Hey, good luck . . . wear the wetsuit, you will get VERY cold by the end.

OWS are tough, but like everyone said, look up every 4-6 strokes. I usually try doing it in conjunction with lifting my head for breathing to not lose too much momentum.  Also, not a recommendation, but I do tend to follow kicks or people I see in front of me as long as I know they are sighting correctly.  Alot of times as you are are first looking for a buoy, they are very hard to sight from far away!!!  I HAVE BEEN KNOW TO YELL AT THE LIFEGUARDS AND ASK --- WHERE THE HELL ARE THE BUOYS Sealed

Another tip, put your goggles a little tighter then you would in the pool.  For some reason I think you can get water under them easier in open water and it might help keep them from getting kicked off if you run into someone.  Relax in the beginning as much as you can, nerves are very high at the start of the race.

Good luck and be sure to send a good summary of how it went tomorrow.  Since you have the first race it the group, I am sure we are all jealous.

Carrie

Extremely Jealous... still at least a month away from anything even resembling a chance to race!

12.5 today last long run before the half. Ran on the blue ridge parkway which was really pretty but a lot of hills about 2000 feet of elevation gains. I was going to run 14 but I just bonked and was having some bad foot pain so I thought better of it and walked 2.5 to the house. Longest run I have done in 8 years.

randomguymike - 2010-02-20 12:23 PM Thanks for the notes everyone. Just got back to the hotel from the race. Posted the summary in my training log. Will post a full race report when I get my swim times (hopefully tomorrow). I'm sure I crushed my goal time based on my run/bike splits.

Three questions based on today. So, I can be ready for my next one.

In T1, it was a muddy mess since it rained last night. By the time I walked my bike out to the mounting area, my shoes (and cleats) were so covered in mud that I couldn't clip in for the whole bike. Any suggestions on getting around that? Is T1 typically a mess or are they typically on nice paved not mud pits?

When I got there it was pitch black and there were forms to fill out. Lots of folks had the mounted head lights. Anyone else find those useful? I'm thinking they wouldn't be as necessary in the summer when it's light out earlier, but just wondering.

Is there a good reason I should wear goggles in the swim? I found it much easier to sight without them today. Not sure if there's something I'm missing, though.

Nice job Mike.  Very solid effort.

On all the tris I've done I have probably been half on pavement and half in a grassy area.  Fortunately the grassy one's hadn't turned into a mud pit.  As far as dealing with the mud maybe keep a small rag in your saddle bag for cleaning purposes.  Or if it's really messy like you said consider carrying your shoes to the mount line.

I've seen plenty of people carry flashlights to see around transition in the early morning hours.  You think they would at least have the registration tent well lit.

I don't think I could go without goggles on the swim.  Like Carrie suggested it wouldn't hurt to try out a couple of different pairs of goggles to find a pair that you can see well out of.

That's a tough run.  Great effort.

I got some friends that are going a marathon on the parkway in April.  It has tons of hills and elev gains.

Great race.  Looks like despite the problems it went very good for you.  Whatever  the swim time, you did great.

Hey everyone, want to get the discussions going.

Wetsuit question: I need to buy a full wetsuit sometime in the next month and a half.  I think I have narrowed it down to the 2xu Elite or the Xterra Vector Pro.  They seem to be the only do that fit close enought to my height, weight, check and waist size.  Any thoughts on the two? Anyone know anything about then?  The only think I hate is a tight neck that feels like a tie. My sleeveless Zoot and I fought all last summer with that.

Also, when I do get a wetsuit can I wear it in the pool for practice before my early May race?  Just rinse it well?

Training going OK.  Indoor tri this weekend for practice.

I do not know much about the 2 you listed but I had to search a long time because of my "unusual shape" as they put it for a triathlete. (I think that was code for short and fat). I contacted De-soto and they advised they would make free alterations to a suit to make it fit properly. I am 5'9" 250 so all the wetsuits for my size were for people 6'5". They shipped the suit I swam in it marked lines where I needed it altered and I was only responsible for shipping. Great suit no regrets and you can use it for pool swims as long as you rinse it well, even neoprene suits can be worn in the pool if rinsed properly. Scuba dove for years and still have several neoprene suits that are 20 years old and have been in pools 100s of times. Friend has a 2XU and loves it but he fit neatly in an ordered wetsuit??

OK, I am little interested in the DeSoto and the 2 piece concept (thats what yours is?).  It seems that is all they offer.  How does it work getting the 2 piece off during the run to transition?  Also, where did you buy from that they did alterations for you?

