Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Open again Hey all! Next week I return to training. My goal for my next HIM is to be much stronger on the bike. Finish faster and fresher than NOLA. So I am doing Jorge's bike training program. Did it in 2009 and it kicked my tail but helped me a lot. I have next week off then start my new job. For the current challenge I will leave the teams as is and we will start a new challenge on May 1st. So, for the current challenge how are the numbers looking folks? |

Member 34 Burlington | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Open again Room for one more? My winter mentor group has petered out, and I need a group to report into, send inspires to and get inspires from to keep me going. Training for my first 10K in 5 weeks (only up to 5K now) and from there going on to some sprints and an Oly in September. Let me know! -- Kim |

That is one of my greatest opportunities to improve. I've been told to swim in a pool with my eyes closed - you'll know which side you drift to from bouncing into the lane lines and will be able correct your stroke accordingly.

That is one of my greatest opportunities to improve. I can definitely use improvement there also. For me, consistantly sighting every 6 strokes has helped a lot. Also, I need to work more on my sighting so it does not slow my stroke as much. Really the best thing is OWS practice with others. Current, chop, other swimmers, etc are things that are hard to simulate. |

Veteran 306 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed I have a question for the group: How closely do pool swim times (with flip turns) correspond to open water swim times? I just did 2x1000 and held about a 1:30 pace in the pool. I felt like I was keeping good speed but wasnt killing myself - probably about the same effort that I'd do in a tri and I could have held the pace for a long time. Given good OWS conditions (not too windy or too choppy or too many people in my face), how fast should I expect to go? |

Given good OWS conditions (not too windy or too choppy or too many people in my face), how fast should I expect to go? It depends on how straight you swim and how well you hold your form. Given you are swimming 1:30's, I'd say your form is probably pretty good. I'll hazard to guess a slight slow down, like 1:40's. I base this on my slow swim times of 2:00-2:10 slowing to 2:20-2:30 in open water. |

Given good OWS conditions (not too windy or too choppy or too many people in my face), how fast should I expect to go? First, congrats on holding a fast pace like that! The problem with projecting a speed in OW is that there are a heck of a lot of variables. Where you start in the pack, number of swimmers you have to deal with, number of turns (most folks don't swim around buoys properly and lose a lot of time) and how straight you swim. My favorite is putting the timing mat 100yards up the hill! That said 1:40-2:00 would be a good range. In the pool I can hold a ~1:50-1:55/100m for 500-1000meters and in my last OWS I avgd 2:02/100m for 800 meters (out and back) if that helps. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Kim - Welcome!!! Actually, finishing the race feeling like you are going to puke is a good thing. Means you had nothing left to give. Either way, welcome to the group. Did the first test of JorgeM's bike training plan and now have my HR for the rest of the plan. Actually ended up being the same rate as I had last time just a faster time. Going to spend the next month concentrating on the bike. For me to improve my next HIM time means faster bike split and fresher legs for the run. Will have the list up tomorrow. |

Regular 60 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Two questions...Neck pain on the bike...whenever I ride more than 20ish miles on the road I get pretty intense neck pain. Anyone else experience this? Do I need to raise my handlebars? Or do I need to get a professional bike fitting (difficult with a baby at home). The weekend rides get longer and longer and the last 30 mile ride I suffered for about a week with the neck strain...Trainer question...just bought a Kurt kinetic fluid trainer - do I need to buy a trainer tire? From what I read the trainer can ruin the back tire. Should I just shut up and get on the trainer or wait and order a trainer tire? |

I did the first 10 weeks or so of Jorge's plan until it became too much with my NOLA training. It's a good plan and definitely helped me. |

It's a good plan and definitely helped me. I did the 2009 version as a lead in to NOLA. I plan on shooting for 3-4x rides thru May with Sat or Sun being a long ride. After that I will probably return to a HIM plan. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Open again tedricw - 2011-04-22 12:26 PM I would like to join your mentor group. I'm 41 and have been trying to get back into shape. I currently participate in a boot camp type of expercise program 2x week and strength training. I felt like I needed a goal to aspire to so I entered a sprint triathlon for this summer. My wife intends to train with me and a coworker has also entered. I'm hoping to get hooked as many people do in the sport but mostly I just want to feel better physically and mentally. Ted Ted - I think I might have missed your post. Your most welcome!!! Please post an intro. |

Veteran 306 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Hey Gary, you left my name (Elizabeth) off the list but got all of my races. Thanks for doing this. I'll try and "friend" everyone after work tonight. Question: I was just diagnosed with piriformis syndrome (runner's butt) and am taking another week off of running. This week will be filled with icing, stretching, anti-inflammatories and physical therapy. Hopefully it wont hurt to ride my bike. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long till you were able to run again? |
