Sunday was my first tri.  Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even though it kicked my butt along the way.  I'll post a race report within the next couple of days, but quick summary is as follows:
swim was about average - had a hard time pacing without being able to see where I was, and also died the last 100 or so.  Bike was brutal and, not suprisingly, this led up to an even harder run.

Learned a bunch of lessons (i.e., a trainer is no substitute for the riding on the road) which I will look at incorporating in my training going forward.  There were flyers for an upcoming tri in Sept, which I think will allow for some of these changes to be measured.  Need to sign up before it sells out.

Had a great time, but somewhat dissapointed in not doing better.  But I'm also mindful that life and work has really limited my ability to get quality workouts in during June and July.  Respiratory virus this last week didn't help, either.

Thanks to you all for your support/motivation etc.  Justin, sorry I missed you brother.  Thanks for helping make the race possible.

Hey Jota, you know what they call the last person to cross the line at a triathlon?

TRIATHLETE!  Congratulations!

I've done two this year, both great learning experiences and neither one went the way I'd hoped. being flexible and adapting - I think those are the two greatest assets in the sport.

I rode 60 miles in two outings in 90-plus heat with 20 mph headwinds.  Welcome back, IceMan!  Leg was good, back sore, smile big.

Any of you other characters on Face Book?  If so, find me.  Scott Richardson joined through Urbana, Illinois.

Great effort JG!  You were in the zone when I saw you finishing!  That first one is in the books and the fun & improvement will only increase from here!  Keep up the great work ~ stay positive ~ and you will have a rockin' second race!

Clear Lake has a Sprint this year ~ on 8/22... good times!  It may be too soon for ya, huh?  I am gonna be out there taking a crack at the Olympic distance and hoping to turn in a redemption race after BSLT's run debacle!

Thanks Justin.  We are leaving Houston on a family vacation, so can't make it to Clear Lake.  I think my next race will be the Eastside Tri in Baytown on 9/13.  Didn't get registered with TAT before it filled up, so, I might try getting in on the resell or do the Cinco Ranch one later in Oct (or both).

Your TL is looking good.  Nov. is going to be here before you know it!

How often do you guys clean and lube your bike chain?  Mine seems ready for its 3rd cleaning this summer.

Also, I did an OWS clinic Sunday and it was helpful with tips and practice on sighting, pacing, starts in and out of water, transitions, goggles coming off, injury ect.

We were in Ocean City, MD on vacation and I did some OWS sessions in the Atlantic.  My husband kayaked along side of me.  Man, the surf was tough, which made for a grueling workout, but it was so much fun!  When I got out of the water I felt kind of like a bad @## with all of the tourist families staring at me.

Yeah, Terps, you're just now figuring that out?

Love this!  We are such Terps fans around here

So, I did an OWS yesterday with a bunch of older guys and one woman.  Two of the people were from the interval training I do on Thursday nights (tonight!) These people are so hard-core and amazing and I'm really excited to now be "in" with local swim/bike/runners.  I'm taking my nutrition intake a lot more seriously now, as ppl have told me that my form in all three disciplines is great...but my stamina and weight are not.  Well, those are not the reasons they said but that's what I've deduced.  Also, I just read that Lance watches every morsel that goes into HIS mouth, and he sometimes bikes 7 hours a day!  If he needs to watch what he eats to improve performance, then I no longer have any excuses.  I'm on day three of weight watchers weighing an measuring, etc.  I've gotten down to my goal weight in the past using this and so this is what I am going to do now.

I am being considerate of the calories I need for performance and doing my best to balance this out.  I'm eating the calories where needed and I'll keep a very close eye on the numbers.

I was just thinking...at 30 lb.s overweight I'm about 1/2-way in the middle of the pack in terms of tri results.  I imagine I will reap major results when I "drop" that extra weight!!!  So this is definitely a new long-term goal for me.  For once, it's not for looks, health (I'm very healthy!) or others...but for performance.  I'm hoping this rational approach will be inspiring enough to get me through those "hungry" days!!

You go girl!!!  I love it that people here just want to get "better" and keep redifining what better is.  Food intake is huge.  I learned that during P90X and I have been very bad about it this summer.  I have started to change back to my "healthy" eating, but I really need to commit.....you know, all-in or go home!!!  Momma didn't raise a quitter!!!!!

Hello fellow bad .

Terps, triathletes are an elite.  I don't care how fast someone is, if they are doing swim, bike and run and putting it all on the line, they are bad in my book.  People who run are fine.  The cyclists are fine.  The swimmers, too.  But it takes a special lovable insanity to want to put them all together and do what it takes to finish.

Grace, good for you.  Don't be afraid to ask for encouragement and support.  Remember, I've dropped 160 to 170 pounds and I did it just the way you are...measuring, counting carbs or calories, it's all good.  Boost exercise, cut calories.  There is no easier softer way.    I am focusing on losing my last 20 or so.  Like you, I imagine I will gain significant power to weight ratios on the bike and will run and swim faster without carrying the extra baggage.  My goal when I started in 2005 was to get into 36 inch pants.  I'm there and they are loose.  So now, I want to see 34s by spring.  Meanwhile, I'm counting calories (1650 today) and glad to be back doing the drills after my hospital stay.

I ran today for an hour total.  From my house to the bike shop in 27 mins, home in 29 after stopping to thank them for their get well card and drink their water.  Sore quads?  Yes.  But I made it continuous after 3 weeks away and I am so happy about that.  Pace wasn't too bad either.

The IceMan is back!

Normally once every couple of weeks, maybe as long as a month in between, or whenever it's making noise or just looks too dirty.

I have to congradulate everybody on their accomplishments and getting through the tough times.  I read the posts and I feel inspired. This has been a tough summer for me with injuries and work schedule.  I have now decided to start a weight program and try and drop 50 lbs my bext spring.  I am going to try and bike twice a week as well as run and swim at least 1 time a week.  You guys are awesome.  Grace, I too am going to keep track of what I eat.  My big problem is portion size so I will be extra careful.  My goals for the rest of the year are to run as many 5k and myabe a 10k.  I will not have time for any more tri's due to working all of September.  I thank you all.

Jota - 2009-08-17 5:29 PM Jeff, how'd your Olympic race go?

Haven't finished the race report yet, but it went reasonably well.  I had no loft aspirations of expected finishing times or paces, which is good, because by the time I got to the run I was running out of gas.

I'm really proud of the swim - not the time so much (35 min) but the fact that I swam it straight, no stopping, no backstroking to catch my breath.

I did okay on the bike (18 mph), given the number of sharp turns and the condition of most of the roadways. (Saw more racers with flats than I've ever seen before).

By the end of the bike, I knew the run was not going to go as well.  It was hot and quite humid in Indy on Sunday.  So I ran, the ran/walked, then walked/ran to the finish.

Finished in 3:15.  Not a speed demon by any means, but given the lack of volume in my training, I'm not terribly surprised.

Beyond that, it was a great event and I (mostly) had a fun time.
