Those of you who have hired coaches, how far in advance of race day do you start working with him/her?  Do you work with a coach year round or as part of a 20 week, 32 week, 52 week plan?

I plan on having my coach in place at least for 10 months to help with my base and offseason stuff.

I used the book IronFit. I liked it. It took a while to get use to the timed practice instead of the milage and also training by heart rate. I had 4 periods where I missed training and still finished in 12:02.  I liked that it had three levels of training plans. The only changes for me would be run more if I can handle it just because I am a runner.  He does coaching on line I believe. if you have more question let me know.

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a great IM training plan.  Any recommendations?  Tell me what you liked and what you just had to tweak, and what you would do different next time.

Thanks,

I'm officially on a non-triathlon vacation.  My swim coach says now is the time to relax and take a non-racing vacation.  Just before she says I need to swim 4 times a week if I want to get better.  I just nod my head and say I can do that.  I love the smell of chlorine in the morning.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic Thursday.

I just had a thought I wanted to bounce of LLR.  I have a running coach, I have a swim coach, I have cycling for power coach. I have a tri club.  Do I need another coach to watch over them all? Another coach to watch over me?  Sometime I just want to swim and bike and run because it's fun.  Can I build a base for IM distance and not lose the joy of being in motion, the thrill of the chase?

Cheers.

Mark

I know I am no LLR but I would say yes its possible but it all depends on if you need that coach. I only had a person help me with my swim stroke and a couple of drills and only saw her like 10 times. You need a plan you can trust and lots of self discipline. I say this is all if finishing is your goal. Of course a coach or several coaches can only help if they are good.  Coaches do help because they can sometimes save you from yourself and see things that you may overlook. I know Ryan Hall(Olympic Marathoner) says he has to have one or he over trains. If I were to do it again I would consider a coach.

Phil - I think you covered that very well.  I am a member of Endurance Nation - an online community of triathletes with 2 coaches.  but that's not saying it would be right for everyone.  MAV hired a coach last year to give her exact workouts without her haveing to adjust anything.  I think it depends on your goals and what you are trying to accomplish.

My daughter did the Nike womens Marathon this weekend thru them and she got coaching, entry, etc.

the caviat is I need to fundraise $8900!

They seem to have a pretty good coaching/mentoring program.

In your defense, if you are committed to the cause, 8900 isn't that much with 11 months to go, I did raise 7500 during my Louisville IM

Hey all!
Finished, had a great swim but the bike and run didn't go well. Beat my NOLA time but didn't hit my A goal.  Sunburned and tired.

Billy - Congrats!

Sure! Thanks for asking!  Swim went well.  Was shooting for a 41-42 minutes and came in around 40 something (funny the guy that whined the most about learning to swim actually had his swim be the best of the three legs).  That is almost an 11min improvement from my first HIM so I am happy.  Good swim but crowded and a fair amount of body contact but I just held my own.  Bike was tough, more hills than I expected and some fairly rough roads in spots.  I can't wait to get home and download my Garmin as a couple of the downhills I am pretty sure I was close to 40 mph.  Just tucked and white knuckled it down.  My bike can fly when I am tucked.  Not pedaling I was passing people on the down hill who were cranking (I guess sometimes there is an advantage to not being feather light! ;> But I wasn't prepared for the hills and my bike was slower than expected and burned my legs for the run.  Run was hot, no shade and three loops.  Overall I had fun and enjoyed myself but paying for it today.

Plans are for NOLA 2012 (cheap entry fee I got) then in Oct next year there are two races, one sprint and one oly which are the state championships I believe.  Going to concentrate on getting fast for short courses as next year is my first shot at the 50-54 group.  Now have a wired PowerTap that I hope works and will train with that.  Going to try Carmichaels "Time Crunched Triathlete".  For me to train more than 8-10 hrs a week is too hard with all the things going on in my life so short and fast it is.

Congrats Billy and Gary! very nice.

I've been thinking about the fundraising....and that will take too much of my time. I found a group training for Coeur d'Alene, i might join them OR just train on my own for a bit, then look for a coach and shoot for IMAZ as suggested earlier.

Jeff - you can still fund raise without the pressure of a requirement.  IM foundation has a program for any charity you want to raise for or most charrities will help you figure it out.  And you pick the cause.  This is what I do....

Billy - great job dude...

Gary - I think I told you at the early stages of the year about the hills in Austin and it was hot.  I was trying to get down there Sunday early enough to come out to the race but it was 8 before I was there because I had a meeting there yesterday.  Sorry I missed you.

Last week was my first week I worked out 5 days since my IM. 3 days running and 2 days swim. Boy that HIM 3-30 sure seemed far away until I sat down last night to figure out a workout plan. Goal is to work out 6 days this week.

Hey!  I know you are all too busy working out to post but time to get it in gear!  Too quiet here.... so question for the group, Cialis or Viagra, oops sorry, wrong support group.  Wink (Billy and Lena I will let you know what the answer is, J/K!)

Okay, as for me, well its the winter cycling program, also known as the Coach Jorge program and also trying to jump into a half marathon training plan with lofty goal of just finishing (okay sub 3 hrs would be nice and since I did the Austin run in sub 3 I should be safe).

Been really thinking about my last race and nutrition and have come to the conclusion I suck, nope, sorry I meant my nutrition isn't right.  I am not much of a breakfast person but lunch is a must yet I do these races where I don't eat much until the afternoon.  Infinit on the bike but I think I need more on the run.  I have a run Infinit mix but carrying a bottle on the run just doesn't sound like a sound plan for me.  Maybe like I did for my Oly used a flask with a mixture?  I under mixed that so heavier mix to last longer?  Okay so what do you eat on your bike/run for a HIM?

Gary, how in the world did *I* get mixed in with Billy in Viagra matters? dude....

First of all, ALL, I apologize for MIA so much lately! I will go back and catch up on all the posts and RRs, but for now, just wanted to say i'm here and will try to be better about posting, so Billy doesn't hear crickets anymore..

GARY, question for you... tell me more about Jorge's cycling program, please? i know you posted a few things about this time last year, but i need fresh info I really, really, really need to get much faster on my bike. I know part of my slowness is my bike (i have a Jamis Satellite, which is about a $800-900 road bike), it's a starter bike AND a road bike. I put aero bars on it and had it fitted, but staying in aero position longer than 5-10 min at a time is impossible, and I know a nice tri bike would make me faster, but...... i also know i have A LOOOOOOT of bike fitness to still live up to, and a tri bike isn't going to be a reality for about 3 more years, so I have to make the best with what I have... so i have to start with me Since I know i'll do a HIM every year (barring any extra special things going on), I really want to start dialing into getting faster in all three sports. Bike is the scariest leg to me (cause it's so long, and cause I'm so slow, and cause roads eat my tires), so I need all the help I can get!

  • ..to answer YOUR question... and of course, i have only done one HIM, but I have used Infinit not only for that, but for my 4 marathons, so i feel like i have a bit of experience with it... I always mix a bottle for the entire 5.5 hrs (ugh I'm slow, but working on that, too) and sip it and then drink water at aid stations. Works great for me.

  • for the HIM, for the bike, I did Infinit (I mixed bottles for the cage and had water in the AquaCell) plus one Hammer gel per hour.. the Infinit ppl told me that Infinit is ALL I need ("we have people doing 24 hr mountain bike races on nothing but Infinit"), but I did the gel anyway. Never had a problem in training, but did cramp on the bike in the first 10 miles... so either i was just too nervous, or smth was not right.. I'm curious to see what other people say about your question..
