No training for me today and here's why:  Drunk driving doesn't pay!  This guy broke an 85 foot pole and dropped power to 500 customers and many of them were businesses that will sue for lost revenue.  The cost for us to replace the pole will be $150k.  Someone wanna drink?

I worked 17.5 hours on this pole......double time.

jpbis26 - 2011-01-16 1:59 PM Hi everyone,
Sorry to hijack your thread, but I was in a group with J & Dirk in the summer/fall and just wanted to let them know that I rode 60 miles today. Longest ride ever for me. Had to let them know. They knew me when I struggled to clip into my shoes, and gave me so much great advice like I'm sure they are doing for all of you.

Thanks J & Dirk

Feel free to hijack anytime.

Great job on the 60 miles...that's a great accomplishment.  I haven't ridden over 50 miles since this past summer...and the past few 45 mile rides I have been on have been tough.  60 is not easy for anyone.

Did my first half marathon today.  My target time was 2:11 and my dream time was 2:05 and I did it in 2:03:25 so I was super happy with that!!!  Honestly guys can't believe that just a year and 3 months ago I ran my first 5k (30ish lbs heavier and it took me 44 minutes!!!!).  So happy with how my running is progressing.

No GI issues during race...NOW I'm having them...ugh.  I ate a huge plate of french toast right after the race and haven't had another thing since.  Not hungry.  This week recover and then I'll have to really get serious about all 3 disciplines again.  Bike especially.

Great job.  2:03 is an awesome time for your first...especially where you came from.  You have plenty to be proud of.

And I'm the same way after a hard race.  I have a hard time eating consistantly.  Almost as if my body is too tired to eat.

Wow

How did the pole break way up at the top like that?  Or is that a separate pole that fell over onto an adjacent one?

He hit a guy wire that leveraged the pole over.  We wouldn't let the police remove the vehicle until we had made enough repairs to stabilize the pole.  It couldn't have broken in a worse spot.

this weeks goals for training for me will be to get what I can in, when I can.  There are 2 swim meets this week and I already missed a solid day of training for work.  I will not get the usual time in this week and there is really nothing I can do about it.  I hate weeks like this but I know they come from time to time, so I'll take it in stride as much as possible.  Swim season for my daughter is almost over so that might help but my youngest daughter is considering track so I am not sure what will happen there.  I hope she does because I would like to see her compete in something but she really doesn't care much about athletics.

tri808 - 2011-01-10 1:18 PM Now that I know more specifically my injury...my goals will be

Ride - 3 hours trainer & either 2.5 hour outdoor group ride or 2 hour trainer ride saturday.
Run - 30+ miles.
Swim - nada...rest the hand.
Weight - lose something...weighed in at 161.2 this morning.

Following up on last weeks goals

Ride - 2.75 hours trainer & 2.5 hour group ride.  Close enough in my books
Run - 39 miles.  Felt really good doing so too.
Swim - zero...just like planned
Weight - exact same weight.  But not bad considering I didn't eat very well this past week.

Had a pretty good 54 mile ride this morning.  Longest I've gone since August.  Didn't get in enough calories though, and somewhat faded at the end.  Going to take a nap and decide if I want to swim this afternoon.

Hit the gym this morning for a swim followed by a run. I swam 1500m 100 warm up, then 7x200 finished the swim in 45 minutes. Hit the dreadmill for a run 2.5 miles followed by runners boot camp where I ran another 3 miles and did some weight training.

It was actually warm today 42, so when I got home I hurried and changed and took my bike out for its first ride. I did a quick 6 mile ride, don't know how fast but I loved it. It will take a little getting use to the gears, there seems to be a gap in the back gears. Clipping in for the first time was a little tough, it took me three times the first time. Half way through the ride I stopped and tried it again in a parking lot and it went right in. I love clipping in the power you can produce is crazy, I had the bike in the tallest gears and tried standing up. It was tougher then I thought the cadence was way fast, that will take some getting use to. I need to get a bike computer so I can see how fast I am going for better training. I will also have to wear my heart rate monitor. I don't know if it was because it was my first ride or I was just so excited I was riding my bike but my heart rate felt way high. What type of bike computers do you guy's use. I am looking at the cateye 5 function it has Displays speed, maximum speed, trip distance, total distance, and clock. I figured for $18 I couldn't go wrong.

