Hello everyone,

Wow I have missed alot here....(still reading most of it!)

I'm hoping to get back to the action here! I havent been training AT ALL between work and home its been trying to squeeze 28 hours into 24 hour days....

anyway, I'm lookig to join the local SF triclub here and eyeing a "for fun" sprint here locally next month and then a "for real" sprint in sept.

WOW, that last RR was awesome!

I hope all is well!

What do you mean by making a concentrate?

Lyoshka - 2011-07-26 3:14 PM @Pete, welcome back!!!!! so glad to see you here again come by when you can! We ain't going anywhere (much like on Sunday..ok, bad joke). @Mark, that is for sure! I will make sure of that!!! @Phil... I'm no Ironman, but can I weigh in anyhow? I'm a devout infinit user and did 3 Marathons and a looong HIM (lol) with Infinit. I'm a fairly slow runner, so a marathon is 5:25, and i only do Infinit in one bottle. I generally will end up taking a couple of gels in later miles, but really, I suspect it's more mental than anything. Infinit ALWAYS carries me through my training runs (which go up to 26 miles). For my first Marathon, I emailed back and forth with Mark (i think that's his name?) the owner of Infinit. He suggested making a concentrate and then drinking water at aid stations with my concentrated Infinit. That's what I do now and it works quite well. I don't mess with the formulae and just use what comes in a standard bag, and don't think the concentrated taste is bad at all, but you could dial down the taste slider if you prefer. Also, another tidbit I'll share... Right before Racine, I was ordering more Infinit, and through a random comment in my conversation with the girl from Infinit we figured out I have been running with a BIKING formula which has protein. They sell it under running (Endurance formula), but shouldn't, as apparently, only 1% of ppl can handle protein on the run? Never knew this, never had upset stomach or anything.. she told me I'm a FREAK of nature lol So I did the entire Racine 70.3 on the Endurance formula (well, bike and run). Worked good for me.

She means to mix the Infinit at 2-3 or 4 times the normal strength in the bottle she carries and then cut the strength to the correct ratio at each aid station using the water on hand. I used bottles with marks on the side so I knew how much water to ad each stop.

Here is the kicker and it is really important!  I did this at IMKY last year using Infinit,  but the course ran out of water on the bike leg at a couple of aid stations.  No water, no concentration cutting.  This is REALLY bad!  Trust me.  Whatever you do, make sure you have a backup plan, because something will go wrong somewhere along your race.

Mark, essentially what Billy said.. I just mixed what I would need for the entire run in one bottle.. so if you project a marathon to be 5 hours, mix 10 scoops into the bottle (it will look as if you can't fit that much powder in there, but it will settle and dissolve quickly once water is added; do it the night before). I didn't really "mix" it into aid station cups, I just squarted it in my mouth as I saw an aid station approaching, and would drink water at the station. You just want to make sure you are getting enough water in to get all that Infinit fuel to your muscles.

Now, about a plan B. Yes, 100% agree. When I heard that my Racine Half-Ironman was happening in 100 degree heat and that IMKY ran out of water (Ironman???? ran out of water/????), I knew I wasn't taking any chances (being a slower runner especially), so I ran with a belt with 2 22 oz bottles. One had 2.5 hrs worth of Infinit mixed in (so I mixed 5 scoops) and one had plain water. My plan was simple. If they ran out of water, I at least had 44 oz of liquids and all my Infinit. If they didn't (which they didn't, thank God), I would drink Infinit as planned and refill my plain water bottle each chance I got. Does that make sense?

Bryan awsome news the book and the job!!!

WHo is doing IM Louisville?

THose that have done IMLOU any advise or knowlege about the course you can give would be appreciated.

Yes Bryan!!!  Great news about the book and the job!!  Woo Hoo!!  Of course I will to get the book and read it!! Smile

I am doing IMLOU and I did it last year.  Just make sure you have a plan and stick with it.  Race your own race...don't get caught up in anyone else's race. You want to be able to finish so race your race.  The bike is constant rollers so it is very important to eat and drink...don't wait for a good time just stick with your plan and fuel your body.  My brother did it with me last year as well.  Also a good friend who had completed 23 IM and did not finish last year.  He collapsed on the run.  Also my cousin from TX didn't finish...he didn't take enough in during the bike...but is coming back for revenge this year!  He did complete IMTX this May.  If you have any specific questions let me know and maybe I can answer for you!