If you work with Desoto direct, they are very accomodating.
As an FYI, the places they have listed in IL do not actually have a phsyical location to go to. So, I see no reason to deal through them instead of goign direct.

I have the catalog at home. I thought I remembered seeing some one piece.

I wore my wetsuit in the pool to try it out for the first time.  No problems, I just rinsed it well after.  Good luck with the wetsuit search.

Also, how does the 2 piece work?  The bottoms go up high enough so the top covers them?  Also, how do you keep the top from shimminging upward or is there a connect that goes under the legs?

Speaking of wetsuits, I was eventually going to get around to posting one to the classifieds but thought I'd see if anyone here would be interested first.  I've dropped over 20 lbs since I bought my first, so it no longer fits.  I picked up a new one during the recent Xterra promotion.

http://www.neosportusa.com/index.php?page=detail&sport=triathlete&catID=3&productID=39

Size is XL.  At 6' and 175-180, its too loose through the body for me.  It was fine when I was up around 195-200.  Only worn a handful of times.

$50 plus shipping.

The 2 piece is easier to remove. I usually have the top off with my goggles and swim cap in the sleeve before I even get to transition. Then you just step and pull off the farmer john bottom. I dealt directly with De-Soto in California.

I've been really busy and not keeping up. Here is my update:Training going good with the new group. My plan and schedule is very different. Longer long days and shorter more intense short days. It is great working out with people all the time running, riding, and swimming twice a week. Long run is 9 miles now and only had a little calf pain on a hilly run. Riding has been on trainer, but pretty intense sessions focusing on form and pedal stroke. Swimming isn't as fun in the crowd but I'm learning that I'm pretty weak at kicking but my swim speed is OK mostly due to my body shape (large chest). Did a time run trail 3k tonight in 14:55 pretty good for me and no calf pain. Doing strength workouts twice a week and enjoying it.  Really working on nutrition too. So far so good. I think by eating better I recover better and I feel really good. Weight has been dropping steady. I'm heading towards my goal of 180 lbs. Been reading my book on Endurance Athlete Nutrition and starting learn more. I've been using FRS for energy boost and I like it. All and all pretty good. I'm about 10 weeks out and feeling pretty good. We ramp up next week for build 2.

Its looking like we might get more snow next week.  Heck with the plan I'm going to ride both days this weekend since it will be in the 50s.  Run then ride Sat/ Long ride Sunday.

Hey gang!  I am on the tail end of a recovery week and feeling pretty well rested.  The next 3 week build starts tomorrow.  I keep looking at the 10 day forecast hoping to see some outdoor rideable weather.  Looks like we are not getting above 30 for the first week of March   I'm at that point in the winter where I just want to smash my trainer!

At least the sun is out for today's run.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Sorry for your forecast.  We do trainer in groups and its not so bad, but I just got back from a recovery ride outside (about 45 deg f) and sunny.  Very nice easy ride with a friend after a nice morning 5 mile run with my church group in the morning.  I ran with a friend that is recovering from cancer.  She was dreading chemo coming up next Wednesday and not likely going to run next Sat.  That puts my silly training problems in perspective.

Tomorrow I'm ridding early in the cold (30) so I can play golf after church.

Hi All.  Sorry I've been MIA for the last week or so.  Way too many days in San Francisco for meetings and such.  I love the City, but in the end, there's no place like home, right?  Got up extra early on Wednesday morning to hit the hotel's fitness center for a run.  Me and everyone else staying at the Grand Hyatt too apparently.  Every machine was jammed and a couple of us were standing there waiting.  No one was budging.  What to do?  I decided to hit the streets around Union Square instead.  In the dark.  In the rain.  Not sure how far I ran as my Garmin was going all wonky from all the buildings, but what a blast! The hotel doorman gave me one of those 'You must be nuts' look as he opened the door for me upon my soggy return.

My training definitely has fallen off track this past week.  I did manage to squeeze in a six mile run on Saturday in place of my scheduled 10 mile long run just before heading back up to the Bay Area for believe it or not, a knitting conventionLaughing with some friends.  Going to shine my regular yoga class this morning to get in a long ride on my new bike before the rain starts up again. Oh, forgot to mention the new bike.  Finally put down the plastic.  Picked up a Trek Madone 4.5 WSD from Rubber Soul Bicycles here in Fresno last weekend.  Unfortunately schedule conflicts and lots of rain have prevented me from taking it out even once.  Looks pretty gloomy out there right now, but hopefully it will be a while before the wet stuff hits.

Glad to see everyone is staying motivated to train--even with all the adverse weather in your parts of the world.