Weekly goals
Drink plenty of water
Eat smaller portions
Run 15 to 20 miles
Ride 60 miles "spin Classes unless it warms up"
swim 4500m
Have fun while training

I have a Cateye Astrale 8 that seems to work well for me.  it has a couple other features that seem to be pretty useful such as: cadence, avg speed and ride time.  I actually would like to have an additional feature of avg cadence.  You can get one of these computers for $30 here
 http://www.nashbar.com/bikes//CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10053&catalogId=10052&langId=-1&pageSize=24&beginIndex=0&searchType=resultSet&sortBy=Dollar+Rank%2F%2F1&cn1=&searchTerm=cateye+astrale+8

I finally got a start on my training this week.  I went for 1.5 hours on the bike for 30.4 miles on a 10 minutes on, 3 minutes rest main set.  It was a pretty good effort and I hope to get another longer ride in again on Saturday.  Next on the adgenda will be 5 miles tomorrow night.

I'm on the techy side with my bike computer as I have a garmin 500.  Mainly to read my power outputs.

Before that I had a cateye double wireless.  In hindsight, I don't really rely on cadence too much.  I kind of have a feel for what's too high and what's too low.  So if I had to do it all over again (assuming no power meter), I would just go with a cateye wireless speed computer.  I think they run about $45-60 retail.  But if you don't mind the wired feature...those work just as well.

pistuo - 2011-01-17 3:44 PM Recovery week is over... got a 10 mile run in today.  Any of you guys ever have soreness in your knees?  Any remedies?

The only knee pain I have delt with is in my patellar tendon...which is right below the knee...but the pain will feel like it's right below the knee cap.

But with any knee soreness...I would recommend RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and just try to monitor it.  I was able to buy those straps that go under your knees to put pressure on the tendon, and slowly I was able to build my running back up.  But I had to ice my knees after anything over 8 miles for a few months.  Now...I don't need to ice at all.  But I still wear the straps as preventative measure

Sorry it's been so long since I've participated - I really don't have any excuse. My goal is to keep up with all the conversations - wow I've only been gone a week and half and there was 15 pages to read - sorry to say I didn't read them all. I'll slowly go back and read the postings. For those of you who are beginning to compete - congrats. Nothing really begins here - tri ways - until late May/early June.

How I envy those of you who live in warm climates (stays above freezing). We are expecting it to be a bit chilly here in Minneapolis for the next week or so. Plus they are forecasting snow almost every other day. I went corss country skiing last week end - had a blast. BUT I went on the lazy wagon for a week. Time to get the heck off my butt and begin working.

Swimming - short term work on technique/drills for the next few months. After swimming off and on for the last few years I've finally figured out what they mean by feeling the pull of your stroke. By focusing on drill work only I've finally made the connection. One drill I've been doing is counting strokes per lap - went from 22 to 17 - to say I was shocked is an understatement.

Biking - have begun the spin class thing. I need to make sure I get there early on Friday afternoon as there is a 90 minute class - fills quickly. short term goal - spinning a minimum of twice per week but will try for three times. I can hardly wait for nice weather to get here.

Running - short term either snow shoe or ski to keep things going. Mid Feb begins group runs - I can hardly wait.

Weights - keep doing them.

Wow, intense.

Last week someone shot out a cable for the internet, took out 900 wires that they have been working on for a week, poor guy in a tent on top of a pole trying to sort through all these wires, I woulda thought it was more modern than having to do it by hand, but I guess when it is a mangled mess what else ya' gonna do!

Starting to realize I'd rather do 6 five-ten minute workouts a week than three 15 or 20 minute workouts.

Problem with many "easy" plans is that they think 20 minutes is easy six times a week. When I do that I end up injured: I'm an injury prone overweight ectomorph really need to ease back into training, especially have had this annoying cold/bronchitis for about a month now.

So, my new goal is extremely short, but more frequent workouts. For now I'm still sick, just doing every other day enough to get the blood flowing.
