STEVE, no luckily I am not paying for it I am not quite sure of the setup though, since they told me to bring my own bike... I'm not quite sure what the normal cost of a test is and similarly, I don't really know what general lessons can be learned from it. Some say VO2max can be trained, others say its mostly genetics. And efficiency (especially in running) is regarded to be much more important. Either way, I think I will be informed about the use of the test in their particular setup, as they will probably use percentages of that test result to use in their testing from there on out. So they're probably really looking at the wattage rather than the oxygen uptake. But then I may have it wrong also

I don't think at your age it would be any less interesting at all. I think endurance is one of the few sports where athletes get better by age Of course, at a certain point an athlete will probably be hindered by their age again, but if anything older test subjects might be better because they probably have a more consistent lifestyle (in terms of nutrition, alcohol, etc) as well as more constant results due to their experience.

My leg pain is on the inside of my right leg. About ten inches from my ankle, the "tissue" for lack of better word, that joins the shin bone there, would hurt when I press on it. I tried to be a bit more specific but right now when I press it it doesn't hurt so that's a good thing I guess Probably on monday or tomorrow I will go for a leasurely 4 mile stroll or even less. I am just doubting whether I should run in the same shoes (Saucony Guide 5) that I ran in before. I can't be sure that they are the cause of my injury, only that I didn't sustain an injury in my Mizuno's. Also they wore crazy fast, showing similar wear patterns (mostly on the heel) in about 1/3 of the mileage of the Mizuno. One reason I can think of that I changed is that I've tried to focus on a more forward running position during segments of my runs, say the first 1-2 miles sometimes, where I would try more of a midfoot landing.

JOHANNE: Good luck at IM Arizona and have fun. I am interested to hear about your experiences

Congrats Jeff! I saw on Strava your first km went in 3:55 Reading your RR it probably cost you a little bit, but hey you reached your goal so who cares. Especially since youre still in marathon-mode right?

Thanks! Yes, still in Marathon mode but I don't think this race hurt me really, I just drop a speed workout when I have a 5k that week. Later this afternoon I did our monthly club TT 20k at 33:21 or something, I think I was first overall, at least first of the singles, one tandem couple may have beat me.

A twenty miler tomorrow and then evaluate how I would like to structure next week and if there is a 24 mile run in the works or something less

CONGRATULATIONS!  A PR is a PR even if only by a few seconds.     Nice that you are seeing some of the same people at your races.   I always look forward to who I might meet up with at each race.

My son seems to have a fixation on Texas for some reason.   Hopefully someday I will get to find out why, first hand.

Did I read you have another big race planned?

I read them Johanne and enjoyed as usual.   You are such a cool cucumber.    Really liked the pictures.   You are so lucky to have your family there watching and supporting you.    Best of luck tomorrow.

Anyone else following Johanne's progress yet?

I just punched in her bib# and she finished the swim in 1:42! She went past the 28 mile checkpoint at 3:40 total race time, clocking a very fast 9.3 mile section at around 20mph. Very nice to have so many time points, I almost feel like a stalker :p The marathon even has 1.5 mi time points!

Enter the bib 1102 here and you can find out:

Good luck Johanne.

I'm seeing no more time updates after 65 miles for a while now. I hope its just a technical glitch and Johanne is still trucking along!

edit: Ah phew as I hit refresh there's a mile 93 split!

Five of us from my Masters swimming team participated in The Hour of Power event for Sarcoma research at Carnegie Mellon University today. Each person does an all out 50-yard swim, and then the next person goes, and so on. The first 50 was fine , but it started getting really tough after the first few. We made the mistake of looking up at the clock, and we were only 15 minutes in. We knew it was going to be a long hour. I lost track of how many 50s we each did, but it was maybe 16 or so each. Brutal.

How many people did you do the hour with Dave? Sounds brutal indeed! At least it's for a good cause right?

I did my FTP test on trainerroad today. 20 minutes all out.

http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/106998

I'm not entirely sure the wattage is correct as it's "virtual power" based off of the resistance curve off of my trainer, but at least its a constant. I am a big guy so I'm bound to put out a few more watts than smaller folks who go at similar speeds or faster on the road I'm sure.

I did a four run today-20.7 miles. Slooow but focused on not getting injured and putting in the hours. almost 9 hours of running this week. I have felt good on the weekends, Mon/Tuesday not so much. I'm putting allot of hope that a good taper and simpler logistics of race day will pay off. I'm thinking the grab and go option of aid stations instead of a plastic bag hidden in the weeds will save me some time as well as a marked course vs checking my GPS to know where I am.

I have the option to go 20+ even 24 next weekend in Kansas, not sure of the benefit/wisdom, or if 18-20 would be better?

I'm following Johanne as well - using the IronTrac iPhone app. Her first split says 9:39mm, no data on the second split, and third split reports 17:33mm. I'm hoping that something's wrong with the timing mats/data on that third split. I did hear somewhere that a motorcycle messed-up a timing mat, and that results may be delayed or inaccurate. Or...she could be taking a walk break.

Remember that timing mat at Redman piled up alongside the running trail at the far end? I suspect thay are having problems with them

Ok, now IronTrac has all the splits logged. They are as follows:

1. 9:39/mi

2. 10:51/mi

3. 11:02/mi

4. 11:12/mi

5. 10:33/mi

6. 11:02/mi

Each split is around 1.5 miles, so she's nearing the half way mark on her run. Nice, steady pace. Go Johanne!
