Veteran 468 STATESBORO, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread my head has been in the sand I quess. However, it all became clear how close we are today. Hot snot I am getting freaking pumped baby. If the temps hit upper 90's there is a real chance I will be on the side of the road crying at mile 15 on the run course. But who cares this thing is on!!! Hot dang I am looking forward to this. Last year before CDA I was very ready to just get training over with. I feel better this go round. I hope that is a good thing and not underprepared. |

It would be an interesting sight with me putting my bike back together at the airport then packing all my stuff onto it. I wonder if I could put panniers on my tri bike ... But seriously, thanks for the info about where the airport is. I only asked because if I fly in and rent a car, it occurred to me there will be some days when I would barely use it, if at all, so I thought it was worth checking about other transportation options. Ultimately, I think I'll just wind up driving down there so my daughter and I can take a few days to see some of the sights while meandering back home. Of course, at this point, I might actually need a boat to navigate through the northwest so maybe that's another transportation option for me. Maybe one of those things that converts from a car to a boat ... Brad |

Totally opposite of my 114 ride last week. First half was right on race pace with zero wind. Headed inland for 14 mile round trip then back to the coast. By then a massive storm was coming in and I had 57 miles of hefty wind tunnel mixed with cross winds on mostly exposed pacific coast, got tossed around pretty good. Heart rate all over the place. All I wanted to do was sit down and cry or just laugh my butt off. When I was done and sent my check in person that I was back she replied "Good thing you have powerful thrusters on your vehicle Batman. Robin over and out." Yep, we pretend we're Batman and Robin when I do long rides....okay she pretends....I 'am' Batman. Tomorrow looks to be a calm 67 degrees of sunshine for my 120 I have on deck. |

I'm envious. Sounds like a perfect day. Enjoy your ride! <whine>Sigh ... after being able to ride outside the last two weekends, I'm once again chugging through a 5-hour ride on the trainer. It's like friggin' December here today. Between this and the 3-mile pool swim this morning, it's a bit of a mentally challenging day. Trying to type while riding provides a nice mental break though.</whine> |

I thought it would be a good training course since it has 800 feet of elevation over 56 miles. Ha!!! Brutal run with the heat and humidity. Training thus far paid off big time. Clocked a 4:46 and PR'd by 7 minutes. Woot!!! |

Veteran 490 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread LittleCat - 2012-03-27 2:01 PM 3Aims - 2012-03-24 5:02 PM Climbing and you butt hurting are likely because when you get onto steep climbs while seated you tend to scoot back on the saddle thus engaging the glutes fully. It can be very subtle. Had some time to think on my long run today. For those of you that are climbing experts, riddle me these answers. My ride yesterday had the most hills I have ever done. Around 3,300 feet over 117 miles. A couple of observations: - I would have thought the sharp hills would have hit the quads, but I really felt the strain more with my glutes and hips. Most of the climbs were seated, some in small ring with spinning to get me up. The quads got hit more on the false flats and long straight/flat parts. Do I need to get out of the saddle more to share the load? I don't think I was out of the seat more than 10 minutes total out of the 5:45:00 ride. - I ride with a 12-27 cassette with a standard crank. I spun out around 36 mph on the downhills and on some steep stuff peaked around 38/39 mph with around 95/98 cadence. I also had some steep climbs against the wind (3-4 total) and I actually struggled to get up a few sharp peaks at the end and had to get out of the saddle to make the climb in my 27 with the small ring. I'd guess 12-13 degree peaks against the wind. Do I need to get a 11-28 for the downhills and a little extra help going up? I have no pride and will do whatever it takes to smooth out the torque load. - Heart rate was around 143 for the 117 mile ride. Do you view heart rate the same way with tought hills. Part of me was wondering if I should dial the heart rate pace back a few. I shoot for under 145 on century rides.
I thought of your post above yesterday at the race. I seem to have recently developed a habit of scooting back in the seat which is putting way too much load on my glutes. I felt some soreness coming on and I scooted forward on the seat and it was gone. Great tip. |

It's right under the overpass at Winchester Hills which is the only up hill on that section of the course. It is well placed. You don't slow down for it. |

Going to be rough since the weather has warmed up so much down here in Mexico. But should be good in case race day is warm in St George.
Anyway... Kinda curious what others have in the way of longest days around now, already done? Still coming up? . |

Otherwise if I meet you at SH then I'll have to go back to get my car. |
