OK, after discussion with the wife, and thinking about this, and assuming I can get a spot, I'm going to do Ironman Lake Placid in 2015.

Gives me 17 months to get ready. Steve -- whats your suggestion on first steps, and in what direction for a long term plan for this?

Can't believe I'm really thinking about this. :^O

Kumar - Congrats on the Marathon! Swimming is a nice way to recover.

Jennifer - Murky water . The water is one of my concerns as I look at different races. So far I have good experiences though.

Mike - Rest up and feel better!

Carol - Balance is tough to find sometimes. The roar of the crowd urging you on while your body is screamming slow down. Swimming is off my schedule right now and think it will fit in much bvetter as good bike and run base if built and I need to add hours to the schedule. Hope you can quite thinks down and find your peace.

Samantha - Your approach to training is interesting to hear about. Putting long bike and run on back to back days is interesting and shows some grit. As you say though come race day you cannot avoid it.

Training at 5:30AM is not so bad althoug the snow has really cut into the gym time. I like to think the shoveling makes up for the lost gym time. Legs were a bit worn yesterday so I did some weights to work shoulders and back. Then had a little time to get the HR up on the treadmill and ran a mile in just over 9 minutes. Today was back on the bike machine for 45 minutes at low RPM <85 most of the way. Really felt good as I continue to up the watts on the machine with 30 minutes at over 185 watts, 15 of those over 200 watts

Mike, that's fantastic news. Now, hopefully, you can get a spot in LP. I may shoot for IMMT; had a friend do it and he had a good experience....plus, the allure of doing it in a foreign country is strong. I can ramble on and on about my thoughts....and if I post them like I am now I'll sound incredibly indecisive!

Carol, I hope your foot gets better. I can feel your pain and hear your frustration with that foot of yours. Figure out what works best for you and stay with it until that foot comes around. Shred videos, biking, run/walking...whatever keeps your fitness levels up and eliminates pain is a successful plan right now!

Kumar, good to hear you getting back to it. Swimming is a nice break for those legs you just beat on last week.

Joe, just keep trying your best to get in training. The NE weather (and most of the country) has been brutal. I was telling my wife today that I don't mind running in the cold but this is beyond cold.....this is miserable. Its going to be March on Saturday and there's no sign of slowdown of the arctic blasts.

I've gotten to the gym 2 out of the last 3 days. This week is Kiley's heavy lifting week so I've been helping her workout. On Tuesday, she did shoulders and I helped her do some different excessary work....results were she couldn't lift her arms above her head Today, she set a new deadlift record by almost 80 LBS more than she estimated. I'm a proud hubby....she used great form and dug deep on those lifts. I got in 20 minutes of cardio after lifting; 1 day elliptical then I sucked it up and ran on the TM today. I begrudgingly reduced my speed and the results were similar....I overheat and dread every second of the run.

Things are starting to fall into place. Tomorrow is my last day on evenings and then I start days again on Sunday. My body will hate me again for changing my work schedule but I'm hoping 3 years of days will help me bounce back faster. I've also had an interesting thought on race options. If tri races are too expensive, do you think I could get some positives out of doing a 100 mile bike race, a road race, and a swim only race of some sort? It wouldn't be a triathlon but it would potentially be the longest bike/swim I've ever done competitively.

Jay, HITTS races are very affordable if there are any near you.

Hrm that far out for an IM. What are your plans for this season. I would probably try to get faster and do a coupe HIMs this year then focus on speed in the offseason and then do a 6 month build for your IM.

Another affordable tri series is Setupevents if you're on the east coast. They have events from Maryland to Georgia, and some sprints start at $45.

Mike, congrats on your commitment to IMLP 2015! Ha, all those hits on the register button were but a mere warm up for that ! Family support is important on that, so it's great that your wife is on board. 1st step down, now ALL you have to do is train.

Joe, I would think that snow shoveling would be a very good workout. Hope you guys thaw out soon!

Jay, those shift changes sound rough. Glad you are approaching normal people work hours again!

So I had been dreading my last call of the day -- providing training remotely on a system I'm not too familiar with to a client I have not met. Turns out the gal I was training is 45 and wants to do her first triathlon. So I pointed her to some good local races for beginners, and we had a great conversation after finishing up the training. Her office is on one of my fav bike routes. Told her I'd be glad to waive our "trip charge" and come to her office next time if I could come on my bike and we go for a ride. LOL, she was all for it. Nice way to lead into the weekend .

