Extreme Veteran 701 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed sfred45 - 2011-04-25 11:19 PM Two questions...Neck pain on the bike...whenever I ride more than 20ish miles on the road I get pretty intense neck pain. Anyone else experience this? Do I need to raise my handlebars? Or do I need to get a professional bike fitting (difficult with a baby at home). The weekend rides get longer and longer and the last 30 mile ride I suffered for about a week with the neck strain...Trainer question...just bought a Kurt kinetic fluid trainer - do I need to buy a trainer tire? From what I read the trainer can ruin the back tire. Should I just shut up and get on the trainer or wait and order a trainer tire? Steph ... I had the same pain when I first started cycling. Mine was mostly on the bottom, right side of my neck at the shoulder. The more miles I began to put on the road, the less I noticed the pain. It's part of balancing out the tension-weight you carry in your arms-shoulders vs. the weight you support through your core. Your hands should rest lightly on the bars, with minimal tension in your shoulders and weight mostly supported through your core. I think you'll see that the more you ride - the less the pain. Bottom line ... shut up, get on the trainer and start cranking |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Gary, Please add my races, which aren't many at this point. At the moment I have targeted two sprint distance tri's. Both in Michigan. July 10 is Grand Haven Y and August 13 is Millenium Tri in Grand Rapids. I also hope to do the Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids, usually the second weekend in September, but don't see it posted yet. In addition to the tri's I hope to work in a couple of local 5K's for charity. Edited by dwpiggott 2011-04-27 2:02 PM |

Member 34 Burlington | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Hello to everyone from hot Vermont! Before today we hadn't seen 80 degrees (let's be real - we hadn't even seen *70* degrees) since last August/September. A request for advice from those who've been doing this more and longer than I. Context: I started on the couch in January, and for the last 3.5 months have been slowly exercising more and more, and now am doing an Olympic distance (run-focused) 20 week plan. I seem to always feel like I'm on the verge of tweaking/pulling my right hamstring. I did tweak it two weeks ago (I think I may have overstretched), and then took it easy and tried to not push it. And thought I was all good until I was out biking today, and realized I felt like if I didn't shift to easier gears I was going to strain it again. And my right quad felt similarly close to overdoing it. Is this just beginner's battles? I want to maintain my training goals, but also want to take care to not injure myself. I have not been doing weight training (not sure when I'd fit it in), so maybe that's the problem? Kim |

Kim You're probably going to have a lot of people on here just tell you to suck it up, but as someone who is perpetually injured, my advice is the opposite - you know your body and if you feel like you're about to get injured then you probably are. Every time I try and ignore a pain it ends up totally screwing me later. Example: current pulled butt muscle. Tried to ignore it and now cant run or bike at all. There's a difference between muscle soreness (normal) and thinking that pulling something. You know your body. Trust yourself.

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Hey all! Randy - yep, right call. I really believe having a strong bike leg on a 70.3 is important. Tracy - Not a stupid question. Triathlons have some of the same business issues as other sports. WTC (World Triathlon Corporation) has turned the half-ironman into Iron Man 70.3. Kim - IMHO, its fairly common for folks new to the sport push themselves past what their bodies can handle (ramp up to) at the time. Build slowly, listen to your body and you will get there. I would take it easy on the hamstring and work on stretches. While I was doing PT I had a great sheet that showed proper stretches. If I can find it I will scan it in and send to you. Trainer work today and Swim/run tomorrow. My daughter has her Girls on the Run 5k on May 7th and I will be running it with her. We will be practicing tomrrow. Good night! |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Kim, I too came off a couch and after a lot of research, delayed my Tri dream for a full year to give my body time. Injuries can stop you all together if not careful. The single thing that helped me the most after starting my program last year was a 15-20 minute walk before stretching. It adds to the over all time needed for a workout, but if I always walk my 20 minutes before biking running and swimming, I have been able to remain injury free. Take your time, you have a lifetime now to stay off the couch, no need to hurry. |

It took me 6 months to learn to swim and the season was over by that time. Like dw said, take your time. |

Veteran 173 Lees Summit | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed I know that there are some new folks in this group. I'm not in any real position to give advice since i'm pretty slow at everything, but if i could give one piece of advice is to find yourself a Masters Swim Class. I have improved 100% in a month. They can work miracles in this class. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Morning all! Short run and swim yesterday. Daughter tried videoing my swim but low end phone and the resulting video is too hard to see anything. Off to the LBS today as I had bought a used rear rim from someone local, bought a used cassette off ebay, then picked up tire/tubes and yesterday put it all together. Found that there is a shim that goes between the cassette and the wheel which I didn't have. Hopefully the LBS has one and my trainer wheel will be complete. |

Have a great week end everyone! |

Thanks Gary for this tip, and I will definitely ask the instructor about this in Monday's Master Swim class. Simply put for me, this is about working smarter - not harder. And in the world of this sport, working smarter equates to efficient energy use and overall faster times. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Hey all! Busy weekend! 3 soccer games (son), 1 softball game coached (for Daughters team), two piano recitals (kids), and one play (daughter) along with the usual weekend stuff. Was going to start the next challenge but no time plus trying to get ready for first day of new job tomorrow I got nothing done. Sorry! We will start our next challenge on Monday, May 9th. Until then lets keep this thread going! BTW, I love the inspires I that I have got! Two requests: 1. Use your BT logs - if you record your workouts somewhere else that is fine but if you don't then please use the logs. Will help if you ask others for help. 2. Put up an Avatar picture! Placing a face (even if its 100pixels wide)/image just makes it a little nicer. QUESTION FOR THE GROUP: For those who have or have not done a tri - What is (or was) your biggest concern/worry about the tri? |

Veteran 122 Lincoln, NE | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed so far, the ones i have done, the swim has been in a pool but once i start doing oly's, OWS is definitely my biggest concern. Lincoln Marathon was today. I volunteered to be a course monitor and my wife and sister in law did the HM. 10,000 runners was very inspiring. |
