pdbman - 2010-05-20 11:25 AM So Bill. Are you getting nervous for your upcoming ride? Its not too far off. Is this a totally self-sufficient ride or are you having some sort of support along the way?
I'd be a bundle of nerves at this point. I'm always forgetting things so I would be putting things together already and double checking the list and can guarantee I would still miss something.

I am all set.  I have some stuff to get ready but I am so Type Z - whatever happens happens!!!!

My buddy is like you - which is not a bad thing - I will be stopping at some bike shop buying something I have 3 of at home   He won't be!!

Hopefully you'll have some kind of GPS that will guide you to an LBS or other shop when the need arises.

We just had a good laugh here in the office. A guy that sits by me (Brett) just called someone on the phone and when they answered he said "Hi, this is Julie." I think I'm going to get a new name plate for his cubical.

Hopefully I pack everything and don't need to worry about it - but I am guessing that is not happening.  I still need a front rack and to decide if I am using this bike for sure - LOL -  sad!!!

You still have almost two weeks. You have plenty of time to decide.

You guys are giving me a complex.

I have nothing - just my bike, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad so far.

Rear rack and pannier is good but nothing up front either.

Better get moving!

That's all you need right? Who needs crazy things like a tent to keep the rain off while sleeping, clean underwear, toothbrush, and stuff like that. You can stop for food as needed and get tubes etc at LBS along the way. Sounds like you're set to me.

Nice 6am swim in the ocean this morning.  Water was 53 degrees, which wasn't much colder than the other day, but we ended up with a nice little ice cream headache today.  Oh well, the more I swim in the ocean, the more I hate the pool!

Got a short bike ride in tonight.  Had to return a game to blockbuster then took a short ride to see if moving my cleats back would help with toe numbness.  I think it helped some, but didn't cure it.

Any other suggestions for toe numbness?  Right now I have spd pedals and use mtb shoes.

Missed my morning bike ride (it was supposed to be my long ride - hour and a half).  I got a horrible night sleep... Please pardon me while I rant for a minute, or five.  Skip this if you have anything of importance to do...

Sometimes, I let people that are A-holes get under my skin way too much.  At my 10yo daughter's softball game last night, I got so pissed at the other team's coach.  He basically told his catcher that if our batters weren't stepping out of the batters box when a runner was stealing, he should throw the ball and intentionally hit the girl in the batters box so the girl running would be out.  I called him out on it and said he couldn't be serious.  He then yells at me telling me that I need to do a better job of coaching my girls or they're going to get hurt.  I'd say half of my girls are in their first year of softball, so they don't know the nuances of the game.  But instead of keeping my composure, I got up in this guy's face and basically told him he was a disgrace to youth sports and he should be ashamed of himself.

He's the type of coach that yells at his girls when they strike out rather than saying, "good swing, you'll get the next one."  One of my girls even pointed that out to me... "Coach Bill; why is he so mean to his girls?"  My daughter was visibly upset with my altercation out on the field and kept asking me if I was OK.  I said that it's a game, we had a disagreement, and we all shake hands at the end and say "good game".

So at the end of the game, I go to shake this guy's hand, he looks at my hand and starts to walk right past me.  I put my hand on his shoulder and held out my hand and said, "Is that really the type of coach you want to be?"  He half-heartedly shakes my hand, grumbles and walks away.  My blood has been boiling ever since.  What kind of person is this that's teaching our kids "sportsmanship"?  I'm going to call the program director today to give him the story, but why can't I let this go?

I can totally identify with what you went through. I get the same way sometimes. I hope the director will do something about it but I'm afraid that they are probably short on volunteers to coach and so have to use what is available. I think the kids usually are out there to have fun. Unfortunately there are parents like the other coach that can ruin it for the rest of us.

Too many nights with not enough sleep leads to rough days. Spent most of my free time running around. Can't wait for graduation to be over but something tells me things won't slow down then either. Was finally able to get out for a run last night at 9:30 and it was a much needed break from things. Got back feeling much better.

Don't let it go Bill - call the director - that guy needs to find a new way to spend his free time!

Use the story at practice and teach the girls about life!!!!

Very wise Bill.  I tend to stew on these things and don't always pick up on the teaching opportunities.

We just got back from our appointment to get shots before going to Mexico next month. I was thinking it would only be an hour, maybe a little more. It was almost 3 hours by the time they went through out history of shots, giving us the new ones, and going over the precautions and what to watch out for while there. I was lucky and only had to get one shot. I guess that's one of the benefits of traveling with my old job. My son had to get four shots and my wife two. I feel bad because my shoulder is already starting to ache a little. Can't imagine what their shoulders are like with the shots that they got and their shots are supposed to be more painful then mine.

I applaud you for standing up to him.  There is no place in youth sports for people to intentionally hit  people with a ball.  It is your duty to protect your girls.  If he was so upset about your batters, he should have complained to the umpire and asked him to call the runner out because of interferance.  If I was the umpire and hear a coach telling his catcher to intentionally throw at a batter, I would have thrown the coach out of the game and filed a report to the director myself.