LP sells out pretty quick if I remember right. Not sure if it makes it to online.

Anyway, February is in the bank lets see your numbers don't be shy for good or ill doesn't matter no judgement here, yesterday is gone, tomorrow may never come all you have is today, so live it.

Swim: 10h 18m 15s - 23900 Yd
Bike: 21h 13m 53s - 428.62 Mi
Run: 16h 38m 54s - 113.09 Mi
Strength: 3h 35m
Weight loss: an additional 7 pounds. (Down 2 belt loops since Jan 1)

Pretty happy with the month made every planned workout, no chocolate, no soda, no sugar serial. Selling my stock in Herseys.

Wow Steve!!! Way to go - If we encourage this behavior, Hershey's will go out of business soon :-)

My info for February

Swim: 2h
Bike: 0 (will start from today)
Run 13h 30m - 45 miles (intend to reduce run and increase swim and bike in March)
Strength 0
Weight gain ~5 lbs (not good at all - mainly due to stress eating due to office pressures. Targeting to reduce 2 to 3 lbs in March)

Great job, Steve. Big improvements for you on the "calories in" side!

Kumar, I bet you are looking forward to mixing it up a bit after that Marathon. Great new profile pic! Hope you can get outside today....another cold wave coming for us in N. Texas tomorrow!

Mike, ha, yes, but I have confidence in your ability to hit the "register" button .

February's totals:

Swim: 3h 19m 35s - 9500 Yd

Bike: 2h 54m 10s - 36.4 Mi

Run: 10h 17m 37s - 39.03 Mi

30 Day Shred - Level 1: 3h 18m

My definition of "run" is pretty loose these days, but I'll take it because it's > 0. Very happy that I've been consistent since starting the shred videos. 1st time I've had any consistency with strength training in a long time. For March, more biking, continue the shred (will move on to level 2 soon), and continue to see if I can slowly rebuild my run.

Good point by Steve. Perhaps, you should consider volunteering for IMLP like Pam did for IMFL so you can get dibs on it....guarantee your spot if you will.

Steve, I hear you on the HITS series. The closest one to me would be in NY which is roughly 8 hours away. (I believe Hunter Mountain is in Catskills...not too far away from Lake Placid....i think....geography isn't my strong suit without Google lol) This may all become a moot point because that Mass DOC has 6 Boston numbers they are offering to employees via raffle. I would do Boston in a heartbeat and forego any triathlons this year if I got a number. I know everyone was impacted by last years terror attack on the event but I feel like its a little different for us here in Mass because we grew up with the marathon; Red Sox and the marathon on Patriots Day...its a tradition. It would be an honor to run for all the city and victims and give a big FU to the terrorists who want us to live our lives in fear. I told Kiley that I'm going to be putting in for a number and she said she would be scared for me; that's EXACTLY why I'd do it.

Carol - I'd say given your foot issues that your run total is pretty impressive. Keep it up.

Mike D - You definitely have no trouble hitting the register button.

Jay - Just when you thought the snow was over. Not sure what they are talking about up north but around here could be another 12". More quality time at the gym assuming I can get there. Otherwise back to the shovel, shovel, shovel, repeat routine. Lol.

Kumar - You have a great attitude. Keep at it. Completing that Marry shows you can accomplish alot.

Feeling put off a bit today as I wound up cutting short the WO today. Started on the treadmill pretty easy got through 3 miles and started feeling tight. Tried a couple things slowed down but did not help. I will take the high road today and because it is early and it is one day and it has been a busy month and more snow is coming and SO I Give A Big Siighghgh...... oh well. Sorry had to get out the mental gudge and I do feel better now. Numbers:

Swim 0 (to plan as I only sneak in now and then) Bike 10.5 hours on the gym equipment and run 4:00:58 for 22.18 miles. Plus a bunch of shovelling. The bike focus has really built up strength in my legs but there is a need to get back to more running and endurance building. Less watts on the bike and more time on the treadmill.

Jay, it would be good to meet you at the Boston Marathon if you win the lottery. I agree that we should not let this special event go down with fear.

Here are my February numbers:

Run: 37h 23m 35s - 257.25 Mi

Hello Everyone

A little bit not ok this week. Plans did not go as expected. I wont be able to do my hilly bike ride this Sunday with friends for my Long Ride, cant find someone to cover me tonight , so i just did my 3 Hr. Ride today in a 6 mi loop around and around to death.Working tonight hopefully i can get a swim tom am, which i can only do it on cold waters of the lake 60F or colder ( city pool opens noon) long run in the afternoon after i wake up.

