Ok, I will :-).  I tried to do a brick today.  Hour and a half bike ride followed by a 5k run.  The bike ride was fine (tough due to the wind).  T2 was under 2 minutes then I tried to run.  First, my back was tight due to 1+ hours in the aero bars.  I had a little troub;e standing up straight.  Second, my legs felt like they were lackin oxygen.  No cramps but my heart rate was high and my RPE was high.  I cut it short and figure I better practice a bunch more before my first was in 6 weeks.  On the bright side, my bike ride was almost 2x the bike distance for my first couple of races.

On a separate note, I tried to take in a bunch more carbs and protein on the bike to avoid a crash a couple hours after exercising.  On the bike I drank a protein drink and ate a GU.  Right after the ride, I ate a cliff bar.  It seems to have worked.  I'm tired but not as cranky as I usually am after a long (for me) work out.

Keep experimenting with nutrition to see what works for you, even if its soda and twinkies(I used both in a race). Nutrition is highly individualized and can change drasticaly depending on the distance and intensity and what your stomach and taste buds can handle.

Two things will help comming into T2, stretching and spinning. The last 5-10 miles depending on what distance youre racing, try to spin at a high cadence and stand up as much as you need to stretch your back, neck, calfs. These two things will help you keep loose going into the run.

I've been logging my hr data but not training by it.

So what are everyone's thoughts on hr zone for a race?  Try to keep it in a certian zone?  Go by RPE?  Try not to look at it until after the race?

Did another bike/run brick tonight.  Took Stuart's advice and strecthed my back the last few miles and kicked the cadence up to 100 or so.  The bike was only 15 miles (compared to 28 for the last brick).  I felt much better for the run.  I definitely need to do many more of them before my tri.

I remember my first few bike/run bricks SUCKED!  my back hurt, my legs felt dead, I was slow.  I'm no seasoned vet or anything now, but it has sure gotten better.  After about the first 1/2 mile, it pretty much feels like I'm just out on a run.

keep on doing them, it gets better!

for me they are, I never had any issues with the swim/bike.  At least not once I started swimming with ear plugs in.  Before that, I'd have some dizzyness coming out of the water.

Stuart (and everyone!),

I loved being a part of a mentor group, I really learned a lot from your tips and weekly articles, and thank you for the effort!  I liked having virtual tri friends I could watch (I don't really have any real life friends to talk 'tri' with), and keep up with all the training we're all doing.  I enjoyed it so much I've signed up for another mentor group for the spring session, but I assure you I'm going to keep an eye on all of your logs and races!  Keep on keeping on, and good luck this weekend Mike!

This was a great mentor group.  I joined a new one too and I have to say I don't have any pressing questions due to the awesome advice I received here.  My questions from here on out will hopefully just be dealing with issues as they come up.  Thanks again Stuart (and everyone)!

David, my tri friends are virtual for the most part too (except Ryan).  The people I hang around with really don't care much unless they want to make fun of me for wearing spandex :-).

Anyway, I'll keep everyone as friends too and snoop some logs.
