I did complete 800m but I think it took a little over 1hr. Very slow getting in and getting started. Cut off for the swim in my race next Saturday is 45min.Sucks OMG! They have cut off? I'm doomed. Was there a current? I have not done an OWS yet, and my second race in June is in the ocean. I'm concerned with the current. Ideas? How did you cope?
Karen, don't worry about the current in the ocean. When I did IMFL it was not that bad going out and coming in you just road the waves. I would advise you doing some openwater swims before june so you feel comfortable on race day. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tmoran80 - 2011-04-25 1:50 PM Jason - you will be fine. You've put the training in and done a great job. Like Dave said you probably just overtrained a littel bit. Just make sure you are eating right to re-fuel, back off the workouts a bit and get ready for the race. You are gonna do great. When do you start your taper? gabrelsj - 2011-04-25 9:01 AM good morning everyone. i ahve been busy with life and have not had time to check in. i hope everyone is doing well. as far as training...i have been feeling real sluggish for about 10 days. i have not been able to keep up on long bike rides when a month ago i could. when we come to a hill i just blow-up. i also notinced walking up stairs was burning my quads. i started thinking "i cant walk up stairs without my quads hurting how in the world am i going to swim/bike/run for 6+ hours". i took some time off last week so i hope to feel better this week. have a great day.
my plan says that last week i was supposed to cut back to 50% volume and then this week go back up to 80% and then next week (race week) go down to 25% volume. i have a feeling it is something in my diet and overtraining. with the race being so close, i am ready for it to get here. good luck to you- this weekend - right? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mary, I don't know if I would depend on adrenaline from race day to get you through the last few miles but your on track. :-) Just keep up the workouts and your kick butt.
Court: good to hear the toe issue doesn't sound too bad! not much they do for toes anyway but rest so just baby it.
Tim: remember to still just run your race, if you have it great if not don't kill yourself trying to hang with the little guy the 1st 20 miles or so. George: Way to go on the runs! As for increasing are you on a plan? There is a methed to increasing distance/speed to avoid injuring yourself as much as possilbe. You have to be carefull if you just "wing" it. They general rule of thumb is 10% per week increase. I would pick a training plan that challenges you and stick with what it says. George that is so cool that you are doing that for someone you know nothing about! You are awsome Guy! Keith: sweet we get to see some new bike pics!!! Stinks the 1st ride has to be on the trainer! We have rain scheduled for the next 4/5 days too.

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, I have a training plan. But the plan is targeted for my sprint on 5/15, which is just a 3.1 run. Maybe after I do my sprint I'll start training for the Oly, thus building up both distance and speed over time. (assuming that i could even finish the sprint in a few weeks) Thanks for the reminder to not "wing" it and deviate from the plan, Coach.

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tmoran80 - 2011-04-20 5:01 AM KC - glad to hear your Mom is doing better. Heather - wish I could help you on that one. I have discovered I am pretty lucky and don't ever have to deal with multiple people inlanes since my pool is fairly large and I swim early. I do have a question though - Do they post average pace times for the lanes or do you have to just gauge by how fast someone is swimming? Nope - nothing is posted, just "leisurely", "medium", "medium-fast" (if there are enough lanes - some of the pools that I have been to don't have this option), and "fast". I can tell you that the people in the fast lane are the ones that I just watch in awe - they are usually amazing swimmers who are doing the fancy flip turns. the leisurely lane is usually people either pool-walking or doing a slow side-stroke. The ones in between are the iffy ones; the first time I went to a lane swim, it was nerve-wracking enough that I almost walked out.. Hope everyone's weekend is going better than mine. I had a great 2 hour hike around the off-leash dog park with the pups on Saturday, followed by a 7km bike (4km of which was into a brutal head-wind). Then I got food poisoning (or some form of stomach flu), which meant that yesterday and today were spent lying down and watching tv. Relaxing, sure (except for the stomach flu part), but not so great for my training.. I'm feeling much better now (and managing to eat solid food again - yay!), so tomorrow I'm planning to run home from work (around 7km).

