broonsy - 2010-02-06 12:32 PMWell you are all welcome to come to my Sunday spin class in NJ.  My psycho instructor has us out of the saddle for about 80% of the class.  Easy on what my wife and friends cal...my long back (becuase I supposedly don't have a butt). Tough on the legs. Preps for any hill work for sure.
I would rather be out of the saddle a bunch. But my training schedule had me in the saddle the entire ride. I had to get up once..

that sounds like fun...be careful on the constant 'out of the saddle'..not good for the lower back...seated, high tension, lower cadence gets the job done too..28" of snow on the ground at my place...and another storm headed this way for Tues/Weds.

We only got a dusting of snow - maybe an inch at most at other places on Long Island and NYC, but man, nothing gets the weather people worked up into a lather like the possibility of a good snow storm.  They beat that story like a rented mule.

Did my second 10 mile run this morning.  Now the marathon training starts getting tough with double digit runs working up to a couple of twenty's.  I'm staying on track so I can meet my 3:45 goal.  The really hard part gets to be where do you find 20 mile routes without a repeating a lot of loops.

Wow, 10 miles is awesome. I just got back from my run today. My job today was to run 5 miles without stopping. I have been using the walk/run training method for a month. I was able to do it fine. Got in the 5 miles on a out and back route. Up hill on the way out and down hill on the way back. I maintained a good 10.75 min mile for the first 3 miles or so and kept my heart rate in the 140's. On the way back, I felt good so I pushed it a little running more of a 10 min mile pace. Total time was 52:52. Im happy with that for now. I was not pushing it hard and I kept control of my HR the entire run. It was nice to run outside for a change. This is the first nice day we have had in a few. 42 deg and sunny.... No wind..

You guys have a great Sunday.

3:45 for a marathon would be a great time!! Good luck.

Have you run a half or full before?

Since I just bought the trainer, I figured I'd find some inspirational things to watch while I'm on it.  Just ordered Spirit of the marathon and the distance: a triathletes journey...only to find spirit of the marathon on hulu.  UGHHHHHHH Should I cancel my order? I'm not sure how long things last on hulu.

Back from Hypothermic Half Marathon this morning.

Chillin' on couch, with a glass of vino, trying to soothe aching legs!!

That's a great time for a half - let alone one that cold.  Well done.
Was the whole route snow covered?  I run almost nothing on trails, so even when its snowy here, I'm on a plowed or mostly plowed road.

Rest up and enjoy the wine.

The route was mostly plowed.  About 18k, you could find pavement & the remaining 3 was snow/slush.

Gogogo, you are one tough SOB.   I got to hand it to you.  I ran this morning in the 43 deg sunny weather and was wondering when it was going to warm up here.  Hahaha

Great time too.  A lot to be proud of..

I have my first Half Marathon in 7 weeks.  I have never even ran a 10K before.   I am setting a goal of 2.5 hours.  And I think I will have to work to get there.

Thanks for the race report as well..

Thanks for your comments...appreciate it.

Don't put to much pressure on yourself for your first half. Aim to finish smiling. There is plenty of time to aim for times, on every subsequent half! Enjoy it!!!

No problem. And I wont. The Half Marathon is a warm up to my HIM in late May. I think I will have to deal with the other extreme. My HIM is in Orlando and I have been reading the race reports from last year. Everyone is complaining about the heat during the race. Unfortunately, all my training will be here and the weather will not be as hot for most of it.

I have been working outside in the high heat here for almost 15 years. I actually love the heat. I mow my lawn when it is over 100 in the middle of the day. I ran and rode last year in the heat. I may be a different animal but for some reason, I like it. I think the cold would affect me more. I guess that I will get my chance to find our in May. hahaha.. Nothing like being thrown in the fire to find out.

I will make it on my own and will be proud of my accomplishment. It is a big bite to chew, I understand, but I will make it and have fun doing it. So far, the training has been a lot of fun.. I was always someone who hated running. Now, I am starting to like it. I have always liked the biking and now, the swimming is coming around..

When I start running, the first mile is hard for some reason. I got stuff cracking, sore, grinding and then, everything loosens up and I can go. Hahaha... Don't know why. I have tried different stretching techniques and everything. I guess that is the way it is.. I usually take it easy my first mile or so....

Those race reports are huge for us who know nothing and are going into these things for the first time. Please keep them coming. I have read 20 or so from the HIM from Orlando last year and learning tons from them..

This 1st 10 minute thingy is universal.  I get this every run.  On Sunday Long Runs, I think "I can't do this today"  after about 10-15 mins just goes away.  You will get used to it...everyone gets it.

I was running with my running group recently & went back to chat with someone who was alone...they remarked "don't wanna do this today"  Anyway had a chat, etc for a minute or so & kept moving.  She came over at our post-run coffee & said "Thanks for that.  I was ready to pack it in.  Got better in a few minutes after..."

Anyway, enough of my drivel...

PS. I envy your heat tolorence...I have none!

Well I went to the Gym and used the Eliptical trainer today instead of a long run. For some reason after my run on Friday my left ankle and shin was a bit sore.  I wore a compression ankle brace all day Saturday and it felt fine today but I figured that error on the safe side was the smart aproach so I opted for 45 minutes on the eliptical for no impact subsuitute and some abb work and dumbell chest work.  This was the first time i have ever used an eliptical machine and it feels like a crazy cross between riding a bike out of the saddle and running. I have no clue how they calculate distance covered but it said 4 mile at 45 minuits so I put that in my log. Tomorrow is another cross training day  so next run isnt until Tuesday so all should be well again.

I'd have much rather ran 6 miles but I guess it was a good subsitute. I figured it was the closest to running I could get with no impact.

Male Bass are really starting to move up on a few of our power plant lake . Big girls will be on beds in a few weeks.

Assuming you are getting in your weekly long runs & some mid week running, you should finish.

Where are you with your long runs?
