Joel reporting for duty.

Thanks everyone! Just swam with Marianne (Mrs. V to me). She also explained where to find “left, right, repeat” so I could join, no joke…I’m just that bad.

First sprint tri on Sunday and crazy excited! I keep reading for advice but this is my first post. Yes I’ve be lurking, but who hasn’t. Any advice for the newbie I’m all ears. Thanks again

Good Luck Joel - Tips for your first tri.
Don't try anything new on race day.  Lay out all of your gear two nights before the race.  Don't forget to pump up your tires before the race.   Body glide is your friend.  The hardest part is getting to the start line.  Go have fun and smile at the finish line.

Joel, don't forget, if you are really all ears, you should tuck them in under your swim cap for the tri because they will really create a lot of drag!

Hey Team LRR,

I sorry but I've been slack on my participation here.  Lots going on .  I became a personal trainer certified through CanFitPro and was immediately hired by the YMCA as a trainer.  Been busy with the learning curve.  I've also raced in two races the past few weeks.  I placed third in AG in this race:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=264631

I also place 1st in AG in my last race.  Sorry no report yet.

At my last race I was speaking to another participant and he congratulated me on taking over the points lead with my AG win.  I must of looked really confused because he had to explain to me that this series had a season long points system the the winner would receive some sort of prize and recognition at the year end banquet.  He asked me how many more races I had entered because it is a cumulative total of all your races.  I told him that this was my last Try-a-tri and that I was stepping up to a sprint for my last race.  Shaking his head he said thats too bad because with only 4 races left I could win if I raced a couple of more.

So dilemma....being a slightly competitive AAA personality type I now have a choice.  Stay with my original plan and goals and move up category to Sprint for the end of the season. Or stay at same category, add another race, and try to win season points race.  The original goal of competing in all Sprint triathlons then moving up to Olympic for next season remains the same.

I've already made a decision but I'd love to hear your opinions on the subject.

And finally I've been coerced into competing (more like completing) the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon 2011 (1/2 marathon) on October 16th this year.  From coach to 1/2 marathon in 10 months...should write a book or something...j/k.

Anyway thanks for listening to my lengthy rambling, TTYL

Glenn - depending on timing and distances, can you do both - another try a Tri and the sprint.

Joel, have tons of fun tomorrow!!! I'm always nervous before the start, especially those last 3-4 min before the swim, but once the gun goes off, I'm fine.. just try to relax, trust your training and just go out there and have fun. The race is half mental...

Hey all!

Just swinging by, did my first Oly today.  Blazingly hot with water in the mid to upper 80's.  Overall my time sucked but did take 3rd in my AG on the swim and with the heat I knew it my time would be horrible.  Technically my first Oly so its a PB that should be easy to beat next year (they are moving the race back to October so it should be a bit cooler).

Hey Everyone,

Well I had my first finish, and had an amazing time!

Needed to tell everyone that first before telling you that I got a flat tire at mile 8 of 14 mile ride…I only had one small Mt. bike tire iron and couldn’t get the tire off my road rims, so it took me a little more than 10 min to fix my flat. Oh well lesson learned.

-The swim went great. Started right in front and finished the .25 miles swim in 5:35 and 63 overall

-Bike…well 14 miles in 56:47

-Run  5K in 28 min

-My transitions were about 2:30 each and I’m not sure if that’s slow or REALLY slow.

-Total time – 1:35:28

Overall I had such an amazing time, and I can’t wait for the next one in about a month. Thanks everyone!

Joel

HA, Billy, of course I did…why you think it was the one leg of the race that I did ok on!

Speaking of expensive though, currently I use a sleeveless wetsuit (orca S3) for all my swimming. I eventually want to purchase a long sleeve suit. I want to swim later into Fall. I looked on Trisports and they have a Zoot Zenith 2.0 on sale for $390, and I have a 20% off coupon.

My question is do I take advantage of this deal, or wait a little longer for the different end of season sales?

I wanted to tell you all about my 100mile bike ride.
Sunday, I rode in the North Bend Rotary Tour de Peaks Century.
Finished the ride in 5:34 minutes.  That’s an average of 17.9mph for over 5 hours.
Sometimes faster, sometimes slower, riding the first 75miles with my face in the wind (non-drafting).

Around mile 76, 3 riders from my triathlon team caught me.
This was perfect timing as my hams and quads were really suffering.

I finished the century tri'n to stay up with three iron woman.
So much fun and so much inspiration.

All of my training this year has been focused on the HIM.  Long Ride Bike training in the 56-75mi range and 13 mile long runs.  Could I have run the mary after last weekends 5:34 century. not.  But I do have a year to build a bigger base.

Anyone racing this weekend. Good luck!

Hi All

I am on Vacation in the mountains of Vermont. Beautiful lake at the base of the mountain. Gorgeous roads to cycle.  Still no running for me

Mark you could certainly run after cycling 112...it just wouldnt be at your usual zippy pace!!! You have a full year to work on it.

Congrats Joel...you are a triathlete!!!!!Sux that you flatted but it will be easy to beat your time in the next race, Did you get the wetsuit?

Amy and Billy are you doing Louisville????
