Let us know how it goes...I have a love hate relationship with the wetsuit.  I am much faster swimming in it, plus warmer, but if you saw me trying to get the stupid thing off, you might think I was having a seizure.  First time I wore it, I thought I was gonna need the jaws of life to get it off, or simply ride the bike with it on.  Buffoonery.  YMMV.  And I LOVE OWS...it's so much more interesting than 100 laps up and down the pool looking at a black stripe.  Ugh...

Today is our wedding anniversary and this weekend Andrea's dad got us a timeshare Friday-sunday. He works for Hilton grand vacations on captiva island so he got us a room our there. So in the relaxing atmosphere I forgot about training, but I did manage to get to the pool today and will be back on schedule next week.

If I plan to compete in any of my tri's, I simply need to swim more.

March 2011 goal: swim 20,000 yds

Anyone else wanna set a March goal that the group can encourage you to achieve?

I like this goal, Swimming is my weak point and I need to build up to be ready for a OWS in may only 400 Yds but I tanked in a 400M pool swim in a 50M pool so going from the 25 yd pool to 50M did enough damage to me I don't want to run into that in an OWS.

My goal will be 12,000, and if I hit 3 workouts a week I should be able to go over that mark especially if my distances start to increase which is something I need to work on. Getting my workouts over 1,000yds will be a good start and I think 1600 will be another milestong I'm reaching for. Keep on me if you don't see my swim logs increasing and being consistent 3 days/week.

A few pics from my first tri... me coming out of the swim shows how exhausted I was. Forgot to put my jersey on before the bike LOL! Also the transition area was an open parking lot...It was a beginners race and no too many participants so everyone grabbed a spot.

I'll help b**ch at you if you like, but can I ask what your plan is to get those 20K yds?

I'll set a goal...I want at least 4 strength/core sessions a week, and I have dropped 2 for the last 2 weeks (i.e. I am a lazy sack...).  Feel free to ping away...especially if I hit Saturday and only have 2 done...that means I HAVE to do one each day on Sun and Mon, and I won't get it done...

Nice pix...your race reminds me of a Y-tri I did in July.  It was tiny and not super competitive or sophisticated, but it was SO fun...

are you adding more swim sessions or just lengthening your exisiting ones?  I need to swim more too, and start going faster in the time I have at the pool. I have to look at my schedules but I just might jump on your 20,000 yard challenge

Both - add more sessions and lengthen existing ones.  Currently, I only go during my lunch break so I'm limited to about 25 min. and I can only do about 1100-1300 in that time.  I've generally done one Saturday morning per month where I can go longer in time/distance.

All I know is that my form and technique (and ultimately my speed) in the pool became much better in the months that I would swim 14-15k.

There are some that believe that shorter sessions like what I'm currently doing are good (better?) because you can focus on form without getting tired and sloppy from a longer/harder workout.  I don't plan to change my 2x/week lunch time swims.

My plan is this:
2x week lunch time 25min. (1100-1300 yds)
2x week morning 45min. (1800yds)

Tomorrow morning in the pool.

4 day countdown until my triSurprised  I am not sure if I am ready.  This started with a bunch of my co-workers and we all decided to do a tri together,  There was going to be 12 of us.  The last person bailed yesterday Cry.  I'm kind of nervous about the open water swim and having to ride a strange bike (renting a bike was much harder than I thought it should be.  They don't have a bike in my size, so one of the guys in the bike shop is renting me his personal bike. It's either really nice or weird, I can't decide which).

I did my first tri with two friends, both of whom tried to bail on me.  I told them it was okay if they were too scared to compete with me since I was clearly going to smoke them both and they had a change of heart.  I did end up beating them but since one was on a mountain bike and the other panicked halfway through the swim it was a pretty hollow victory.

I'd say it's a nice thing.  Guys who work in a bike shop know how important bike fit is, and if they couldn't even get you the right size frame they'd be almost sabotaging your race to rent you what they did have.

sometimes my training is the best part of my day. Its either the one thing that goes right or I get accomplished that day. I'm not saying that this is everyday but today thats how it feels. I only did 3 miles tonight but it was after yoga and I'm glad I got out the door when normally I would make excuses. So I put in a good hard effort and came out with two 7:30's and one 6:45 mile at the end. I was surprised and excited about the 6:45 it was a good way to finish the workout.

Tomorrow should be a long run around an hour, maybe go over an hour since I've been doing an hour for a while? that will depend on pace though. THursday a swim, hopefully 1,000 yds. Not sure what friday will bring maybe a bike run brick. Next week should be a good week since its spring break from school, I'll probably focus on swimming distances increasing and bricks. Hold me to it please, if you don't see me training send me an inspire thing to light a fire underneath me!

Hope everyone else is training hard, having good workouts!

Since you raced this last year and Ironman races are different than Playtri races; what time should I plan on my wave to start?  Website says the first wave goes at 7am (pros probably)....should I expect age groups to go at 8am? 9am?  Thanks

Also, what about hydration on the course?  Do they pass out gatorage/water bottles at rest stops?

I'm using March and the longer workouts to dial in my nutrition plan for the HIM.

Saturday I have a 2.5 hr. bike and a 3.5 mile run brick on the agenda...how would you suggest expiramenting with nutrition during this workout?

My tentative idea for race day is to have a Clif bar after the swim/start of the bike, then another bar at the 2 hr. mark (estimating it will take me 3-3.5 hours on the bike on race day). I will also alternate water and IM Perform on the bike for fluids.

Then for the run, I am thinking I will use Hammer Gel at every hour and continue with water and IM Perform for hydration.

So how can I take this big picture race-day plan and put it into practice this Saturday? I typically do a Clif bar before starting my long bike sessions, anyway, but I would like to have one closer to the run this weekend to see how my body responds to the solid nutrition going from bike-run.

Last year I didn't want any fluke to ruin my chances to finish my first HIM, so Nik & I each took two pair of goggles to the swim start. Luckily, neither one of us needed the backup pair, and nobody else in our wave was in need, so we "donated" them to the aquatic life.

Cool pics, too...I always enjoy seeing others' triathlon experiences.
