triritter - 2011-02-24 6:45 AM Goals! Start listing you goals. Go!

For my HIM, I would like to cut at least an hour off my time from last year...lots of lessons learned last year that I am applying to my training this year... plus, with having already done the half marathon this season, my run base is solid. I'm hoping to make up at least 30:00 of time on the bike, and feel strong off the bike where I can cut another 30:00-45:00 off the run.

Ironman Texas 70.3
Last year: 7:48:46 Cry -- 2011 Minimum Goal: 6:45:00 Smile -- 2011 Big Goal: Sub-6:30:00 Surprised

I'm also looking to get down to my optimal weight...which is about 130. I'm 14 pounds away, and I'm consistently losing 1-1.5 pounds per week.

For the sprint season, I would love to come in 1st in my AG for a swim...
For the bike, a stretch goal is to average +20mph in a race...I have a lot of work to get there!
I also want to go sub-10:00/mi. on the run...this will be tough, too, since my best standalone 5K was at a 9:30 pace.
It's my last year in my AG, so I will be one of the "elders" trying to keep up with the young pups.

Other goals include trying to find an Olympic-distance race and a second HIM this season that will fit into my schedule. I'm very limited to the summer months for racing, for the most part, and unless I'm willing to travel, there's not a lot of races close to me that work.

Overall, I want to continue to enjoy every aspect of  this sport -- training, racing, camraderie. I also want to inspire others to get involved in some type of active fitness, even if it's not specifically triathlon. I'm also focusing on blogging and maintaining a website (new site is linked in the sig) to chronicle my ventures...so I hope I can stay on top of that and contribute a blog at least once a week.

Goals :

1.  5:50 - 6h Half Ironman (drop my time an hour from last year)

2.  2:45 or better - Olympic (best time before was 3 and change)

3.  Drop 10 minutes from my sprint times

4.  Improve my transition times in all races.

5.  HAVE FUN at every race.

For the HIM this year I would like to finish in  6 hrs or less; last year I was 6:57:27.  I should be able to take at least 30 min off the bike time this year and hopefully at least 20 min off the run.  If I do this I should be good.

As for the sprint races, I would like to place in the top 3 in my AG.  I have placed 2nd in the AG once (last year) and I am consistently in the top 7.  Placing in the top 3 is going to be a tough goal...my AG is competitive...but I like to challenge myself.  For the sprint runs I want to be at or under a 8:30 mile pace.  On the bike I want to Avg. 20+ miles...this has been done before but not in all races.  The plan for the swim is stay on Tif's feet to and be close to the front coming out of the water.

Improving is always a goal...so PRs in races I have done before will be a goal this year.

And to keep up with my blog writing for the new site.

setting personal best's in half marathon, sprint tri and olympic tri.

having not done any of these events before I think it pretty much in the bag.

My real goals are to complete in a way that is consistent with my training. A stretch goal would be to finish in the top half of my age group.

Goals:

I have some on my blog page, but they are morphing a bit right now.  I also have some "lesser/later" goals I haven't written down yet.

-Complete my first HIM (you all have permission to slap me if I start talking about a time I think I can get...I really need to not do that on first attempts at new distances)

-Get MUCH closer to the Marathon time I think I SHOULD be able to run (current PR 4:03, I should be closer to a 3:45 or better).

-PR Oly.  Current is 2:37, but not sure how short the course was.  Flip side is last year's race was a trail run.  YUCK.  How I suffered.

-PR 1/2 Marathon.  For some weird reason I am good at this distance...looking for a 1:41 or better.  PR is just under 1:42.

-Help at least one person get into triathlon or endurance sports (by training with them, racing with them, lending them gear, or mentoring them.  I have my eye on my SIL this year.  But hopefully other targets of opportunity will present themselves...I got three people involved last year!)

-Develop plan of attack for 2012.  DH and I are on a crazy train to one destination.  IM.  Thinking IMoo...but not sure yet.  I just know I need to have it figured out before the North American IM season starts this year.

-Despite all the required training, advance planning, and thinking with an eye for the future this sport demands, I also want to remain present in the moments of my life, both within and outside of athletic achievement...at the end of the day I do this because I enjoy it!  So I need to remember to enjoy it!!!

My goals are pretty basic

1- finish the races I have signed up for
2- have fun
3 - find a training plan that I'll actually pay attention to
4 - work on my swimming
5. Pay attention when something hurts and don't think it will magically go away
6. find a race for the fall and improve for the spring

I need some advice.  My tri is next weekend in Palm SpringsSurprisedUndecidedSurprised  I did my first one last November, but I pretty much winged most of it.  I really would like to feel somewhat prepared for this one.  I am not sure what I should do training-wise this next week.  This is my plan Sat bike (~36 miles), Sunday bike (~ 20 miles), Monday and Wednesday swim (master's swim sessions), Tuesday and Thursday run (3-5 miles pretty easy).  Friday I am planning on biking (I have to rent a bike for the race, so I want to ride it and get used to it) and swim if I can (this is going to be my first OWS - kind of.  I briefly swam in the Pacific last month for about 10 minutes, but I'm not sure that counts.

Too much, not enough?   Any advice on OWS for a sloooooooooow swimmer?  I don't think I am going to be nervous about it, but how know.

The race is a sprint - 500 m/14 (maybe 12) miles/5 k.

Thanks.

I have a few races on scheduled so I'll do goals for those time wise.

