Brain picking time...

I always get pain on the outside of my lower leg when running on the treadmill. Its not shin splints, as its on the opposite side of my leg. Its the Anterior Tibialis muscle. It always feels like its really tight, cramps and full of knots. I usually can roll it out before I run with a foam roller, but that hasn't been helping.  I attached a pic (which labels it "anterior tibias muscle) of a left leg so you can see where I'm talking. Any thoughts on whats causing it or how to fix it?

How old are the shoes?

They aren't that old. Its been happening for some time. In my old shoes when they were in need of replacement and in these shoes when they were brand new. From what I've noticed its only when I'm on the TM. Today its been tight all day just walking around the office.

Your gait probably changes a little since you're only moving up/down on the treadmill instead of forward-up/down.  Any chance your foot is slapping the tread?  Could also be the "sponginess" of the TM that creates more ankle flex => shin pain.  Pretty consistent on the TM?  If so, try running near the front or rear roller instead of half-way between and see if that makes a difference (try it both at the front and rear).

Other than that, I got nuthin'....

Yea, I figured it was something with my gait, but was hoping it wasn't since it'd be rather difficult to change. I'll try changing my spot on the treadmill to see if that helps. I do have an appointment with my Doc in a couple hours for something else. I was planning on asking him, just wanted some ideas so I didn't sound like a moron.

do you get in much treadmill running?  maybe the switch from the road running to TM, you could be landing/pushing off differently causing a little abuse to those muscles.  that's all i got.

Most of my running comes on the treadmill this time of year. I get out when I feel like bundling up for the cold only to have to strip in all off during my run to cool down. I figure it has to do with how I'm landing/pushing off on the TM as opposed to outside,

I was told when I had pain there, that I was hitting the ground too hard. I am still doing strength training for my legs, shins, and feet so I can learn to run 'lightly' and spend less time in contact with the ground.

I can cheer her up.  When I lived down the road in Snoqualmie and it was this time of year, I would drive to Pike's.  Visit three sisters bakery.  One sweet roll for me and a cookie for my kids.  Get a latte, but some of the cheap flowers for my wife, and I would feel all better.  Try it.  You will spend less than $15 and enjoy.  Trick two.  go for a hike or to the snow park up near the pass.

I think we all subconsciously get excited thinking a new year should bring us all these wonderful exciting things and then when it's just a continuation of the same old same old without the parties we get blah.  January is a dreary month anyway so don't beat yourself up for getting the blah's along with it.  I think the new year should start in May myself.

Do you take Vitamin D/ if not, it could give your mood a little boost. Dont beat yourself up or worry if you need to take some time, maybe plan on giving yourself some time off, say another week, then commit to a light workouts starting the 17th. Ease into it. I would encourage you to keep stretching and rolling out while your taking time off to stay limber...

ZEE744, when i get tightness in a muscle (I have cronic tightness in right glute/left IT band... I spend time every day doing deep stretching on those spots. before running, try holding a calf stretch that hits the spot for a prolonged stretch, do one minute on each side. before and again after running. Give it some time, a couple of weeks of intense stretching and it'll become more forgiving.

I know that feeling very well.  I was like that in December but I think that I have bounced back to my old self.  Take the time and relax and enjoy life.

I recently purchased a pair of Zoot compression socks and I've been wearing them on all of my longer runs for the past few weeks.  I really like them!  I definitely feel like my lower legs are absorbing less shock and feel more supported when I wear them.  I can't speak to the recovery benefits, because my runs haven't been long enough yet.

Interested to know what the doc says to get rid of shin splints. I occasionally get them (its usually when I ramp up my running volume to quickly or too much time on the treadmill) and the only way I know that helps is not to run - which seems counterproductive.

Are you supposed to wear the compression socks during or after the run or both? I also heard the cheap socks at the drugstore for diabetics work well, but have never tried them.

I have a pair of the CEP compression socks.  I've worn them for a few runs, but more for recovery than running.  (I did wear them for the October marathon.)  Haven't tried what's available at the drug store yet.

Hey Lynne, we are here so you can post when you feel good or are feeling funky.  We're the ones who understand remember?

Compression socks...during and after...I love them.

Remember to tilt the treadmill up to 1 to 1.5 %...otherwise at zero its like running downhill and you can feel knee pain, I was warned.

ingleshteechur - 2011-01-05 7:31 AM Another question!  How many of you schedule one (or more I guess) days completely off...no cardio, no weights, just a complete day off?  Mine is tomorrow and I'm already feeling the 'I should do something'...but I also know how important it is to let the body rest.  What do you guys do?

Most training plans will give you approximatly one day off per week.  Enjoy it!  I use that day to spend time (not training) with my wife.  If you think you feel weird now, wait till you do all the hard training, then you get into a big taper right befor the race, you will freek... don't worry it works.

Just a thought, I was having seriouse pain in my right hip and both knees when running anything over 8 miles.  Went to a running store to see about getting custom fitted shoes (on the recomondation of a friend).  When I got there, the actually video taped me running on a TM, then we watched it in slow motion to see what was causing my problems.  Corrective shoes fixed it.  Point is almost every cheap digital camera has the video option.  Set it up, run, then watch it see if your gait looks funny?  May not find anything, but then again, it may be really obvious once you see yourself.

I just got both for Christmas, broke my butt durring my first snowboard lesson last night, so it's gonna be a few more days in the pool befor I start using them on any runs.  Good friend of mine that is a marathon runner talked me into them, he swears by them.

I spend almost 62 hours swimming last summer. ? It's gonna be a lot harder to keep count on ?m?y? laps now, but those long hour to hour and half IM swims are gonna be much less monotonous now.
