I got to the Unite Half Marathon @ Rutgers an hour early this morning and was ready to go.  Then the announcer says that the race is going to be turned into a 10 miler because of flooding.  A couple of the parks that the race goes through were under water.  I was really bummed and considered leaving but didn't.  I'm glad I stayed.  Knowing it was a bit shorter allowed me to go a bit harder.  I finished in 1:18 with an average pace of 8:15 min/mile.  My fastest pace ever.  My watch read 9.5 miles so this wasn't even a full 10 miles.  Regardless, it was fun and the weather was perfect.

When the wind picked up it was mainly at our backs which was great.  For miles 7 & 8 I came in @ under 8 minutes a mile so I was pleased with that but paid for it for the last half mile.   I may have done better if I didn't go through a grueling 3 hour CT ride with my coach yesterday.

They still haven't published the official times and age group stats.  Looking forward to seeing those. Back in the pool tomorrow morning.

Northern ivy - 2011-04-17 2:39 AM Well, my first race is in a few hours, all my bags are packed and I am ready to roll! The game plan, you ask. Destroy the swim, kill on the bike, and murder the run. I have tapered, well. I feel super strong, I am going to keep transition super simple now I just need to make it happen. I will surely report back later.NB, why has nobody mentioned how absurd one piece tri suits look? Yikes, hopefully no pictures. I look like one of those bad old school wwf wrestlers!

Great....then do we we need to pick a song for our entrance????   (Son watchs WWF)

Congratulations!  I would be delighted with a sub 10 min pace! My mile pace is around 10 1/2 mins\mile, about a min faster than my first half marathon about a year ago....

I've been a little quiet on here- first race of the year this past Sunday.  What I learned:

-I kinda know how to swim

-I don't know how to ride a bike in 20+ mph winds

-My PF foot hurts after a race!

I did a race report if you'd like to get a laugh!  ->

Congrats on your finish!! Thanks for sharing the race report.  Sorry about your foot, that's great determination to still do the event even though you had to walk the entire run course.  Great job, keep on tri'ing!

Thanks for the compliment Steven- I don't know if it's more stubbornness than determination!  I hate standing on the sidelines.

Here's my summary of the past week.

I started working with a tri coach and it has been really great. I love having somebody else build my training plan and I love having the confidence that if I just follow the plan I should do well in my races. Hopefully Apart from a technical issue that left me bicycle-less 4 miles into my ride on Sunday, I have been able to stick with the plan.

As for the rest of the week, I am leaving for a quick trip to Disney World tomorrow and for the first time in my life I have training gear and clothes on my packing list. I'm bringing pretty much everything except for the bicycle and the trainer    I am not sure how it is going to work out, since I am not used to getting up before 9AM when on vacation. Could somebody please call me at 7AM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday? I tend to ignore the alarm clock

Well, my first race is in the history books.  My full race report is on my blog at www.northernivy.com.  I have not edited it yet but it is posted as draft.  Net...Net.  Horrid swim, hammered the bike.  Ran my fastest 5k ever (but this is still slow).  I took home a 3rd in the clydes category and I was 73 out of 195 total.  The winds today were brutal and I was able to come off the bike 21st (ya now you know how bad a 9:34 mile pace is) with a 21.4 mph average.

Headed to bed early as today wake up was at 4:30.  Thanks for all the support.  Other than the really bad swim I am happy with this as a first effort.

Congratulations on your first race! Looks like you did awesome... 21 mph average= a very strong bike rider!

Looks to me like you had a great race! I understand the PF, that can be a tough one. I am going through some achilles tendinitis right now and running with foot issues is terrible. As for racing, our first tri here was similar to yours and I wore a warming cream on my arms and legs instead of tights/ warmers and in 40 degree weather I did fine with no jacket or long sleeves. It is called DZ nuts and was made for cold weather riding. That may help you on the cold ones.

Subject: Great goggles

I don't know about the rest of you but I have been in search of the perfect goggles since I started this sport.  Must be the weird shape of my big head but I just cant find the perfect pair.  Well my 10th purchase has come the closest....

http://www.trisports.com/blueseventy-vision.html

I love these!  By about the 30 minute mark a small amount of water does sneak in, but never enough so I have to stop and dry them out.  Great slightly over sized lenses with perfect peripheral vision which will come in handy for spotting in races. Just finished my largest volume swim week ever @ just under 10,000 yards with these bad boys.  Did I mention I love them? lol.

Also, I finally got my new TT bike off the trainer and on the road this week.  OMG is all I can say.  It took a good 5 to 7 miles to get comfortable out there.  Amazing how much less control you have in Aerobars but the speed is awesome.  This was my "easy spin" of the week and I averaged the same MPH as I have in the past on my road bike while trying hard.

Hope everyone is having fun training out there!

I am back from my trip. Overall, not an impressive week, but I am happy with it since I was able to have three good training sessions while on vacation and this is a first for me. Turned out Epcot and Hollywood Studios were both a seven-minute run away from the resort I was staying at. Now, where do I record all the hours spent walking around parks and standing in various lines?
