Swimming and running we both out today (pool closed, and ankle issues) so today I did another hour on the turbo.  Ankle is feeling much better, so hopefully can manage a run tomorrow.

I feel like I'm pulling a Gabe, but I lost 3.2 lbs yesterday. This is always what happens to me after a monumental pig out, followed by eating very low carb the next day. You lose a lot of water weight.

Rachel, the weight fluctuates day to day, sometimes after a hard weekend of training I weigh in an extra 5lbs until everything is flushed out (inflammation). Trend it and that is when you notice loss and gains, but over a long period.

JoePetto - 2012-01-01 6:14 PM So I have seen lots of references to Maffetone since joining this group. I downloaded the most recent endurance book on my Kindle while on vacation and have yet to start it in earnest. Flipping through the chapters, I like what I am hearing, but it is very coming from a very different than i am used to. I followed the Running Less plan from the Furman Institute for my marathon which focuses on fewer but more intense workouts. I feel like that plan ultimately left me flat and burned out a bit come race day. So I am open for a different approach. What are the keys to following Maffetone successfully? Are there areas which can or should be tweaked? Are there any HIM plans out there that work particularly well following the Maffetone approach?
The entire method (as you're about to discover when you read through the chapters) is heart rate based training without the "zones" approach but rather a formula that is different from person to person and has a few variables.

The concept is "less is more" and it addresses training as part of fitness (nutrition and rest are just as important) and the creation of a huge aerobic engine to make your slow become faster. Ask the old group members, some of them were very skeptic and after trying it swear by it. I know I do. The majority of the training is done at moderate efforts, so you never "suffer" the workouts, and you don't finish them exhausted.

I tried to get the kindle version of the book today, and it looks like it's not available in the UK!  I'm planning on buying the book (have amazon vouchers from christmas earmarked for it), however between now and the middle of march in addition to a full time job and training, I've also got 4 text books of stuff to learn for promotion exams at work and about 100 hours of stuff to do for my tri coaching course.  I haven't managed to read an actual book in about 3 months, and I can't see that changing any time soon.

When I signed up for the coaching course I wish I'd known (a) how much work it was and (b) that it finishes 2 days before the exam at work.  If I'd known those two things I'd have put it off for a year...

So I was wondering if someone could give me a brief overview of what I need to know to benefit my training now rather than waiting 2.5 months before I get a clue?

Thanks.  I usually only log my weight once a week for that reason.  Otherwise it's very easy to get hung up on the day to day fluctuations.  I'm also posting my weight on facebook once a week for all my friends to judge me Wink.  I did it last year and it really helped keep me motivated, knowing that my friends would be commenting on it each week.

Use a heartstrap and do the vast majority of your runs and bikes at (180 - age) beats per minute. Eliminate most refined carbs from your diet.

I hesitate to post on facebook because of the reaction I already get about my size.  Unfortunately they see my size different than I do because they aren't running with the extra 8lbs.  I'm a pound less than the day I graduated over 20 years ago, but even then I wanted to lose the extra pounds.  Reduced white carbs again and broke back out the "Big Book".  Heading to the grocery store in a bit.

Temps are going to drop to low 40s (wind chill in low 30s with winds in excess of 20 mph) for my bike ride tomorrow morning, and to low 30s for my swim (outdoor pool) wednesday morning....BRRRRR

Any advice from my cold friends up north? What do you wear for a bike ride?  Guess for most of you this will qualify as good weather, but I have NO cold gear, so planning to wear a light sweater or windbreaker with my usual shorts. Actually, more concerned with the winds than the temp, I think I will be practicing staying in my drops a lot. Its going to be a fun ride!

Scott and I have the indoor trainer for that very purpose.  The winds here get about 20mph often and gusts over 40mph.  Wind chill in the am can be in the single digits.  I was planning on using my ski gloves on the bike if I do brave the outdoors and well and my under armor gear.  I don't have winter gear either and I am trying to pc some things together.  Also, shoe covers have been highly recommended.

I rode in exactly those conditions last week. I would definitely wear the windbreaker over a long-sleeved tech shirt rather than the sweater. I'd also, if you can, find something long for the legs but you may be fine. My legs get cold a lot faster than my upper body especially on the bike.

I don't live in extreme cold weather like Mitch, Barry or Chris but I ride up to the low 20s and the trick is layers and no exposed skin. For the face a balaclava, for your torso a base layer, a cycling jersey, arm warmers and a cycling jacket on top, for the bottoms lycra tights or leg warmers with cycling shorts on top and neoprene booties (these are extremely important).

Biggest issue for me are fingers and toes. Smart wool socks with booties help, but still don't do the job below 35 degrees. Hands are really tough since they are not moving much. I where liners and a thicker glove up to 30 degrees. Below 30 it is usually ski gloves or the trainer.

Also, I've heard that to protect the knees, they should be covered anytime it's 55 and below. I'm always cold so I often wear tights plus leg warmers.
