Glad you're feeling better What's on your plan - recovery wise - for the next couple months or so? What is this recovery you speak of????? Seriously though I'm going back in the weight room for a month or two, especially if I can't find an indoor pool to work at. Other than that I have a good 10-20 folks I know doing IMTX that are going to need training buddies. Helping to push them to PR in May would be very satisfying to me. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() karen26.2 - 2011-10-26 7:04 AM I suck at butterfly - so I don't do it. I just can't get the timing down, and end up making a fool of myself. I wish I knew how to do it, because it looks kind of fun. I'm not real good at breast or back either. Up early for spin class today. A week and a half out from Savannah marathon, really looking forward to this race. I'm going with a friend, and Saturday night (race is that morning) we are doing the haunted pub crawl. I can't wait. And we won't have to stumble too far back to the hotel, we're right down in the middle of it all. When I swam, I swam the 100 and 200 fly and the 200 IM. Fly is my thing. I joke that I'm going to do fly for sprint and see what people think. Part of my problem with my swimming is that I still have fly elements in my freestyle. Once you get it, it clicks. Also I love Savannah. As a random aside, when I lived in the ATL, there was a woman at the gym named Georgia and her daughters were Savannah and Augusta. It was a little weird for my taste. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I suck at the fly and cannot get the timing of the kicks yet. Last night we spent a lot of time on the fly. Needless to say the lifeguard was laughing!!! It was pretty funny. Before last week I hadn't been in the pool since June! I am completely amazed how much swim fitness I have lost. 100 tires me out, and the 25's speed work almost killed me .... And I know this sounds totally ridiculous to you all ... |

![]() | ![]() jarvy01 - 2011-10-26 9:19 AM Rudy has some good thoughts on this that have helped me. If youuse speed and cadence at a particularly gear on the trainer it's a pretty good supplement for power, so 20 mph at 90 rpm in your lg/18.... I'll let Rudy chime in So I did a bunch of squats and lunges while holding weights yesterday. I must have used many of my weaker muscles or something, because I can barely walk today. Did some yoga this morning and felt better, but now I'm walking around like I'm 90 again. Go away, pain! I look silly. quick question.....I can't afford a power meter this year (nor do I think I need it yet, as it's only my second season, and a lot can be gained just from volume and riding with groups). Is it useful to use cadence as a measure of performance? I mean, will intervals done at higher cadences work the same way as using power would? I tend to naturally have a lower cadence, but if I push it harder for periods of time, then I think that would do the job; right? |

Now if only I wasn't the only one in my family without green mucus flowing out of their nose I'd be set. Nice workout. I've been taking it pretty easy for a while. Next week I start to pick it up again. Joining the gym just for three months so I when I need to do two workouts a day, I can get up early and hit the trainer early, and run during the day at the gym and work on strength and core. Plus I'll be able to h it up a few spin classes. Scott, how is Cindy doing with her running? Was she training for a 5k or HM? Can't remember. Edited by rizer22 2011-10-27 7:58 AM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Her running has become sporatic at best. I push where I can but I found that our marriage is better when I'm support and there to answer questions when she has them and not her trainer per say. She runs 2-3 times a week and doesn't understand why she isn't making large jumps in her fitness. I try to explain, but she really needs to find it inside of her to drive the process and find the knowledge because my delivery is a bit rough at times. I think she is looking at a relay for the HM at this point with a bunch of girls who find themselves in the same boat. We have a 5k on Thanksgiving morning so I hope it goes well. :fingerscrossed: |

5K should go well. Running 2-3 times a week works for a 5K. Its a little harder with a HM (and no base). Hopefully the 5K will get her excited. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Scott, I think 2-3 times a week is pretty good for her. Like Kelly said, maybe the 5k will give her a little spark. Not worth arguing over, that's for sure. And just think, if you push her too much, she might love it, and that would ruin your budget for Tri's. Just sayin'.......... |

Tell her she looks great and she running faster than you normally run. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I got some good news, and not so good news with the MRI on the right shoulder I had last night. The good news, seems to be no rotator cuff tear. Bad news, there is a good tear in the Labrum, which if I understand correctly, kind of holds the shoulder together. I will be scheduling an appt with Dr Joyce in Glastonbury. He's the Uconn Athletics Orthopidic Surgeon, and he has also done my left rotator a few years ago, and Right ACL about 8-9 years ago. Apparently, most orthos may reccomend surgery, some may not. I am pretty frustrated right now, because this was not my fault. Damn Meth addict that we as tax payers pay to treat in state programs, is allowed to drive after receiving her dosage.I have come a long way in the past 12 months in regards to fitness, and I do not want to take a step back. As of this moment, I will decline to have surgery if that is what the Ortho reccomends. I will find a way to just strengthen it! Bottom line is, I am still very fortunate I was not hurt even more, and no one else was either. And there are people out there far worse than me, (More on this in a moment) so I'll limit my crying!! So plan going forward: Sign up for REV 3 Quassy HIM, June 3rd. I'll have more detail later, and once I fully commit to this. I like charity, love to volunteer, and help anyway I can. I have been looking for that individual since late summer, and I have found the person I want to do this HIM for. Yes, doing it for myself as well, but I need to do it for others too. There is a 3 year old little girl, named Jocelyn, in my home town. I don't know the family. But I have heard the story and have read the blog every time it is updated. She was diagnosed with a form of cancer in the spring, has been having Chemo all summer, and last week had her foot removed above the ankle. So my little shoulder injury is nothing compared to what this little girl has and will have to deal with. I have not reached out to the family yet, but as soon as I get the ok from the Ortho, I will. I need to be able to swim, and right now, it hurts to swim. Don't worry, I will be introducing you all to Jocelyn, with the blessing of her family. And what more motivation do I need than Jocelyn, and a picture of her taped up right next to my trainer. I am so very thankful I have a healthy family. Ok, I am done venting!! |

I have had a torn labrum in my left shoulder since 2008. Doctor recommended surgery, but said I oculd try PT to stregthen the areas around it (surgery requires 6 months of receovery -- I didn't want to deal with that). PT worked. I realize at some point I may need to have it repaired, but for now its good. I don't even notice it anymore. I saw a shoulder specialist -- Augustus Mazzocca (http://www.sportsmd.com/DoctorDetail/id/909/ai/+/sp/+/state/connecticut/n/augustus_mazzocca.aspx). He's also affiliated with UConn and it may be worth a visit. He also sent to me to particular therapist at UConn to deal with the issue. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That is very reassuring Kelly. Good to hear that you are doing fine with it. Dr Joyce is also one of the few shoulder specialist in CT. Do you still have pain from it? |

I'm not sure if it'l always work, but its definately worth a try. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Amazingly dropping back to pre-swim this year ... I haven't had shoulder pain (probably proper stroke technique) and I can do a butterfly without feeling like I am having a heart attack halfway down. That's right you heard me, I was doing butterfly tonight and it felt pretty good. AND I found out I have and awesome backstroke butterfly kick off the wall, so much so I have to shoot to the surface for a breath, LOL |
