Newtons1st - 2009-02-04 1:08 PM Does anyone know if in the Garmin 305 you can enter lap distance into it? When I do the indoor running I get no GPS signal but I know how far each lap is. I wanted to add it inot the log.

I don't think there is a distance set... you can do auto lap or auto mile marker.  For running indoors or on a treadmill, Garmin makes a foot pod for the 305.  It costs $50 ish... and attaches to your shoe to give you cadence and distance indoors.  I believe it has to be calibrated on an outdoor run first.  Garmin also makes a cadence monitor for your bike.  So that you can record your pedal cadence in addition to speed and distance.  A common mistake amongst Tri - cyclists is "give me the biggest gear and hammer it out"... learning to ride with a higher cadence and using your gears will definitely save your legs for the run.

I like the race belt for runs as well as Tri's / Du's... I can attach gels to the race belt for longer events and I can use my shirt to wipe sweat off or what ever, without the bib being on the front of it.  Just remember to pack your race bib and race belt, I have heard horror storeis of people getting to a race and leaving that item at home.  I pack my gear the night before, double check and OCD like - triple check.  Race belts are cheap and a good investment.

I definitely have to agree with Eric on the Garmin 305... It was truly the most valuable piece of equipment I bought.

For us mere mortals... bike fit, and cardio/muscular fitness is where we will see the greatest gains.  There has been a great debate on bang for the buck...aero wheels or aero helmet?  Obviously, and aero helmet is cheaper, and it has been reported that an aero helmet can shave off up to 15 miuntes for a rider in an Ironman race.  I am not convinced of that data, but I love my Rudy Project Syton helmet.  It is the most comfortable helmet I have wever worn, and there is a psychological effect when you wear it... It makes me want to go fast!

I have also read some very positive things about the "bolt-on" rear disc wheel cover from wheelbuilder.com - $65-75 bucks and it turns your stock wheel into a more aero disc with out the weight or the cost.  A good 40 or 60 mm deep wheel on the front and the bolt on disc and you are set for some decent races.  Opinions may vary, but I have yet to read anything negative about such a set up...

Since my taxes are done... I'm not paying, but daddy ain't gettin' any new toys with my refund... I will live vicariously through the purchases that y'all get to apply your funds to.  Post any new toys and subsequent reviews...

Annnd it's Monday... didn't we just do this last week?

Anyone have any rockin weekend workouts they want to report?

For me, I had a planned 4 miler on Sunday that turned into 8 because it was just too beautiful and I was running on a new path that I hadn't seen before and loved it!

Happy Monday all! That weekend flew by for me. Had to work all day Saturday so that didn't help things.

I don't know about a rockin workout but I got my 80mi ride done so I'm on recovery week   Only 5 more weeks and taper begins, geez time flys by!

Great run this weekend, nothing better than enjoying the workouts!

Nice run Nicole... it's nice sometimes to just run, and see where that takes ya.

I enjoyed my weekend of training after a very disappointing week of NOT training.  Good balance, with only one missed aspect... I wanted to get in another swim on Sunday - which got rained out (outdoor pool) - I was tempted to run Sunday after my ride...but I am trying to stick with a plan and trying not to overtrain, which is something I easily do... base, base, base... slow and steady wins the race.

I hope everyone had a good weekend and I hope it is followed by a great week.

This weekend went by waaay to fast!

Awesome run Nicole!  I love going out for a run and having it turn out to be longer than planned...those are the best!

I took advantage of our heatwave yesterday, and did a long run (9 miles).  I need to start adding in some new routes.  As much as I love Central Park, I need to start adding some new routes to change it up.

I laid around the house of Friday night thinking that I had to pick up a friend at the airport, which I didn't.  So I played some World of Warcraft.  Saturday did some more WoW did a 20 min Time Trail on my trainer watching Kona 08 which turned into a 15min TT due to going to hard right away.  Cooked dinner for a friend and I then went down town till 3am.  Did a large (relative to recent events) amount of drinking.  Sunday my roomy and his girly wanted to go running.  So with 5 hours of sleep I ran about 5-6 miles.  Legs are still a tinge sore.  That would be my weekend in a nutshell HEH.

Need to hit the Chriopractor today and swim.  Looking forward to swimming today a lot!

I took a bike maintenance class at my LBS Saturday morning. They put it on for free and plus gave a 15% discount card for a store purchase. Basically I learned how to change a flat, what and where to lube and basic maintained stuff. Then the rest of Saturday was spend cleaning the bike. I did buy my bike used plus havent properly cleaned it for 3 months. It took many rags to get the grease and grim off. But the drive trane looks so much better silver than the black it was. So now I also have a spare, Co2 and canister and tools for my ride. I figured I shouldnt temp fate much longer and not be prepared.

I ran my first race on Saturday since my injury in October. It was just a 10k but I did set a PR. I guess that rest theory works. I then did about 20 on the bike that afternoon. I was feeling it on Sunday so I took the day off and will be back out for a run tonight. 71 degrees in Atlanta today so I can't wait...

Have a great week!

Ok I can't figure it out.  Forgive my ignorance but what is PR?  I'm pretty sure it doesn't stand for Public Relations in this context.....

Congrats on the PR! Rest makes a big difference, I'd rather enter a race 10% underfit  than  1% overtrained!

This is more importrant than many give it credit for... The confidence to get through it if you do suffer a flat is one less thing to worry about come race or even long ride days.  You could always experience the flat induced - total melt down - like Norman Stadler in the 2005 IMWC in Hawaii... It's not funny when it happens to you, but it's funny to watch...

I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but a couple weeks ago I won a milkshake drinking competition....for speed, not quantity.

I saw that on the news... 12 donuts... I like 'em, especially KK, but run on a tummy full... that's gonna leave a mark!

Way to go on the milkshake contest... did you log that as a sport? What about brain freeze?...that's what would get me!

There is a race in IL every year called the "Tour de Doughnut".  Same kind of deal... and so tasty.

That is quite amusing.  But totally understandable though.  If I got 2 flats in one race, I could see me cursing up a storm or at the very least getting really pissed off.

I could definitely use more practice when it comes to bike maintenance.  Last summer I got my first rear flat....I think it took me nearly 45 minutes to fix.

We have a Tour De Donut here too... the more donuts you eat the greater subtraction from your time... even on the bike, there are several slick spots on the road thanks to those donuts...

I'll take the beer mile over the donuts...
