Hi Kathy,  It is the day after I turn 50 too!!!  I would hate to see you mess up your knee and hope you can find a way to deal with it.  I am really looking forward to it and hope to see you there.

So we were born on exact same day same year..pretty cool!

I took race walking lesson Tuesday...knee didn't like it much at all. My knee unloader brace dug in one place on my knee so I ordered some sleeves.

Not feeling very optimistic right now but time will tell.

Thanks JM2  I think I am gonna sign up for that...

Question for group:  I see some folks are actually training to walk the run...My reality is that i will be walking probably half of the run.   Should I/do I need to practice walking and running?  Anyone done IM Florida before who did a run/walk wanna give some advice?

After about 4 years of tri'ing, I started planned walk breaks and was faster.

For IMFL last year I planned to run/walk and was able to execute my plan the whole run despite being under trained due to surgery in June and time needed to recover.  It was my first IM that I didn't have a time I gave up and just walked.

In my blog one of the links listed on the right is a run/walk link that has some good information from coach McGee about why run/walk is best for most of us in an IM.

I plan on walking through the aid stations.  One, for the rest and two, so I don't spill everything.  Now that is the plan at this point   We'll see.  My plan could go right out the window.

Kicked up the training today.  First 4 hour ride in quite a while, just a little over 74 miles.  My butt is sore, my legs are sore, heck even my shoulders are sore   Stayed with the faster group for the first half (coach wanted me to push it a bit).  But, that showed me how NOT to ride IMFL.  Slower first half will be much better than fast first half.  But it also showed me I can push it on tired legs if needed.  So overall it was a good ride.  First long ride with the Adamo saddle.  Jury is still out on that one.

Ran my last long run on a Friday night.  Coach wants me to switch to Sunday because if I go into the bike ride on Saturday with tired legs I don't get as much out of the ride.  So, long runs will now be on Sunday.

enjoy,

Duane

Been building for a while now and just did a PR at a recent 70.3 so things are looking good.

Is this swim always WETSUIT LEGAL?

This is off the IMFL page:

Water temperatures should hover near 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

so I'd imagine it's always been wetsuit legal.

Had a good week last week with close to 15 hours (3 bikes, 4 runs, and 3 swims).   Right on my plan.  This week it kicks up to 4 bikes, 4 runs, 3 swims and a little over 15 hours.  I feel I am in good shape moving foward and right where I need to be.  This will be my second IM and looking foward to it.  Enjoy reading everyone's information along with the problems and sucesses everyone is having.

Chris (Jeepguy) and I are heading to Panama City August 12 - 14 to do some training.  Probably will be mostly biking with a few adult beverages thrown in afterwards.  If anyone is close and wants to join us, let me know.

Hi. I tried unsuccessfully to find out how quickly this IM sells out. I'm hooked after finishing IMCDA last month, and this one is on my to-do list for 2012!

Finances are always a concern, so flying out to volunteer to ensure an entry is not feasible. So, in the past has this one sold out in minutes, hours, days, weeks? Thanks!

Congratulations on finishing IMCDA.  I heard it was pretty tough with the water at 54 degrees.  There were a bunch from my tri club that did CDA this year.  In fact, 4 of them finished hand-in-hand at about 16:45.

Thank you! The water was FREEZING! The unofficial official word from the medical tent was that the water was 52 degrees at the shore and 45ish out by the turnaround point. Brrrrrrr. That was the only part of the day where being 60-plus pounds overweight paid off - insulation!!! Despite the cold, I had the best swim of my life.

Oh yeah, that was cool how your friends finished. They made the official highlight video! That was awesome. I was only about nine minutes ahead of them, so we all got our money's worth.

silly question maybe, but is there a typical current pattern in the gulf at that time of year (race time)? or maybe a better question would be for those who have done this race multiple times....can you guys share what the current was like (direction, STRENGTH) for your swims?

Hi All,

Completed the Englewood Sprint today.  Always a great race.  Swim in the gulf with an nice bike along them water.  Swim and bike a lot better this year but run was just a little better.  Sprint in July in South Florida does not make for a good run

 Nothing until September for me.

enjoy,

Duane

I've been to IMFL 4 times, spectated and swim 3x and raced 1x. Current has always been going toward the left as you face the ocean. A lot depends on how wavy it is how strong the current is.

Maybe Sue 'socks' will chime in as she is a strong swimmer and 4x IMFL finisher.

thanks kathy....btw i just read your 2010 IMFL race report and i'm actually in the photo of you where you are running on the boardwalk with your wetsuit draped over your right arm...I was a volunteer at the glasses table, lol, tough job but somebody had to do it

yes. the current was definitely as you say, i truly hope i'm not like one of the many poor souls that i saw hundreds of meters off course due to that current...yikes

How strange and cool that you were there and my husband caught you in a photo. My husband and I worked eye glass table at IMFL a couple of years ago.

How's your training going?

kathy, ha so cool about the glasses table.......

training is going well from a consistency and lack of injury standpoint.....still wayyyyyyyyyyyy to slow, so we'll just have to see.

I read you may planning your race to where you'll walk the run.....I used the galloway walk/run deal for houston marathon earlier this year and it was awesome...I plan on using that at IMFL....my pace puts me right in there with some of the faster walkers.....all that to say we may cross paths out there

Haha you and I are in the same boat - I did IM CdA this year also, and am looking at IM FL 2012 as my next. Very funny! A friend of mine said it closed last year (for this year) in 4 hours. A few of us are going to go down this year and volunteer so we can register onsite!

Here we go again....!

HA, those are MY 4 friends/teammates - but I didn't make the highlight video

I didn't realize the water was THAT cold! Ack! Funny though, I didn't really even notice it. Yes, insulation is a great thing!
