I was really wondering whether I should get a road bike, or cross bike, and I really am glad I got the cross bike. I am sure I couldn't have taken the road bike on a lot of the roads I have taken this bike. It's not the top of the line, but I have really enjoyed it! |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by NeverTri'd Okay everyone...HELP!!! Having problems here. Went for my only my second swim today in far too many years. First one was last week. Struggled terribly last week but had a much better time today. Still a long way to go if I'm going to compete August 10. Cant go very far without having to take a break. I feel like this will come with consistent training. Here's my problem...my left shoulder got angry at me today during my pool session. Got really tight behind my left shoulder. I did 1-100, 6-50's, and 6-25's today. First felt the tightness after the 5th 25, did one more and knew I needed to quit. I've iced it twice today and it's still a little sore and tight. What's your advice? I'm thinking about skipping my Thursday swim and spending the week on a shoulder strengthening regimine and try again next Monday. On another note, there is no way at this point that I can do the swim play that my training plan created. I'm just not in good enough swim shape. What kind of benchmarks should I shoot for for my August tri? 1/3 mile swim is all I have to do. Thanks! Bill I think you will be fine for Aug. I would back off and not risk hurting yourself more. Do you have a good local coach you could have look at your stroke? Short of that do you have someone who can take a quick video of you swimming and we can look at it? (I have been out of it for ages, but did coach a little and swam in college.) I have this thing I do with my left should when I get tired that I know is bad for it- I let it slip back into the joint. When I'm just ramping up volume and I can feel myself doing it I do a few hundred more focusing on not doing it and call it a day. |

Other than training is there anything you're thinking of doing special with the time? |

It's actually worked really well for me. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/k2-mod-40-road-bike~p~97885/ BTW- if any of you are not addicted to Sierra Trading Post yet for awesome deals on outdoor gear- I apologize for introducing you (I get great 30% off coupons I can forward if anyone wants one.) I have changed out the seat, stem, bars (twice - got nice carbon ones- then could not attach aero bars to them so had to get another pair a few years later) added clip on aero bars. it's not fancy - but it fits well and works for me. My baby is my Santa Cruz Superlight 29er mountain bike though. I way prefer that to road biking. |

What is your ride? Thor-about a 1998 trek carbon 5200 with tri bars and a 2001 Trek mountain bike. My roadie is a 2010 GT Series 4 - 8 speed sora groupset; I upgraded the wheelset to a set of Mavic Aksiums after I broke a bunch of spokes on the original no-name hubs and no-name rims. Aluminium frame and fork, but I picked it up with pedals and shoes for $400, so I'll take it. It's currently sporting a set of clip-on aerobars as well. My cross bike is a 2011 Fuji Cross Comp - 10 speed 105 groupset. Aluminium frame and carbon fork, another craigslist score for $450. Front derailleur was seized (remember friends, lubricate your chains and derailleurs - triflow is great and smells like bananas, but does not taste like bananas). $15 on eBay and I'm good to go again. My wife rides a 2013 Novara Carema, and we both have a pair of hybrids (Giant Cypress and Trek something or other) gathering dust in the garage. |

I'm only doing a few sprints this summer so doesn't seem worth it to spend big $ on a bike, but at times I do covet a nice fast roadie. Between the wife and I we have another 4500, a Specialized Rockhopper Comp, and a Trek hybrid (7100 maybe?) - we both ride the same frame size, easy to share. |

You are fine on a mountain bike...until your first race and people are flying by you on road bikes... Actually I am putting slicks on my son's MB for his races this year, although at 10yrs old, he has voiced his opinion that he needs a road bike as well. My friggin' garage is turning into a used bike shop. Kids bikes of some sort-5. Adult bikes-4.(hopefully 5) |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Raining all day today so the pool was closed and the bike was out. Decided even though I'm sweet like sugar I wasn't made of it and wouldn't melt so I went for a run. It must have been the rain because I tore it up. Did 2.38 miles and held a 10:22 pace. It was an easy/medium effort also and not a crazy race pace. This is after only running an 11:06 pace in the Jan 5k which I was red lined and I felt like puking My training runs were in the 13-14 min range also. Then it was 5 months off and I've only been back at it for 6 runs so far. |

The shoulder feels pretty good today. Just a little sensation hanging around. I expect to be pain free tomorrow. I'll actually do some stretching and therapy tonight and should know by the end of the weekend if I'm going to try some light swimming next week. I'm going to take everyone's advice and slow down. Been looking at a lot of videos and will try to improve my form. Got my aero bars today. Can't wait to go for a ride. Thunderstorms just rolled through my area. I may actually try and go in a little while. If I don't ride today I won't get to until next week! Hope everyone had a great day! Bill |

Slapped some aero bars on it, and it rocks. I have a 2003 ish Giant aero frame bike on loan to me. Much lighter and faster than the 10 speed. I used it in my half last year, and was shocked at my bike split. |

Take more than a few moments looking into a good long range training plan for you, and go after it! IM or Bust!Morning All - Thanks for posting your goals. If you can think of a way to do it better next week, please let me know. Now, take some time each day to support one another either through the forum or by "liking" a workout that one of our members did thaty day. I don't know how to get it on the forum but check my log - I have a list of everyone with links to their BT pages. Can't tell you how insiring a like can be after a tough workout. As I mentioned yesterday - I made the decision not to return to the school where I work next year. I haven't been truly happy since I've been there but thanks to them I know that what I want to do now is teach. So, yesterday afternoon, I decided to go for a ride to make peace with that decision and I crushed that ride. I track my rides on Map My Ride and I got a text this morning that let me know that I set personal records on the three sections (or courses they may be called) that I rode on... I guess my body and bike are happy with my decision. I will now have the time next spring to focus on training for an IM in 2014. Who's with me? (Kevin - I know you will be there is spirit. I'll have your name on my hand ala Bobby Have a great day! DQ |

It blows to be injured but when you look at it big picture --> a few days on the DL are really meaningless in a lifetime of fitness! Enjoy the areobars! |

Alex - Rain may have helped - but the 5 months of cardio work that you did in the pool and on the bike is the big reason why you are running at a 10:22 pace. Losing the weight also helps. Keep it up and revel in the accomplishment! |
