I loaded them all in the MP3 player for the ride today, and we will see which one goes best. (Safety alert! I do not ride with both ear buds in and volume is low so I can hear everything around me ) By the way, since I actually have a road bike now, I bought some bike shorts... is it just me or do you feel like you are wearing a giant diaper?

Veteran 189 Okiehoma | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED I may own bike shorts, but that does not mean I would wear just them. I wear my usual mesh athletic shorts over them. The bike shorts show off way too many unsightly bulges. Once you get used to riding with a giant Kotex between your legs though, they do help with some cushion for the tush. |

Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Here's my take on bike shorts: If someone sucks bad enough to notice you and your bike shorts its because they aren't fast enough to worry about their own race. Put the freakin' shorts on and be proud of yourself that you are out there... if someone notices, its because you are faster than them. So wear your shorts and worry about your race...

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Actually, talking about bike shorts and just wearing them. Yesterday I was walking from the bike shop to Domino's and I was wearing my Bib shorts and bike jersey. Some guy yells out of his window, "Nice Shorts!" I yelled, "Thanks". I guess it was the way the padding made my butt look round... Oh...and those "over shorts" are called courtesy shorts. I coined that phrase when a bunch of us were mountain biking and the guy we were with wouldn't leave the car when we pulled into a gas staion if we didn't all put on over-shorts. So I said, "You want us to put on some courtesy shorts?" and we called them that ever since! Edited by Marvarnett 2007-07-26 11:16 AM |

Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED LMAO! Courtesy shorts! That's awesome! The shorts are just part of the game... just like shoulder pads in football, cleats in soccer.... Anyone who gets on a bike for more than a few minutes realizes their utility. |

Master 2235 Pacific Northwest | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Hi gang....love the term 'courtesy shorts'....I will bet that takes off and becomes a regular term! Now...off the shorts topic for a sec.... My first tri is Saturday! I think I am all ready with my gear and all that, especially since I had to buy all new bike bag stuff after losing mine on my last ride. Even bought a race belt. Bike is tuned up. My questions: (some may be kind of goofy) --What do you do with your hair? I am not really used to swimming caps--do you put it in a ponytail and put that up in the cap and just leave it that way for the bike and run? --Food/eating: My plan is to leave home about 6:15 to get to the race at 7:15. My race isn't until 9:30, so I will have my usual smoothie and 2 cups of coffee, plus water, before I get there. Should I eat something closer to race time? Any ideas? I am thinking either a banana, or a clif bar or something like that. I have some gels but have not ever had any--so I am guessing during the bike leg isn't the time to have one for the first time. --Clothing: I have tri shorts and a tri top which I am planning to wear. Should I throw on a top over my tri top for the bike and run to be more modest, as the tri top shows a bit o'cleavage? Or just let it all hang out and celebrate the curves? --Bike gloves: Since it's a sprint I am not going to wear my gloves. Good choice? --Thurs/Fri: I was originally planning a ride or swim this morning but that didn't happen due to very sick kids (see log). What should I do between now and Saturday to be in top form? Weather is good, thankfully! I appreciate all your input! Can't believe this tri is here already. If I can just keep myself healthy, as my kids are little germ factories this week. |

Veteran 219 Russell, KS | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Once you get used to riding with a giant Kotex between your legs though, they do help with some cushion for the tush. If it feels like a diaper, you don't have nice bicycle pants. It's worth the $90 to get a good pair. You want a pair with 8 panels not 6. Ask someone to help you, and try a lot on. You'll be glad you did. Tri Advice for MedusaAnne From what I have read, you will be given a hat to wear in the water. It's not an option. You have to wear a swim hat. Two braids work well with a swim hat (or one). Pony tail is a pita to push up into the swim hat. I think they do it so they know what group you are in, as different groups get different colored swim hats. Also, screw the extra top when you ride. You'll be too hot and tired to care what other people think. You don't want an extra layer, believe me. The tri I was at last week had a lady who looked to be 250 and 5'4" tall. She had on a skin tight tri suit, and she got cheered, not jeered. The whole thing seems very positive to everyone who is there...body image doesn't matter...the fact you are showing up seems the main thing. (You shouldn't care what other people think of your body anyway. You're a righteous babe. Now say that to yourself in the mirror until you believe it because it is true.) Bicycle gloves. I'd wear mine just because I'm used to it. You might be crankin hard and really tearing up your hands going up a hill or something. Of course, I've only watched a tri. So you might want other's opinions on it. Edited by grnidone 2007-07-26 12:19 PM |

I am not really used to swimming caps--do you put it in a ponytail and put that up in the cap and just leave it that way for the bike and run? Clueless on this one. I use a swim cap and hair is not long enough for pony tail. I would not introduce anything new on race day, least from everything I have read around here. If you are good to go with what you usually eat breakfast followed by a workout, maybe just add a banana or clif bar, but the last couple of 5k races I have done, I was way too nervous to eat before the race.
--Clothing: I have tri shorts and a tri top which I am planning to wear. Should I throw on a top over my tri top for the bike and run to be more modest, as the tri top shows a bit o'cleavage? Or just let it all hang out and celebrate the curves? I say if you are comfortable with the tri suit, wear just it. If you like your curves, who cares what anyone else thinks! --Bike gloves: Since it's a sprint I am not going to wear my gloves. Good choice?[?QUOTE] I can't imagine doing just a training ride without my gloves. If you want to save transition time, tape them to your handle bars and put em on when you get going. - -Thurs/Fri: I was originally planning a ride or swim this morning but that didn't happen due to very sick kids (see log). What should I do between now and Saturday to be in top form? Weather is good, thankfully! I appreciate all your input! Can't believe this tri is here already. If I can just keep myself healthy, as my kids are little germ factories this week. Hope you do not get sick. If you want to do a short run or ride today, do so, but easy, easy pace just to stay loose. If I were you, I would do nothing tomorrow to be rested for Saturday, except maybe some stretching. Anything you do between now and then is not going to improve your race, but it could hurt it. We used to do an hour or two of partner assisted stretch sessions on the day before Physical Fitness tests in the military, and I always felt those were a huge help in performance. |
