Good hit Foggy, I have two developments on Sunday, one good and one not so good.

Good:-

Dear Robbie,

Your entry to the
Ironman 70.3 Ireland 2012 is confirmed

Seems strange booking a 70.3 b4 my first sprint but its not for another 6 months.

Bad:-

Cycled 34miles on Sunday 1hr 58min, Av. Cadence 80.

I had to go like the hammers to maintain an av. of 80, end result I woke up on Monday morning with my ITBand cracking over my left knee. First time this knee has been affected with the ITB but its not concerning me yet, rolled, stretched and iced this evening and it already feels greatly improved, going to get it striped tomorrow by the sports therapist.

Went for 1800m intervals this evening and it didn't annoy the band so I'll drop back on to my swimming for the rest of the week, its frustrating as I'm enoying every work out and don't feel like I'm over doing it but I know I shouldn't train as if I was racing.

Half marathon this weekend, will see how I feel the day b4 not going to risk it if it doesn't all feel loose by then.

Sweet.  I'm so jealous, race season around here doesn't get ramped up for another two months.

To respond to the question a bunch of pages back about races, I'm doing the West Point duathlon on April 29, the NY Tri Club Sprint Tri in June, and the NJ State Olympic in July. And MAYBE a HIM in August (somewhat dependent on having the funds, but this is my 21st birthday gift for myself).

Time to get aggressive with your training! How does your plan look over the next nine weeks?

Yeah, so my plan is to train through the duathlon with my focus on the Tri which is actually at the end of May. I have a recovery week planned after the race and no hard workouts in the week leading up to it so the race can replace them. I have 3 coached/planned by someone else workouts a week: a speed/hill simulation run on Monday, a killer leg strength session Wednesday and swimming shorter (25-100m) intervals Friday. I also do two more run workouts and 2 bike workouts on my own. Bike I've been alternating between hilly stuff and speed stuff each week and the second bike is a long ride. For running there's a long session on the weekend and a third run during the week that varies with what I did on Monday. Then swimming once a week outside of practice focusing on longer intervals (100-200M).

This past Monday we ran stairs for 30 minutes alternating every step and every other step on the way up. Today it was a bunch of body weight strength exercises with a focus on leg power. Lots of explosive movements and jumping stuff to simulate racing a little more.

OH, also my bike is with me in the city, so my rides are on an actual bike now! Super duper stoked about this.

Foggy! Thanks for the wetsuit idea - I will start trying some on, try to find one that fits, and then scour the internet for a used one. :D

Nice hockey pic with the little guy!

I, for one, am actually glad we have a little more time before races start cos I am NOT ready yet.

Rode with the family to my kid's soccer practice with the bike in the back and took off from there.  Gotta admit its not an ideal ride to take city streets at 5:00 in the afternoon.  Lots of waiting at red lights etc...but I gotta do what I gotta do to get my work in since I will not ride after the sun sets.

Ran into another guy on a bike on his way home from work and we rode together a little ways.  Eventually i had to split from him as he was commuting (going slower) and I really needed to pick up the pace to keep my speed respectable after losing all that time to the red lights and traffic.

Finally got to my old familiar country roads where I could really get after it without fear of traffic and/or being held up by red lights.  Felt good except when I was headed south as there was a killer head wind kicking.  I'm a big guy by all standards and even in the aero it can get pretty discouraging (with all the work and little speed to show for it).  But at least I won't be caught be suprise if there is wind on race day.

Finished up my light 14.5 mile training ride feeling pretty good overall.  Got a short run (4miles) tonight and then a brick on Thursday.  Just a week and a half until my first race!!!  Also stepped on the scales Monday to find it reading 234.0 even.  Down 16 lbs. from the first of the year and over halfway to my target weight of 220.  Time to buckle down now and grind it out as the second half I expect to be harder to shed than the first half.  I plan on being into the 220's by April fools day.

I just signed up for my first triathlon (well other than the little indoor one I did in December). Buckhead Border Challenge 7/15 Olympic distance. I am looking for a sprint distance close to home before this one but haven't decided on one yet.

Yikes! Now I have to swim in the Ohio river . . .

I had a good trainer ride yesterday.  Watched the 2007 Kona Ironman on youtube yesterday and was almost able to get 1.5 hours in.  Did a quick run on the treadmill to get the legs use to the transition and I feel good this morning.

I have been pondering with the idea on doing a half iron distance duathlon at the end of June.  My original plan was to do one the first weekend of September.

I have only done 1 sprint duathlon (last year) and plan on doing a couple sprint/olympic distances in May/June.

Anyone think this is too soon?  And maybe just wait for the September one??  I would definitely need to work on putting in the mileage as I am comfortable with the Olympic distance so far but definetely not Half iron distance.

Great read chaps, good to hear the momentum building.

Two positives for me today:

I hit my goal weight of 12lb 10stone this morning, first time I've been this light in about 15 years.

I swam 2520m yesterday evening without stopping in 52min, added 500m onto my pb and it felt effortless. I just focused on my hand entry and everything else fell into place.

Agreed

I got my bike a little bit too late and need to work more on the bike (more in everything in general!)

I will leave the half iron distance to September and next year try to get 2 or 3 half iron distances done.

The main part of summer I will focus on my half marathon in May and then a bunch of Sprint/Olympic distances.

Thanks Coach!

I think the end of the summer for the big (half) one is a great time for us first timers, give us plenty of smaller races to learn and build confidence which no doubt will lead to a more enjoyable experience come Sept.

Welldone to everyone who's signed up for their first race of the year, bring it on....
