Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hey everyone. I am still alive. I can't begin to tell you how crazy things are right now. Maybe I will take the time to write it out in the log. I am checking in with the couple of seconds I have throughout the day. Congrats to everyone who has raced in the past couple of weeks and who have bought new equipment. Sounds like everyone is in full swing of tri season. I hope everyone is well. |

Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Does anyone have any ideas about dealing with the cold? I did my first open water swim of the year at the weekend and had to abondon it due to inability to get my breath. I did an entry from a boat so went from zero to fully immersed. I hund onto the boat for a while to let the water heat up but when I started to swim I just couldn't breathe. It wasn't that I was working too had but the cold was taking my breath away. I thought next time I might try and float on my back for a while to calm me down. I don't think it was the cold itself and as soon as I got out I was toasty and felt like going back in again but I just couldn't breathe! Any ideas? |

This may be a stupid question, but you are using a wetsuit, correct? |

I wouldn't know personally, but a lot of people have a difficult time adjusting to the tightness in the chest area and feel like they can't breathe even when they can. |

Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Yes, I'm using a wetsuit ) The suit is tight but doesn't seem overly so and I didn't have any problems getting my breathe out of the water. Like I said I felt completely fine as soon as I'd got out. Maybe it's a psychological/physiological response to be emerged in water and a bit of panic breathing. Other than trying to float I've got no idea what else to try. ....... may be I'm just a bit wet! |

Maybe you should try either swimming in the pool to get used to the suit or try walking in the water and swim by the shore instead of jumping off a boat in the middle of the water. It will get better, you just have to keep getting in the water. Maybe someone else can offer better advise. I don't really have an issue with the water. |

Frugal Gear Geek 2199 having fun with the kids | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Kate, an old scuba trick is to bring a thermos of warm water with you. After you put on the wetsuit, pore the warm water in. This gets a layer of warm water in the suit before you hit the water. Mind you, I have never used this trick, but my neighbor, a professional diver, taught me the trick. When I hit the water and it is very cold, I will go in and dive under to fill the suit with water. Then I will just lay on my back and wait for the water to warm up in the suit a bit. Next comes getting used to the water on the face. Takes me up to 200 yards depending on how cold it is. I will breath every stroke just to get my face out of the water if necessary. Also, you can dog paddle until you adjust if all else fails. Let us know how you make out.

New user 21 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hi everyone, I'm alive as well. Life is crazy. My son turned 4, then my husband turned 33, then my daughter turned 2, then mother' s Day now Father's Day.....all in 4 weeks!!!! I've been training as much as possible. The MRI of my hip today showed moderate Brsitis o the lateral hip and a Labral tear. Ugh. We are going to give Cortisone a try and see how it goes. Biking on hills and running at all have become quite the issue. Anyway, I have done two OWS in two days. First of all, it's fricken FREEZING!!!!! 60 degrees and no I don't have a wetsuit. I almost wasn't doing the Sprint Tri June 19th but I changed my mind. It's supposed to be 90 degrees outside so that may help. My body was going numb at first. It felt like there was so much resistance compared to the pool. I made it to about 700 before I couldn't stand it. I'm hoping adeniline kicks in and warms me up. Sighting has proven quite the proble as I can't see well without my glasses from far away. I figure I'll have to use someone else in front for guidance? I actually found a house in the background up on a hill to spot but realized it's difficult to keepmy legs horizontal while doing this... Hmmm? Any suggestions? I am very glad that I did a little practice before Saturday because I truly think I may have just stepped in the water and got right back out. I have decided that my only goal is to finish his thing and still be able to walk on Fathers Day so I can make it a good one for my husband and kids. ( we just HAVE to make Mickey Mouse pancakes according to my 4 year old) sorry for rambling... I hope you are all doing well!!!! Good luck to those racing soon! |

Frugal Gear Geek 2199 having fun with the kids | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED glad to here you are getting into the water. for starters, consider renting a wetsuit if you really thing the temps will still be that cold. Most companys will apply the rental towards the purchase. As for sighting, two things. First the buoys are a lot closer than the object across the lake. They also tend to be large and bright orange, so hopefully that will help. As for the sighting, I have trouble picking up objects in the trees on the far side of the lake I swim in. Try looking for the biggest contrast in color or shade. I am fortunate enough to have a bunch of trees at one height and a gap right where I want to swim towards. Also, make a mental note as to where the sun is. When you look at the water, before getting in, picture a clock. Once you know which way you are heading, try to keep the sun at say 1:00, or where ever on the clock it is. This is by no means exact, but with a little practice, you can use the sun as a guide even when your head is in the water by where the light is coming from. Hope this helps. |

I would also suggest remembering the cap color of the wave in front of you- at my first race though what I thought was a buoy was actually a person in a red cap....and she was going off course.....kayak got us both back on track! Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Kind of slow around here, myself included. It's been a crazy couple of weeks. I think I have said this before, but the training and exercise and racing isn't the hardest part of this whole thing, it's finding the time in the day to do it. I hope everyone is on the mend. Knock on wood, I have been feeling pretty good. I have missed some workouts, but I have definitely amped it up this month. I had a great swim the other day. I think I am going to skip RI70.3 and shoot for an Oly the day before. Logistics and money are playing a factor. Some of us have only 150 days until IMAZ. I need to start focusing on that. I hope everyone is doing well. |
