  The stairs are roughly 5 to 6 building floors.  We did this 10x with pushups then ran half mile for warm down.  Great workout, but I always get really bad DOMS afterwards, especially in the calfs!

Howdy Mel - sorry about the Asphalt but it is better than concrete

Concrete is definately the worst, especially concrete with slight grade for drainage!  HORRIBLE.  For my street runs, I try to stay off the sidewalks and run on the asphalt or dirt next to concrete if possible.

Alright that puts a whole lot together - you are a firefighter not military like I suspected

And that sounds brutal.  The whole detachment or just you and a couple of buddies?

Do you have fitness tests to pass every year??

Sorry - LOL

We have a mandatory fitness program.  Shift starts at 0700 and we are expected to be working out from 0730-0830.  I have a really great crew that takes the physical training to heart.  Doesn't get much better than getting paid to workout!