Lena, I have had a while to digest your report and plight.  I have a different opinion then most.....ok, everyone else.  After reading your report and believing that the sole reason you didn't finish in the alotted time is the fact that the road course was so bad.  I happen to believe that that was the problem,  again, no fault of your own.  Now, my question is, why would you ever go back and race at a venue that was so poorly maintained?  Screw'em, find a better HIM and kick its butt.  Don't let another race and another 6 months of training go out the window because they won't fix their roads!  My opinion, sorry.  I think you are worth more than that.

***Sorry been MIA for a couple of days, dealing with some Mom-Brother family drama from 6000 miles away ***

LRR, thanks I'm definitely no rock star, but I'll take compliments any time I can get them

Mark, I have no idea? I will take a look at the bike tonight. My bike is nothing special, a starter road bike - Jamis Satellite. I'll post the brand later...

Billy, I guess I am just figuring that hey, 1740 people still finished, so I should be able to? Although, the Moped Lady did say that by the time she got to us, she had changed about 20 flats, which was a shockingly high number in a dry race (to which I said, "Have you seen the roads here????"), and of course, the guy next to me had the entire wheel warped when the spoke broke..
Plus, Racine is only 75 miles away, so it'd be a shame not to do it?

Lena - Regarding the question of tires.  Not all tires are created equal.  Some are better at riding in the rain others are made to go fast, other grip the road like a frightened cat.  When you return to Racine, you might be interested in a tire designed to be highly durable and almost puncture proof.   These are not going to be the fastest or the lightest tires on the road.  But under special circumstances a puncture proof tire might just save the day.

Hi All,

Hope yoou are all out enjoying your summer!!!

Lena I agree with Mark...there are many different tires, possibly more durable than what you were riding. You will always be a rock star in my book for finishing the race!!! I would feel the same and want to go back and do the race again!!!

I have invited a new member to our group. His name is Joel and he is doing his first tri in 2 weeks. I told  him you guys would be helpful. Joel is a long time family friend ( he knew me when I was a smoking couch potato!) and I am excited to see him enter the sport. Welcome Joel

Mark, I see. I may consider that to finish-proof this baby next time.. now, do they slow you down significantly? I'm already not fast (but working on it)...

Marianne, thank you again you are too sweet!!!

Billy, dearest, you know I love you No matter what I say, you are my IronDude with loaded guns on a bad bike
-----------

Well, it appears I'm hurt. Was doing gardening today (shoveling wheel barrows of dirt to finish my project from hell), stepped outside of the flower bed and stepped down wrong, rolled my ankle and went down. Got my awesome neighbor Dee to watch the kids and Damon took me to Immediate Care to do an xray just to make sure nothing was broken. Bad sprain, thank God no fractures. I'm pretty swollen up, though. Came home with a hard splint and crutches (which I already HATE!!!). Crap. Chicago is 9 weeks away, and I was also going to do Fox Valley marathon as a training run (29 miler that day), which would be 6 weeks away. Probably no go for FV now, and just finish Chicago, no time goal

Good Luck in Chicago.  You have plenty of time to heal and recover.

Marianne, thanks! I'll rest it as much I can with 2 kids at home Luckily, Damon took today off to help out with the boys.. he also has all next week off as we were going to go camping Sun-Wed. Not sure we can now? We do tent camping, so most definitely all day on my feet
_____________

So.. i'm trying to brainstorm here.. what CAN I do with this bum ankle? Obviously, running and biking are out for several weeks. So is yoga, pilates, anything weight bearing. I know I can do Ab Ripper X, it's only 15 min, so I may try to get it in once a day. Can I swim? I know swimming shouldn't affect the ankle, but water resistance? What do you think?

What else can I do for now? Trying to turn this lemon into some lemonade

Bryan, yeah yeah yeah.. I know. but but but ... ah well. We are going camping (not sure how it'll work out with the bum ankle), so no workouts till Thur anyhow.. then i will hopefully be ok enough to swim. 28 hours later, the ankle is still as big as a baseball (same as last night). Trying to rest it as much as I can, hubby is being great, took a day off and did a bunch of stuff with the kids...

funny story from today. Damon took the kids for a bike ride to give me time to just sit and put my feet up. Kids are in the trailer, they get to a park 5 miles from the house and the tube on one of the trailer wheels POPS! .. just like my bike tire. So I end up driving to get them (after DH's insistence I can't drive for now)... something in the air?
