Catching up on my reading before heading out for a run.  I thought I would pass along an interesting collection of blog posts from DC Rainmaker for your reading enjoyment and education at some point.  If you're not familiar with DC Rainmaker, he's a techie out of the DC area and an accomplished triathlete.  He does a lot of technical product reviews and now has a weekly round up over at Slowtwitch.  Oh, and he's here on BT too.  Anyway, check it out for some great blogs covering
SBR in one easy to read recap:

Thanks Michelle, some great info there for some weekend reading

YAY for the first workout back post pneumonia, Jessica!!!!

I walked so fast on my lunchtime walk that my shinsplints actually hurt.  Mind you, I didn't know I had shin splints until I saw the ortho about the gastrocs and they never hurt before......and really, on a walk?  I find it amusing given my nonexistant run volume.

That's when I started getting shin pain too.  I found that when I walk I raise my toes really high compared to when running and was working the muscles around the shin differently.  Felt like shinsplint but the pain went away much quicker.

I hope you have a good ice machine, you've been using quite a bit this year

Hey all!

Sorry I've been MIA again.  Things have been crazy both on the 'get our house on the market' front and at work.  My training is suffering and I'm working very hard not to let it get me down.

I did have my TI clinic yesterday and it was AWESOME!!  There were only three of us (and three coaches) so we all got a lot of indivdual help.  All three coaches were great but I probably spent the most time one on one with Shane who was the master.  Wow, what a fountain of knowledge!!  I was given a lot of excellent feedback and focus points to work on going forward.  I'm really looking forward to swimming after work today so that I can really start to solidfy everything I learned.  I have a feeling that if I can get all this new stuff mastered, my goal time for my first tri of the season should be in the bag! (swim goal time, anyway!).  Yay!

Jessica - glad to see you back to your workouts!

Rob - congrats on beating your goal for your run...that's awesome!!

Judi  - I often get shinsplints from walking way more than from running, so it makes sense to me.  I walk heel-to-toe where as I run with a more mid-foot strike.  That heel-to-toe action puts stress on my lower legs that I'm not used to!

Sounds like the TI clinic was good for you!  That's terrific news.

Yeah, I figure the heel toe action of walking with old running shoes is the culprit but I refuse to wear the new ones to just walk.  They are waiting for my PT to allow me to run again.

In the meantime.....I rode my bike to my appointment today.

Hey Catherine, I have the old (circa 2004) version of the TI DVD's, and book (although lost somewhere around the house). Trying to "get it" when doing my swim workouts, but the effects are usually fleeting. What did you find they worked on the most in the clinics?

55 more days until IMAUS

Hey Chris, I'm sure the excitement is building I just picked up a copy of Australian Triathlete today at the local newsagent and noticed it had a couple of pages on the new course for 2011.

Thought you might be interested, so I have scanned as a PDF, the link is below to download it. Sorry about my crappy scanner, but hope it helps with something. Let me know if it doesn't work.

I did it!  I wasn't even up to 3 miles, and trained for about 9-10 weeks I think.  I think you could definitely do it, even if you just want to finish.  I ended up going just under 2:10, but depending on your goal I think its definitely doable.  Stick to the schedule of the long runs.  At 8 weeks out you should be at 5 miles so you're right on track!

http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

I'm no expert, just sharing my experience and opinion, take it for what its worth!

on another note, in browsing the forums I've come across HTFU.  I thought it meant "hurry the @(#)* up", but it seems to be used in other contexts.  Anyone care to shed some more light on this?

Hello all, hope everyone is having a good week.

Members of my local triathlon club alerted me to the creation of a new 1/2 marathon in my area. The date for the race is May 15, 2011, about 8.5 weeks from now. Several friends have asked me to join them in the race.

I have some reservations about this. I've been racing triathlons for a year, but have not completed any road races longer than 4 miles (my latest was this past weekend). My longest run has been 5 miles.

I am fairly certain that I could run/walk the course and complete it, but I would really like to be able to do better than that.

Has anyone had experience with an aggressive run training program 8 weeks in length? Is it even possible to increase run distance from 5 to 13+ plus miles in 8 weeks? Should I even be considering it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

--Rob

As long as you are planning to do run walk intervals I think you would be okay following a conservative plan.  THe goal is to finish in one piece, not to slay a time goal for the first one!  Higdon plans have a good reputation so without even opening Lee's link I would say probably a good plan.

The three of us in the class were all at pretty vastly different levels, so after the first hour or so, we all split up with an instructor to work at our own pace, so I'm not sure what the others worked on.  When we were all together, they had us do the superman drill followed by quite a bit of drilling in the 'spear' position.  This position is critical to get correct and be comfortable in...  Then we moved on to the "spear switch" where we got the feeling of the body rotation creating the propulsion (another key) before we all split up.  I had the positioning and rotation down pat, so we moved on to correct arm movement and kicking - others worked on other areas.

I would focus first on feeling balanced in the water.  That came easy to me, but my husband spent weeks on it before he felt it.  And then work mostly on getting the spear down and then using the spear-switch until you feel the propulsion from the core rotation.  That was huge for me because that helped me tie the upper body and lower body together instead of them working independently.

Have you seen the super popular you-tube video of Shinji from TI-Japan?  It's an amazing video and I've studied it quite a bit myself.  Turns out, Shinji taught the stroke to himself (no coaching) using the DVD's and books!

Thanks so much.  Gives a little more detail than the athlete's guide.  Your scanner works just fine.  Thanks again.  I'm going to map the bike course out and try to figure out the elevation.

Sure you could do it but take it easy.  Following the 10% rule, increasing run mileage 10% per week, if you're at 5 miles now in 8 weeks you'll be just under 11 miles as a long run.  This is a couple of miles short of the half so you'll have to take that into account but you can do it.  Just be careful and listen to your body.

I also had great success with the walk run method while rehabbing my achillies and mixing it up between running an hour straight then switching to walk/run for the next hour.  Find a plan that you like and trust and run with it.

I need a goal race.....unfortunately there isn't any new progress on my PT front so I can't plan anything.  BUT, there is this possibility......Dud, you will think it hysterical.....

1 mile OWS Ocean swim.  There is an event in Ocean City, MD while we are there on vacation this summer (10 days of beach, I can't wait!!) called Captain Craig 1 Mile Swim.  They also have a half miler but I figure I should go the full to put my forced swim focus to use.  Problem is that it's the last night we are there and our family (camp with my older brother and friends) always does a traditional cook all the fish you caught this week dinner on our last night there....I need to convince them to make the fish dinner on Friday so I can do the OWS race on Saturday evening.

And there's a minor detail......my ocean swimming is limited at best.....more like playing in the surf.   This would definitely be a non race, more like let's see if I can keep from freaking out in the ocean event.

THe website says you swim with the current, so other than waves and salt water it shouldn't be a terribly difficult thing.....and I did do a 1 mile river swim a few years ago without a panic attack.

Use it as a study swim.  Not racing but not slow rolling either.  Sounds like fun and a good goal to keep your extended water time interesting.
