I was thinking I was a little crazy for wanting to do an ultra trail marathon in a month but I've got nothing on you! In all seriousness, it sounds like a really great race to be a part of. Especially with it being the inaugural race and the fantastic scenery you'll be riding through!

Wow! That's really awesome! It's funny, there's a blogger I like to follow because he's crazy and likes to ride the steepest road races and centuries he can find, and he's been writing about this really challenging "Haute Route 2013" that he's signed up for with a team and that training for the race is starting now... LOL I figure it's the same one. I'm impressed. It sounds challenging but I'm sure you can do it, no doubt. If you are interested in the blog, it's steepclimbs.com. Can't wait to hear how your training and planning goes.

Anyone else have any good triathlon/running/biking/swimming blogs that they follow?

mmez - 2012-11-01 9:55 AM To be totally honest - the thing that scares me the most is the descents. I know the ascents will be tough, especially at 14% grade (and an estimated 18+% failure to make the cut-off rate), but I'm worried about the descents. I'm going to have to get some super brakes or something because I'll be giving them the death grip all the way down! And no, no place for oxygen deprivation, unfortunately.

Heh.  Descent shmee-scent.  That's the glory part of the ride.  I got a 10 minute lesson in how to descend a mountain on a bike.... when I got to the top of said mountain.  Mariah- you're going to be riding a piece of carefully constructed mechnical beauty that will carry you up and down and over again.  Common sense is built in, my friend.  I'm so excited for you!!!!!!!!!!1

Thank you all so much for all the support - seriously! I LOVE this this group and everyone seems to be in your cormer even when they look at your event and think to themselves "This chic is CRAZY", but outloud say "Way to go!", "You can do it!", "You got this!"...knowing good and well that I'm freaking WORRIED about not making the cut-off times and letting my team down.

Anyway, our team name is Chemical Shift - we're all in the Radiology field and Chemical Shift is a term used to describe the artefact caused by the frequency difference between fat and water on images we look at. We like it because it also has a lot of sub-texts for athletes and it just sounds pretty cool!

The event is September 2013, so I won't be doing any tri's this next year in an effort to focus primarily on my cycling and strength training as I know that I need to do a lot of core work.

If anyone has any tips for training, primarily for climbing, I would greatly appreciate it. I won't get to get outside for several months as it has already started snowing here, so most all of my training will be on the trainer.

Thanks again for all the support! I'll be sure to keep everyone updated!

I don't think you are crazy at all. You have plenty of time to train for it and you have a good base to build from after being "knighted" through your Sufferfest escapades. You'll make it and the sense of accomplishment will last a lifetime from this experience. Keep us posted about the training. As for tips on training, I got nothing.I guess pedal long, pedal often and just keep pedaling. You probably already know that

My initial suggestion is to spend a lot of time on the leg press.  You're going to use all those muscles to climb.  Oh, and ride a lot too LOL

Mariah!  That sounds so awesome!  I am very excited for you and I love your enthusiasm about taking on a new challenge!  We all know you can do it, but you are also probably gonna kick some knight butt while doing it.  : )

Hey All,

Ron (the owner of BT) is looking for member feedback about the mentor program for 2013.  I'm planning on continuing this group next year as it's exceeded my own expectations.  Is there any sort of enhancement to the program you'd like to see?  Content, site navigation, etc... nothing is off-limits.  He started a thread for the mentors, so let me know if there's something you'd like to see added for 2013.

Matt

In case anyone was looking for a free training program that allows you to customize your training plan or create your own, I found an easy to use one. The website is runningahead.com. I entered my half marathon training plan into the calendar, and then incorporated the BT winter cycling plan onto it to create what I'm going to be doing this winter. I thought I'd pass it along. Another runner referred me to it when Active changed their training log to become more "Facebook Friendly." So far I really like it and it has the feature to email my upcoming workouts. Needless to say I did not get my 3 mile run in tonight since I was doing data entry.

I haven't tried that yet but I'm technologically challenged. I just figured out how to upload my Garmin data here.

I was using cool running (by Active) since it was super easy to log workouts. The running ahead logs do let you upload your Garmin/heart rate data as well as create the training plan. That's about as far into it as I've gotten.

I found this online tonight while I was looking for information about fast twitch muscle fiber.  This is a really great outline of what all training programs attempt to accomplish based on exercise science principles:

And yet another resource I've found.  This one is super cool-> you can plan a route from A to B, anywhere in the world.  For my first challenge I'm going to swim from Oak Street Beach in Chicago to South Haven, MI.  Very few people have been able to swim the 76 miles in reality, I wonder how long it'll take me in the pool?

That's really weird, I posted here before I did on FB, now the post isn't here any more? But anyway, I did it - signed up for a Half Ironman! I'm nervous and excited, but really happy to have a new goal to work toward. It's the Carolina Half in Charlotte and it's not until Sept. 29 so plenty of time to train... I hope! I have a long way to go.

It's the first year for the event, and I thought it would be kinda neat  to be apart of something new. Also only 500 people allowed, which might be best for me. Most people here do the 3,000-plus-person Half in Augusta but that seemed a little overwhelming.

Here's the race: www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=2355

We're looking forward to motivating you to get to the start line.  The hardest part of the iron distance is surviving the training.  Once you make it to the start it's easy to finish!
