----------------------- “Somewhere, right now, Gabe is training while you are not. When you do a challenge against him, he will win.”

Oh My God, you crack me up Chris. I must admit that when Gabe took on the challenge I immediately knew we were competing for second place.

I missed that...too funny.  I especially enjoyed Gabe's apology that went along with his 4 hr+ workout.

Had a decent run today since I didn't race this morning.  It was a brisk 33 degrees with a wind chill of 29 degrees.  Heart rate was high at the start so I just kept a steady pace and didn't worry about the zones as much.  Ran on the street instead of the trail 6.59miles at average pace of 13:46, great incline of over 300ft total elevation of 600..  I'll be ready to race hills soon enough!

I started the year off with a pretty decent run this afternoon.  10.34 miles in 1:31:18.  I had planned on racing a 10k this morning but I decided the wind chill being 2 deg F was a bit too much.  So I opted to do my regularly planned long run of the week.

So I have seen lots of references to Maffetone since joining this group. I downloaded the most recent endurance book on my Kindle while on vacation and have yet to start it in earnest. Flipping through the chapters, I like what I am hearing, but it is very coming from a very different than i am used to. I followed the Running Less plan from the Furman Institute for my marathon which focuses on fewer but more intense workouts. I feel like that plan ultimately left me flat and burned out a bit come race day. So I am open for a different approach. What are the keys to following Maffetone successfully? Are there areas which can or should be tweaked? Are there any HIM plans out there that work particularly well following the Maffetone approach?

The entire method (as you're about to discover when you read through the chapters) is heart rate based training without the "zones" approach but rather a formula that is different from person to person and has a few variables.

The concept is "less is more" and it addresses training as part of fitness (nutrition and rest are just as important) and the creation of a huge aerobic engine to make your slow become faster. Ask the old group members, some of them were very skeptic and after trying it swear by it. I know I do. The majority of the training is done at moderate efforts, so you never "suffer" the workouts, and you don't finish them exhausted.

Happy new year to all!

I feel like a slacker! Love the challenge idea, not sure if I had swam today otherwise.

Increased my distance from my usual 1,100 to 1,600 yrds to go over the 30 min...and loved it. Did not measured total actual time, but the 100 yrds intervals I measured were all slightly above 2:00 so went conservative and assume 2:00/100 yrds for the total workout. Also did the initial test for the 100 push-up program last night. Will start with the program tomorrow. SImilar to Jen, hoping it will help my swimming pull.

BTW, Gabriel still owes me from help in college assignments in the 1980's, so I will appropiate a couple of his workout hours to my account. OCCUPY GABRIEL!

I also feel likea slacker but after a few too many cranberry-ginger martinis and kids who got up at 630 I'm happy that I got out at all. I ran 50 minutes(4.25 miles) w friends. I'll post to the list on Tuesday from work when I'm on a real computer and not the iPad.

For the weight challenge I need to change my weight.  We purchase a new scale this morning and the weigh in on that was 118.  However that was a few hours after breakfast but I'll use that as a start.

Mitch - 164.4

Chris - 170.8

Jen  -118

My goal is to be at 110.

Does anyone have a scale that measures the body fat?  How accurate are they?  Our last two scales have had it on there but I hate to think that my percentage is really that high.  Thought about getting a body fat submersion test done.

I've heard the scales aren't that accurate.  I think if you eat right, exercise right, and be consistent weight will come off and with it fat.  Just my two cents.

Chris:

You used the Hanson's marathon plan in the past?  Thinking of using the half marathon plan but have never been very clear on what the strength and speed workouts are.  Do you have any color you can provide based on your past experience or the plan you are following now?

Thanks,

Mitch

I have a scale that "measures" body fat. The body fat measurement is basically worthless. About once a year I get my body fat measured with a BodPod. I bet they have one at the academy. I go to the University for mine. Those are very accurate, and less of a pain than submersion.

Please understand that putting a day in gets you a point so we're all equal today, the fact that someone is way up there with the hours is irrelevant, things tend to get pretty even over time. Regardless of who ends up being the winner (most likely Gabe because he's training for Ironman) everybody will get the frequency in and THAT is what matters.

Mitch,

I did a combination of the free hanson beginner plan http://www.hansons-running.com/images/trainingplans/begmarathon.pdf
and the free hanson advance plan http://www.hansons-running.com/images/trainingplans/advanced.pdf

They are very similar. All I basically did was each day do something in between what each plan called for. They have a free half marathon plan as well. http://www.hansons-running.com/images/trainingplans/halfmarathon.pd...

Right now I'm following a higher mileage marathon plan from them that I paid $30 for. It is a lot more detailed (and much higher mileages). It starts at 60 miles per week and maxes at 80, with 20 mile long runs.

Speed workouts are short fast intervals at your 5k pace. The articles I found said for the marathon that total interval length should be three miles (for the marathoners). The actual workout you do would be something like warm up 1 mile at an easy pace. Then, your first time, run 800 yards (or .5 miles) at your 5k pace, followed by a 400 yard jog. Repeat for a total of six times. (So you are running fast a total of three miles). Then a mile cool down. Later weeks, you may increase the interval length, each time followed by a half distance jog, but keep the total distance for the intervals the same. (Just do fewer of them).

Strength workouts are longer, slower intervals at ten seconds faster than your half marathon pace. The articles I found for the marathoners had 6 total miles of intervals (at least that is what I did). So, say, 1 mile warmup. Then, the first week, run 1 mile at half mary pace minus 10 seconds, then quarter mile jog, repeat for a total of 6 times, then 1 mile cool down. For later weeks, increase interval length, each time followed by quarter distance jog, but keep total mileage at six miles. (These are what I did for the marathon).

Hope this helps.

After saying I would join the group over a week ago I am finally home and able to start posting. This group is busy and I won't be going back through all the posts but did read up on the last few and I am in for the January challenge.

Name: Leslie

Story: Started triathlons 2 years ago after a shoulder dislocation. Decided to use swimming as rehab and before long decided I would give a try a tri a whirl and loved it. Have only done sprint distances to date which I find very manageable with my active family/work schedule. Live in colder Canadian climate so running.biking outside is minimal until March.

Family: I am the mother of three young girls ages 3,5, 8 who are active in sports themselves. I work full time outside the home.

Current training: I am recovering from ITB issues and so currently not running but hope to start up again in 2 weeks. Have being using ART to recover and really hoping it helps. Otherwise train only 6-7 hours a week and really want to bump that up a bit but my main goal is to keep training consistent.

THis year's races: I haven't mapped out my race schedule but would like to try olympic distance and also a half swim/bike distance. Probably total of 5 races.

Weightloss: Currently 150 and would be much better to be around the 130 mark.

Main goals this year: Consistent training, longer distances, more knowlege on gear (I know virtually nothing!).

Great job to everyone who got training in yesterday. Unless sleeping counts- my January challenge starts today!
