Thank you.

I did two sprints like 5 or so years ago but this my first time training for them. This year I did two olympics and now an Ironman. Next year I am going to do the oceanside HIM.

I agree!! Congrats you guys!! so awesome!! you have inspired me to commit to my very first race EVER.

tri for real in Pleasanton on the 18th of sept. 700m swim, 19 mile bike and 4 mile run.

This will be testing my current limits at each discipline. I've been out on my bike a few times doing 12-15 miles, and running 2 miles or so every other day. I need to get back in the pool ASAP! i only have 2 weeks!

nothing like a deadline to get your a$$ in gear.

oh and I'm going to get a roadID and looking for a clever/meaningful/funny saying to go on the bottom....any suggestions?

so this may be a super NOOB question but I'm trying to keep the number one rule of this sport which is "Nothing new on race day". Having said that, I will admit to have never in my life worn a swim cap.

my questions to you experts (or anyone more knowledgeable than me) are:

  • are there different types?
  • different sizes?
  • any tips like "goggles under cap" or visa versa

The swim should be fairly warm as pics from previous years show some folks wearing wet suits and some not. Since I do not currently own one, I will not be wearing one.

swim caps are available at the race for a small fee, but I'd like to start training on one ASAP so I can get used to it if needed. I know it seems like a small piece of the pie, but I believe that I need to pay attention to ALL details no matter how small.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Swim caps.

I started wearing a cap because, I felt faster in the water and it was easier to breath with the cap on.  Without the cap water would stream down the side of my face into my mouth just as I finished exhale and needed to quickly catch my breath.  With the cap on, water flowed off faster and did not interfere with the rythmn of breathing and rotating from side to side.

In most races you will be given one by the Race Director or should have one in your race packet.  The color determines which wave of the swim you belong in.  This may vary.

There are a couple of different types, Silicone and latex.  I prefer to swim in a silicone cap and have a couple of favorites that are thick, durable a do not try to pull my hair out.  The ones you receive on race day are neither thick, durable and do try to pull your hair out.

During practice I usually wear my googles on the outside of the cap.  So I can take them off to defog or see what Coach is demonstrating.  During racing I wear my googles under my race cap.  This helps to keep them in place in the event they get bumped during the start or navigating around the corner buoy's.

Because the latex caps do not slid on easily the way silicone caps do and I like the way my googles stay put between, I have taken to wearing two caps.  First I put on one of my favorite caps.  then I put on my googles, then I pull on the designated race day cap.  Everything is nice and secure.  When I take off the cap during the run from the swim to the transition area, everything comes off at once, cap1, googles and cap2.

Putting on a cap for the first time is easier if you start with you hair dry.  Hold the front of the cap against the center of your forehead and pull towards the back and down.  Hold the cap with the flats of your fingers.  If you try to pinch or hold it with your finger nails the cap will rip and be useless.  Some baby powder may help.     I try to get the cap halfway down my ears, this helps the water drain out and equalizes pressure.

Good Luck in your race.

awesome! thans so much for the info!

I'll be picking one up this weekend!

I'll try both ear positions and see what works.

Also Fit, great info on the water going in your mouth without the cap....that happens to me and would be a great benefit if that is solved with the cap.

Phil - great job---great report. Take a couple weeks off. Then do some fun endurance stuff with your fitness. 12-16 weeks should get you ready.

Debbie and I go to NY in 2 weeks for the book launch. It will be profiled (at least right now) on the TODAY show 9/22. Then the next week we move. This is freaking crazy. Please forgive me for not being here much. For you newer folks, you are all in good hands. Probably better advice than if I was here more. Go on facebook and "like" You Are An Ironman - The Book. You can also go read a bit about those in the book at www.jacquessteinberg.com. Look toward the bottom left of the page. You get a pic of me in a wetsuit if you buy the book. Woohoo!!! That'll make it sell.

Fit - Crosses another finish line - Bonney Lake Oly 2:39:38.  That's two oly's in six days.  The toes were still a bit tender from last weekends fun, but a 20.4mph bike and a PR in the swim helped to bring this Beginner Triathlete across the line with a huge smile.

Race report done.