@Steve

12/Hrs. per week woot woot!!!!

@Linda

By any chance you did not interchange your bike and run data?? joke joke Your Awesome. IF i am to see you running you must be flawlessly flying.
so thats how it is to be BQ'er
Linda 64.3 mpw
Steve 28.25 mpw w/ crosstraining.
Goodluck to you at Boston.

@MikeD

Good your already planning ahead for IMLP we are pretty much on the same boat im planning for IMTX 15 mos from now. if you have a 12 mo training plan let me know.Sorry about your weather.

@Carol
Glad your recovering well, hopefully you could have recover sooner, we had good days last 2 weeks.

@Jay
Hopefully you luckily get drawn for the BQ slot. Looking into Full IM. I was also looking into a non WTC full, the again after experiencing a mary i realized how much work i need to put into training for a full. IF i am to finish one i might as well do an IM branded chances are great i might not do another one whatever happens.Good your in days now more flexibility in training.

@Kumar
you look great on your pic

@Samantha
By any chance have you used your PTO just to get rest from a training week? or its not a good sign when i start using my PTOs because i am just tired from work since i am tired from training.

@Mike
Get well soon, sorry for the bad infection.

Good luck to all of you in training ,Spring is coming.

Cheers

Carl

Linda very impressive run miles... stay healthy to get to race start. Also please note that they have made some changes about what you can do not do with clothing at the beginning of the race. You still get a change of clothes at the end, but you might not be able to use the bag to put your warm clothes in the morning into to claim later. I am not 100% on that, but do check it out as time gets closer.

So today turned out to be race day for the family. We woke up at 4:30 am, drove 150 miles in the rain, little kids raced in the rain (Daniel 1 mile 7:23, (3rd grade-4th place) and Joshua 5th grade (7:55 1 mile), then my 16 year old ran the 3 mile with my wife and I. I finished in 18:46 (6:16 mpm) and got first in age group 10th overall, Mike got 5th in age group (49:48) and my wife got 6th in her age group with a PR over last year. I then finished up my workout (8 more miles) while the family went shopping, drove home 150 miles in the rain, went to church, then got in 3 ish hours at work. My typical LT for running is 175 and my HR per mile splits was 175, 174, 177, so that is all the speed I was going to get with my current training. Can't really cook past LT in a race for too long. Hrm 9pm time for dinner. Tomorrow will be a longer workout day, but less driving (71 mile bike 4 mile run 1 mile swim). Cuz I don't want to swim tonight.

Steve - Not sure why but the times on your 1/2 mile intervals caught my eye the other day. Are those the pace #'s? Think I've noticed that before and never thought to ask but given your speed the split times must be faster than that for 1/2 mile. Getting below the 9 min pace used to impress me but today on the treadmill, I actually hit 7:30 pace for a 1/4mileish....
On another point, on this mornings bike I noticed the HR was a bit higher that I would expect for the watts. Fluctuation is normal but would this be an indicator of some fatigue? The RPE would say fatigue, so I kept it lighter, worked through it and finished 30mins. Then I actually had a nice run on the treadmill.

Linda - Those run numbers are impressive.

Jay - Good luck on the lottery!

Carl, Jared - you guys have nice bike numbers. I am hoping to get there this year and just have to remember not to completely toast my legs trying to get there.

Here's my sad February totals. March will be much better

Swim: 2h 18m 19s - 8260 Yd
Bike: 8h 49m 55s - 147.6 Mi
Run: 3h 14m 35s - 18.16 Mi

Linda -- wow is all I can say to your run figures!! thats awesome!

Steve -- love the whole family participating in the race. Congrats to all of you for getting out there and running. Was the race in the rain, too?

Was in the 'fast' lane for masters swim today. Held on as long as I could (about 1/3 of the workout) before moving over to the slightly less fast lane. . The fast lane is doing 1:10/100 pace on stuff, and I'm the slow guy by quite a bit, but I could tell the turnover thing is getting better. Would love to get my pace down to 1:20/100, but I don't swim enough for that. I need to get fit first, then work on speed (in all areas!).

Spent the weekend cutting my honey do list down and back to a managable point. Started working out again this morning, 30 min on the trainer and felt pretty good, so I'll build back to plan by next week I hope. Here are my February totals:

Swim: 5h 17m - 15500 Yd

Bike: 9h 56m 38s - 187.75 Mi

Run: 9h 10m 24s - 61.98 Mi

Not bad for missing an entire week.

