I sense the end is near for this mentor group and it is probably fitting that we close up the group as we move into the new year.  It has been an absolute pleasure to keep in touch with you all this year.  I'll be around.  I may "inspire" you once in a while.  Hope you don't mind!  Feel free to check in with me too.  I love inspires.

No reason the group *has* to disband (I've still got protege's from 2007 I keep in touch with).

Big thanks to Mike for keeping us together and inspiring us all. Thanks for being there at Vineman when I needed you (when I forgot my nutrition!!).   it was fun racing together!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Enrique

Enrique, it was fun meeting you at Vineman and you did an outstanding job recovering from what could have been a catastrophic start to the day (the forgotten nutrition).

What have you accomplished this year? First Triathlon. First Half Marathon. Lost 15lbs.

What have you learned? Alcohol and training don't mix. How to launder performance fabrics...all the friggin' time! Injuries aren't so bad for a triathlete... you can almost always swim, even if you can't run or cycle. Everybody needs a coach. That my husband really IS a good guy.

What has surprised you? That I haven't quit. The strength of the triathlon and running communities in Miami. How many new friends I have. That I can injure myself at least twice a month. The number of books I've kindled and purchased that are ALL over the house...books on running, injuries, workouts, stretching, strengthening... good grief, I could open a library! How much I love my garmin 310x. That I love this more than golf.

It's been quite a year. Thanks for sharing it with me.

Great stuff here Steph.  Great year for you too.

Mike, we can keep the group going through occasional updates on this thread I assume?

Hi all.  Had to chime in.

What have you accomplished this year?   A lot! Despite injury that took me away from running for 3 months.

I competed in my first stair climb (Hustle up the Hancock),  Had numerous PRs in running including the Chicago Marathon and qualified for Boston.  Also, met some fantastic on-line friends here in this forum.  Hope we can continue to check in.

What have you learned?  That you can come back from injury stronger than you were before.

What has surprised you?   That I came back from injury stronger than I was before.  I turned 50 this past summer and my running times were the best they've ever been.  My last run was the Hot Chocolate 15k, which I did in 1:13:26.  NEVER in my life did I think I could run that fast for that distance.

What have you accomplished this year?

I got two cool tattoos evidence of my first Ironman.  Wisconsin 2011 finisher.

What have you learned?

You can do anything you want to if you want to bad enough to make the sacrifices necessary to reach the goal.

What has surprised you?

This is the hardest question.  I've had great coaching in the water, on the bike and the run and great mentors here on BT.   They either taught me what I needed to know or helped me find the answers. So, the idea is to have as few surprises in the racing as possible and I accomplished that.   Even when the cramps came at mile 80 on the bike, I was prepared mentally to overcome the problem.  I am going to be honest, looking back at myself at 400 pounds in 2005 and now, what surprises me is that even though the effort was very very hard at times, overall the transformation from a gigantic food abuser to IronMan was far easier than I would have ever imagined.  It was a matter of having the desire, then finding the right people to coach me on the bike, then the swim and run, and assembling a great group of positive people in my life to encourage me while I stayed on course.  The first day my bike coach asked me what my wildest dream was, I said, "Do you think I could be an Ironman?" I'd never done a sprint at that time and I was 56 years old.   He said, "Sure you can."  And then 1000 days later, I did.

I decided to do the mentoring thing... not because I'm experienced enough to be a HUGE help, but I think I'm a pretty good cheerleader and poster. And of course, I can FIND answers.

So if you feel like it, join me in the Steph Sprint mentor group. )

2012 is a year for change!

I resigned from Caterpillar today after 15+ years with the company and start with another company in Utah later this month.  We have to sell a house here in Illinois so I'll be solo for a while.

Probably no triathlons (at least not any iron distance races) this year while I learn a new job and company and take advantage of a short tenure in Northern Utah to hike and camp (when I'm not working or traveling).

Good luck Mike, as you head west today.  Great things can come from big changes.  I know (IMKY 2010).  Thanks for all your help over the past two years.  All the difference in the world is made by a simple encouraging word, and you have given me plenty.

Congratulations Mike!

So, leaving good ol' Peoria, Illinois. Hmmm...scenery wise I think Utah wins hands down.  Sorry we never were able to connect whenever I was down there visiting my son.

Good luck to you as you start a new chapter in your life.

Susie

I made it to Utah yesterday with no drama on the drive.  It was quite emotional to sort through my stuff and decide what to take this trip (very little room), what to hold, what to give away, and what to throw away.  I threw away some receipts from exchanging money in Norway (1982) and a super-bounce ball that crackled when squeezed it was so old.  I passed along some very old race t-shirts and some other shirts to my boys.

Leaving was quite emotional as well, and every mile I drove was another mile between me and my family.

I ran this afternoon, taking a jaunt through town on a relatively warm afternoon.

I'll report to my new position tomorrow morning, go to the post office and bank Tuesday morning.

Maria and I have made big life changes like that in the past.  I completely understand.  It is a rollercoaster of emotions.  Excitement mixed with sadness, moving accross the country is bittersweet.  Don't forget I will be in Salt Lake in a couple of weeks if you are around town let me know...

You think the 310 has a lot of data.... you should see this thing.  Need and engineering degree just to process it.  16 different pieces of data available to all be displayed at the same time, and that is just for swimming in the pool... crazy.

People are really loving that 910xt. I bought a separate swim watch (actually a gift from my spouse) for swimming. www.swimovate.com

I really like it, uploads data to pc and everything. I just can't see buying that 910 yet! $$$$$

Hope all you fuzzies are having a great race season so far!
