Is that the stuff they give you when you first get your ears pierced?

Maybe.... But that might have been benzylalkonium chloride.

Both are disinfectants.

BUT I don't think you want to pour benzylalkonium chloride into your ears.... It would be really good at preventing Swimmer's ear, but I don't know that it would dry the ear canal the way that ispropyl alcohol would.

Ah, I know.... isopropyl alcohol is probably what they swab you with before giving you an injection. It's the stuff that feels "cool" when they put it on your arm.

The reason it feels cool is because it evaporates quickly. Which is exactly what you want, in order to get the water out of your ears after swimming.

kaqphin - 2007-12-14 9:14 PM Alcohol? How does that work?

Just drop a few drops into your ears. I usually tilt my head to the side for a while. When the alcohol dries it will dry up the water with it.
OR You drink a bunch of it and then water in your ears is the LEAST of your worries!!!

LMAO - actually a few months ago we had work drinks and i had a swim planned for that night...

I had some wine then went to the pool... it was umm... interesting...

At least you didn't pour the wine in your ears.

Don't order a sweet drink. All that sugar will make you sticky.

(Of course, if PAT is there, he might offer to lick it off you....)

(Did I really say that??? Hehe.)

kns57 - 2007-12-14 10:11 PM Dangerous to think while swimming.
Want to have a really good swim? Do math in your head while in the pool. I can pretty much think about anything while I swim. But NOT math. "3 x 3 = 9.... Wait. Am I on lap 9? I thought I was on 13...."
I'm a compulsive counter when I swim. I count my strokes. Count my breathing, count the laps, count the laps of the person next to me, count the minutes on the clock. LOL

You forgot -
1). Heart beats
2). number of breaths out, then in
3). number of air bubbles after exhale in water
4). number of water molecules in the pool
5). number of breaths out, then in, of person in the next lane
6). Same as 5), but for all in the pool
7). Same as 6), but include lifeguard(s)
There's more if you like?

I think Cat's punishment for not hitting 40K is a quick lash with a wet towel to her sunburned back - I know it would be healed by then but it still might sting a little bit.

Holy chickamole!  It seems overnight this thread has EXPLODED!!!

I am not a counter.  I'm a "whoosher".  Every stroke I am pretty much just saying in my head "whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" because that's what I feel like.  Either that, or I am counting the laps but with a whooshy feeling, like "FIFty, FIFty, FIFty".  Heh.

Today I am going for a 7 mile run and then a long session in the pool.  With the storm on Thursday and the pool only being open 3 days/week, this is my 2nd to last chance before going home!

have a good weekend!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Thursday - No pool because of storm and it is closed (it's a school).

Today - it's supposed to be open but it isn't.  It's deserted.  All the doors are locked.  There is NO ONE in the pool area which I can see by peeking in the window.  GAAAAAH!!!!!

This pool is totally weird.  I am not complaining because it's free to use, but it's totally weird, it's like a cooperation between the school and the city and it's completely disorganized, the hours are always changing, there are no lane lines (even though it's like, a real pool, 25 yds and everything), and when I go on the weekdays, there are kids swimming and playing volleyball all over the place, and I just swim way on the side to avoid them.  BUT, it's free, and you don't get that very much, so mostly I just deal with it.  But it's seriously messing with me!!!  I wonder if they're on winter break already or something?  I don't know.  sigh.

Fortunately, there is a 24hr fitness at home and if it comes down to it, i could get a day pass and just pound out the yardage after I get home.  it's not hard to do, but I need someplace to swim in order to do it!  Sigh.

But, never fear angels, I'll get in the yardage.  Let's face it, Cat could do all my remainder in like, a day, so I sure as hell better get 'er done!

You get to lap 50? I don't think I can count that high. Heh.

I have to concentrate around lap 13. Generally, if I lose count, it's right around there. At that point, I'm starting to warm up, and my mind starts to wander.... If I focus long enough to get to lap 17 or 18, I'm ok again after that.

I can't count much past 2 laps [for real] so I just click my watch every lap. Sometimes I even screw that up and click it on the WRONG side of the pool! Heh... guess I should probably pay more attention when I'm swimming Thanks, Timex!

My gym claims to always have 2 lanes open for laps. Except they have the "big steps" in one lane. That leaves about 1 1/2 lanes.

If you go while they're doing water aerobics, it's like having an OWS though. LOL

Oh no, I can't count to fifty, but I count in multiples of 25.  If i'm doing a 100, i'll think: 25, 25, 25, 25, until I get tot he wall, and then on the way back, it's 50, 50, 50, 50.  i find it harder to screw up that way, plus depending on which wall you're at you know if you messed up.  but I can have a hard time when I swim a 200 or something, i'll be on 175, and i won't remember if it's 125 or 175.  But, in the end, I click my watch and when I get home I use how long it took to figure out how far I actually went.

Ah, ok.

I count lengths of the pool. If I'm on an odd number, it means I'm going "up." Even numbers are coming back.

So, for example, I'm heading up the lane, I'd HAVE to be on 1,3,5,7, etc.... If I think "8", then I know I've miscounted.