Feb Totals:

Swim 30,000 yards
Bike 352 miles
Run 93 miles

All and all, I'm pretty happy with my training this month. My swim is much better than it has been in the past. The bike using power has improved...now to get the running to cooperate!

Kumar - love the new avatar...looking good!

Samantha - loved the quote, "...all day long you are being told you are amazing and then they hand you fresh cold water, fruit, etc."

Isabella - I like to watch action movies with good soundtracks like "The Italian Job", "Ronin", "Ocean's Eleven" and TV shows that are action-based. I can't do long talky shows or movies or the ride seems even longer than it actually is.

Mike D - definitely see you at Patriot. Good luck with IMLP...I've got a couple of friends doing it this year. I've been thinking about IMMT - but figure I'be got to do at least one more HIM before I can pull the trigger on that.

Jay - I usually swim in pretty clear lakes, so the Pumpkinman pond kind of freaked me out. I hope the Boston thing works out because (see Linda's->)

Linda - my daughters and I watch the marathon every year. We set up right around mile 25. We'll shake those cowbells extra loud for you when you come by! We will be in town Saturday - Tuesday and if you've got time we'd love to meet up for dinner in the North End (the Italian part of town). Mike and Jay - you are more than welcome to join us if you've got the time as well.

Carl - 6 mile loop for a long bike ride? I've done something similar (100 miles of nowhere) and that takes some serious gumption. Good on you!

It was raining during the kids 1 mile, but stopped by the time the 3 mile started. Yes I give my 1/2 mile repeats at the pace /mile so folks don't have to do the math and because garmin gives pace numbers easier than actual time to complete. I am actually doing 4 minute repeats so it is more like 900 yard repeats than 800s. The 3 mile was about 1:20 overall faster than the Turkey Trot I did, so getting there. I really need to be running more weekly miles in order to sustain a 6:00 mpm pace over 3 miles though. But that is why I am at like week 3 in my IM plan not week 17.

Fatigue hits people differently for HR. My HR is sluggish when I am carrying a lot of fatigue, so it just doesn't come up and often neither does my run speed. When I am smoked a 9:00 mpm pace feels like 7:30 mpm pace.

Have definitely been out of touch for a while now. Schedule has been hectic and busy. I can’t reply to everything I missed but I did read over the posts and wanted to say a few things.

Happy very belated Birthday Jared and Samantha! Steve, your BD is soon too? Mine and my son’s is the week. Looks like we have a lot of Pisces here.

Kumar, WTG on your Cowtown!! Love the new avatar.

Mike D, yay, go for IMLP!

Jay, love the way you help your wife with the weight training. K has to help me too. Yesterday we ran to the gym, worked out, and then ran back. Hope you get the Lottery slot for Boston.

Whoa, those are some great, great numbers for Feb! Linda you amaze me. You don’t post much but are very quietly working away at your training. Steve, I’m always impressed by your numbers.

Steve, so cool about the whole family racing. You have such a fast family.

WooHoo to Steve and Mike on the weight loss! Did I miss others? So sorry if I did.

Yesterday, I mentioned to son about the unique race we have next weekend. Tally is hosting the Red Hills Horse Trials (Whoa, just googled and found out it’s a really big deal) and we are going to have a race on Sunday on the same course with the obstacles. 2.2 miles and 24 obstacles. I was thinking of doing it and then son expressed interest. He wants RAIN and I want beautiful weather so one of us will be disappointed. We really think we will do it tho.

My Feb totals aren’t great but they are what they are. I really, really, really need to get on the bike but it’s hard for me to find time with all of the baseball games.

Hey all, great to see the progress being made!

Been down with some weird stomach thing since Saturday afternoon. Nausea, pain in upper abdomen and back, unable to sleep. Went to the doc yesterday and had blood work and ultrasound. Quick review, nothing too remarkable and will hear back after full review today. Maybe just a stomach virus that showed up in a different way. Went 30 or so hours without eating a thing, but that's not the weight loss plan I'd recommend! Ate a bit last night without being in pain afterwards, so hopefully getting back to normal.

MTA: Pam, I have to ask, will you be running those trails before or after the horses. If after, that's a whole different kind of agility race ;p?

With the coming of the New Year, athletes commonly think about making nutrition resolutions. Good thing, given only 3 to 4% of Americans follow all of the established Dietary Guidelines.

To help implement your resolutions (or those of your friends and family members), I recommend the following books, most of which are written by nutrition experts: registered dietitians (RD).