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() God bless you. I lost a brother to Leukemia. Thank heavens for people like you. You're a superstar, the recipient and their family will be eternally grateful I'm sure. Thank you.
gkao - 2011-04-25 2:51 PM Had a real good run last night also. Again, 4 miles without stopping. I think I may be getting the hang of this. Question: should I be increasing my distance/endurance, or should I be trying to increase my pace? Ideally, both. But if I had to focus on one thing, what would you recommend? Training over the weekend is always tough with the little kiddies, especially this weekend with Easter get-togethers. Sounds like most of you got good training in over the weekend. Coach, you had PM'ed me about my blog entry. I figured I'd just let everyone know. 20 years after first signing up to be on the registry, I was identified to be a match for bone marrow donation. The patient is a 63-yr-old male who has leukemia. That's all I know about the patient. So I took one day last week to go through a whole day's worth of testing at the hospital to make sure I'm healthy enough to donate. I passed, and my donation date is 5/12, 3 days before my first sprint. I asked the doctor if I should be healthy enough to race, he indicated that I should be fine. So as we get closer to donation date, I'll probably be taking it easier on the training. It's all good.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tim - glad you're feeling better. Flu sucks. Your marathon is pretty soon isn't it? (NO MORE SICKIES NOW. We're done with that cr*p for the season please folks.) Keith - YAY on the new bike! piccies asap please. KC - I use a Garmin 305. LOVE (love, love) it. Every time I use it I announce how much I love it lol. It's not pretty but I dont care. I love being able to see where I have been, how far, pace etc. Look on Amazon. It's probably one of my favorite purchases to date. Jason - You are getting close to your HIM too aren't you? May 7th? Took the day off work today and went to ride the course again. last time I was at 13.2 mph, this time I was 15.2 mph. I think it's a combination of having biked more and who I was riding with. Either way I was happier with it. I finished last season at almost 17, so I clearly have some room for improvement still. (did I mention how much I love my Garmin? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team. Thanks for all the info on the Garmen - I think I like the 310XT but the price is a bit steep I started my Junior Golf Coacing tonight at one of the local clubs. We were supposed to be on the range but the weather is just terrible here so we did some work inside tonight. Looks like a great group of kids and I am looking forward to spending the summer with them. Jason - rest is ok sometimes, I need to remember that as well. Kevin - Welcome back safe and sound. Hope you had a great time. Brian - way to stick with it and carry on with the swim. I will be thinking about you tonight when I get in the pool and think about ending my work early. Court - Ice that toe George - as the Coach has told me - 10% per week is a good rule and I want to say it is awesome for you to do what you are doing. Keith - congrats on new bike - can't wait to see the pics. Heather - sorry about the sick tummy, drink fluids and hope you are feeling better soon. Deb - hey - nice ride Off to the pool tonight. Had a good run this afternoon even though it was on the mill - will the rain ever stop Have a great night everyone. PS - this is a great team! PSS - hope you are doing ok Jen - don't let that swim get you down. God knows I have been there (a bunch of times) but everyone here has picked me back up and I keep trying - you re going to be awesome. KC

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen - Don't forget to try to enjoy the swim. I noticed I would have an easier time with it when I looked forward to my swim workouts as opposed to dreading them. It's supposed to be fun! Try smilling between sets. ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team. I hope everyone had a great day. Just got back from the pool - it was ok - no great shakes but what the hell I figure I am another few laps closer to getting better - at least I hope that is the case I have decided (at least for now) to take tomorrow off from the pool and do a real nice long bike, just not sure when I am going to get it done - tomorrow afternoon or evening. I have some juniors to meet at the course tomorrow to help me build an arc since I think we are looking at about 40 days and nights of rain ahead of us here - LOL. So, depending on whether we are able to do the coaching session from 4-8 I don't know exactly when I am going to get the work out in but I will figure it out. Have a great day tomorrow everyone. KC |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Make the rain go away!! We have had 10 straight days of raim and almost 6 inches in the month or April. Starting to drive me nuts.
Just had to get that off my chest. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you guys for all the positive motivation. I did go back to the lake to give it another shot. It was very windy but I sucked it up and got back in. I was solo so I stayed near the shore. I only did about 500m in 20min. I did breast stroke for a bit and when the windy got worse I practiced my stroke in the shallows. Im feeling better and I am planning for more OWS over the summer. I'm also planning on swimming lessons!!!!! As for Saturday I will focus on relaxing and enjoying the swim...Thank you again. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another 5:30am swim done! I don't know how you guys get up early and workout. I go to the pool swim and come home and take a 30min nap and it still earlier than I would normally get up. For those of you in masters swim course how long (distance) do you swim? We don't seem to swim very long, as we do a warmup on our own then about 500 of drills, then a "main" set which today was 4 x100 25 pace 25 all out. Everything has rests between sets. I am used to maybe a couple rest but not after every set and only swimming a 1500 or so. Off to a meeting have a great day

Good Morning Coach. I have not taken the leap to join a Masters Program yet. I don't feel like I would fit in to be honest (I know, I have to quit being so self conscious about my swimming). I am thinking that after this summer I will join one in the fall. Have a great day.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice job getting up early! We've got 3 different groups going on - the "great" swimmers usually do anywhere from 2800 to 3500. She then knows the sets down from there. mid group does about 2500 and the beginners from 1500 to 2000. Rests aren't put in workout and are done between main sets. razorxp - 2011-04-26 7:36 AM Another 5:30am swim done! I don't know how you guys get up early and workout. That's what I was thinking I am used to doing 1.5-3 miles per swim when I actually go on my own (alot of speedwork and pacing drills). I am far from a great swimmer but in our masters group I would say I'm the strongest swimmer along with one other person and we have our own workouts set for us but were still very low in the volume department. I won't question all the drills if my speed increases, but if not there is no way I'm doing 1/4 of the workout doing some tpress swim (I suck at it too) lol. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally tried out my new bike! Big difference! Feels real smooth! My only complaint is the seat sucks!!!! My butt hurts like crazy! Can't wait to hit the road Friday! See how much time I can shave off my usual course. I also joined a local tri team. Hoping I can meet upwith some of them for some workouts. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you for being a donor. You rock! masters pool opens at 5. I have to be at work at 6 (OK so on Tuesday and Thursday I'm a little late but I stay longer.) I get about 45 to 50 mins with a 400 warm-up and speed drills and form drills. That's what I use it for exclusively. If I get 1200 to 1500 in I am happy. I belong to a gym to swim longer swims on the weekend. I need to get over and do more of that. By the way, if you all are on Facebook, look me up. Scott Richardson, Normal Il. I chatter a lot! |