April 30th- Nashville Country Music Half- 1:45 maybe? (8:00 pace)

May 14th Siesta Key Sprint- 400S- sub 9:00, 13Mi B- avg 20 mph, 5k beach run- sub 8:00 pace.

October Siesta Key Triathlon- 800S- no idea on time, 13 mile bike +2mph average from May's race, 5K beach run sub 7:30 pace.

Flying mount onto the bike and taking shoes off coming into T2 as well as work on my overall transition skills. I just really think the flying mount is cool and I'm comfortable on a bike after BMX and mountain biking for a long time so it won't be too hard to perfect. I play around with it from time to time after my rides already.

Be injury free. But Also to take appropriate rest and be smart if I do get injured.

Enjoy training with my wife and balance both of our training schedules.

Way into the future I want to do a ironman in fall of 2013. I will be done with school in summer of 2012 and then would like to focus my extra time on longer Ironman training and with a couple years under my belt I will have some good experience.

That's it for now let me know what you think.

silly question time;

I am ordering stuff off of ebay, I have picked out a number belt and yankz but also see timing chip ankle bands. I know that chips at the races are given out but do I need a band or do they typically provide that too?

Yes, they do provide.  Or some smaller tri's actually just time you, no chip.  But unless you are worried about losing the band and want your own to be sure, you don't need one of your own.

On the time chip band, I got one that decided it wanted to come off during the swim and i had to hold it in my hand for the last half of the swim.  It had been so streched out that i had to wrap it around my ankle where the velcro didn't secure it enough.

all that to say you don't have to buy one, just make sure its tight and not going to come loose.  I have seen some folks with safety pins on theirs to keep it secure.  Although I am going to get my own and not worry about it anymore.

I am finally ready to get back in the water...It is still pretty chilly in the morning and there is a long outdoor spring fed pool that is great for open water swim training, but the temp never breaks 68 degrees.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a triathlon wetsuit that would be warm enough for about 60-70, but not hot and not really feel like a wetsuit?  I own a wetsuit for surfing, but it's a means to an end and I have never enjoyed paddling in it, much less swimming.

I would say you should have already been in the water, but it's a little early for open water swimming around here, it will probably be find by the end of the month though. If your nervous about the swim stay to the outside. Expect lots and lots of contact. Let us know how it goes.

Looks like they are are some good goals that are set, I find telling other people about them helps motivate me. I've set some big goals this year.

1) stay injury fre
2) win age group in Ironman 70.3
3) reduce swim time 4-5 min in 70.3
4) run under 80 minutes off a legit hard/fast bike in 70.3
5) become or be able to compete w/ the legit pro's by the end of year or next season.

Main goal this year is to stay healthy.  If that can happen, the rest of these goals are attainable I believe.  I'm focusing more on time goals rather than age group placings because you can't always control your place.  My feeling is that if I hit my times, the place will happen.  Two of these tri's will be my first time.  I hope to have a wetsuit this year for the swim.  I will only be riding a road bike with no modifications so my bike split could be better I suppose.  Need to prove to my SO that triathlon isn't going anywhere so maybe a tri bike for next year's racing season.

The Dam Tri (olympic) - sub 2:20
Willow Creek & Presque Isle (sprints) - sub 1:10
5k - break 18
Half Marathon - break 1:25

We'll see.

OR...get SO on the crazy train with you...that's how I handled it at my house.  Funny thing is that I'm a better runner in my AG than he is, but I think he's going to kill me in triathlon...

You have a nice roadie, I don't think it's gonna hold you back much with the engine you've got!  Good luck!

Weekend...DH is on night shifts, so I am alone with my spawn...fortunately the gym has treadmills, a pool and two hours of babysitting...so I should be able to knock everything out...gosh, maybe a spin class on Sunday for my bike...hmm...

F:  1h swim, 30 m hi RPM spin, Core
S:  30 m Z2 run, ST, maybe some EZ drills in the pool
Su:  1h Z2 bike, Core  (would like to ride computrainers with the team, but don't think I can leave the kids        at home with sleeping DH...boo)
Mo:  45 m Z1-Z2 run, ST (my training week ends on Mondays for scheduling purposes)

Man, I need a nap already...

Fri: 45' of hard gear work on the trainer, strength, core -- DONE! This afternoon & evening I will be enjoying watching Florida Gator baseball then New Jersey Devils hockey (I know I have an odd combination of sports favorite affiliations...especially being from Texas).

Sat: 20 miles on the bike, 3000yds in the pool

Sun: 8mi run

It's been a satisfying week for me. I have fallen in love with the early morning workouts, and my body is feeling great -for the most part -in dealing with the increased distance and intensity this week. Can't believe Sunday will be the 6-week mark until the HIM.

My biggest goal this year is to be consistent and injury free without making my family crazy. DH is running his first marathon this fall so we'll have to juggle schedules quite a but come summer. Other more flexible goals:

-sub 2 hour hm
-finish FOP for all tris with the exception of my HIM since I've never done that distance
-sub 25 5k
-average 1:45/100yd in the swim for at least one race
-run my entire marathon with no walking

For this weekend:

F-2500 swim (DONE), beat off migraine with a large stick, 3-4 mile run
S-2:00 bike on trainer, 2 mile easy run
Su-8 mile run

I'm trying to add a fifth run day into my schedule to get my long run closer to 30% of my weekly volume.  I really really want a solid base to avoid injury.
