Steph, I used Furman FIRST in 2010 and 2011. I made huge run gains. Good luck with it.

I know its early in the year, but I am learning so much about training. Being on the EN team is super educational. And I've read some books centered on the central governor theory of fatigue. Very fascinating stuff if you ever get time to read. It's changed my worldview of racing and training and what my limits truly can be.

To add to my last post... If you ever get a chance, read up on Tim Noakes and his theories.  Very interesting stuff.  Matt Fitzgerald also writes a lot about it.  I just read Brain Training and almost done with Iron War.  Two good books IMHO.

I had a few days off last week so decided to go up north to visit a girlfriend for a couple days.  All started out good. She had a class on Fri morning so I looked up a gym near her school and she dropped me off and I did treadmill and weights while she was in class.   We had a big snow storm in northern Michigan and on Sunday morning when I'm getting ready to leave for my 4 hour drive home, I get a call from the hubby saying that on Sat night while he was at work (at a hospital emergency room) he had a "cardiac event".

4 days of fussing with that is enough to make anyone rethink their eating habits.   Thing is the poor guy quit smoking 12 years ago, lost 40 lbs in the last 18 months, got off most of his diabetic medications and then, has a heart attack with one artery being 90% blocked and requiring a stent to be put in.  Doesn't seem fair.

Today he checked out of the hospital, I took the bike off the hook in the garage, filled the tires with air and went on a 7.25 mile bike ride. I rode right past Dairy Queen and didn't even stop. It's time to get back to training.  3.5 months till my tri, time to start picking up the pace.

I have found triathletes to be a very encouraging group. No one has made fun of me at all, in fact that have cheered me on. I am usually one of the slowest, one of the oldest, and 30lbs overweight. They are the coolest. I hope your group is the same!

I've had the same experience....  When I was a little overweight and quite slow, the runners/triathletes that I met and have become friends with are simply the best!

Sup!

Yeah .. getting in about three days a week.  Not sure about anyone else, but I find it nearly impossible to run early in the morning.  I seem to be able to run better later in the day.  Anyone experience the same thing?

Thank you guys.  You are both right.  I am amazed at how friendly and welcoming everyone is in this sport.  I truely love how great everyone one is that I have met since starting this.  I am truely blessed to have all of you as friends and on my side.

Class was great.  There are 4 of us beginners in there.  She had me run a lap walk a lap for the 30 minute run.  The other 3 beginners ran 2 minutes walk 1 minute for the duration.  The rest of the group maintaned a steady pace for their run.

I know mostly morning people...and some say that is because if they don't do it then they know they won't. Some really prefer it. Then there are folks like you, and I know a few...that can and will and prefer to run later in the day. Good for you!! Me? morning.

Today is kind of a sad day...its my daughters 16th birthday.  The time sure flys, it feels like just yesterday we were sitting around watching Barney and the Power Puff Girls.  Oh well, Daddy will just have to get over it.

Off to the gym, then a great Sweet 16 party tonight.  Going to work on stregth training and log some time on the stationary bike.

Well I went to the gym tonight and used a stationary bike I have never used before.  Wow, I really should of got instuctions on how to use it.  Didnt know how to work the computer.  I must of picked some killer work out program.  It kicked my butt.  I was only able to average 4.4mph.  I know I can ride a bike faster then that.  Well I got a work out!  Walked away with my leggs feeling like butter.  Just hoping I didnt over do it.  Have my second run club meeting tomorrow morning.  Its going to be an outside run.  Scared, but cant wait.

Now that I am limited to mostly morning workouts, I am hoping that the runs will get easier with time.  I dont notice much of a difference on the bike or in the pool, but it could be that I just notice more with my runs.

I decided to make some dietary changes and move towards a paleoesc diet.  Right now I am really just focusing on breakfast and lunch.  I have cut out almost all the cereal I was eating and substituted fruit salads, but I am still eating cereal once a week.  I will still eat the occasional pancake as well... just cant give up all the foods I love.  For lunch I have stopped eating sandwiches and moved to salads and left overs.  Dinner is the one area I haven't changed much, just reducing the amount of pasta, rice and perogies I eat during the course of a week.  I figured this would be a good start.  I am not sure if I will ever be able to fully go paleo as there are just too many foods that I love and refuse to give up.  Hopefully these changes will help me lean out my body the rest of the way.

Oak,

It sounds like you were in some sort of Hill program.  It should have a manual option that allows you to control the resistance on the bike and length of work out.

How did your outside run go today?

Well the run was ok.  The beginners were to run 2 miles.  But I pushed my self to do the 5k course.  It took me 55 minutes, although I had to walk some of it.  Waiting for the day that I can finish strong with out walking.

There is nothing wrong with run/walk. People do run/walk and do 2:45 marathons. "Running the whole thing" is SO not necessary. www.jeffgalloway.com

I cut out most also. But I have had a tough time giving up brown rice! I think all the food plans/diets have some value. If you can manage to clean up the obvious stuff (sugar, artificial sweeteners, hf corn syrup, soda-pop, chips, candy etc.) and cook most of your meals, I think you are way ahead of the game. Sometimes you have to have something you really like that's bad for you. Do it and be done.

A friend of mine prefers to run at the end of the day because her muscles are looser etc. Makes sense.

Ok I need some advice or help, which ever you want to call it.  Today was the second time I ran out side with my club, the third time I have ran not on a treadmill since I started training.  Well today I am experincing some horrible pains above my ankle region, right under the tounge of the shoe all the way around the rim of the shoe.  It was so bad, I had to walk most of my run today.  Is this because I am not use to running on a hard surface or is this an issue with not having the proper shoe?  What ever this is it has to stop.
