carrie639 - 2011-11-09 8:55 PM I have hit a new milestone tonight ... just tipped over 700 miles running.  It is actually amazing since I really only started running consistently about 15 months ago.

Congratulations!

I was thinking of you when I was running my marathon this past weekend.  I realized that in my build up to IMFL my longest run was about 13.5 miles (1:50 time wise).  Despite the "shortness" of my long run, I was able to run just over a 4 hour marathon.  I know that I am an n=1, but I really think there is something to be said for cumalative volume rather than the volume of the long run.

I think that as your cumulative volume gpoes up (which obviously it is) you're going to start seeing real improvements on the run.

Just because no one would bite on that comment in the IMTX thread, you're trying to get a response here?

(okay, I'll go work on my 'participant perspective' now)

Shaun and Kelly, you two crack me up. (in a good way)

1hr 10 minutes on the trainer with Soinervals Mental Toughness.  No ITBS issues, only when running.

So Jen, Scott, Kelly, and whoever else, do you do Yoga at home, or at the gym. Any vids you reccomend.  The 90 minute P90x yoga, was kind of boring.  hard, but not sure if the yoga thing is for me.

I take mine at the gym.  It's taught by a marathoner so we end up working and stretching out mostly muscles associated with endurance sports.  Kind of lucked into it really.  Also each yoga instructor has their own vibe to their classes.  You really have to find one that fits you.  I knew when the first words out of her mouth were "Lets get our Chi on y'all" I was in the right place.

I really think bike volume also helps for running.  As do long(ish) runs the day after a long bike.  I am an n=2 personally.

I think its really tough to start doing yoga with a video and yoga is definately not Tony Horton's strong point.

I think what you should try to do is drop in on a few classes and get and idea if (and what) you like, then you can get a video for an at home practice that caters better to you.  Most places have a beginner rate or a beginner card you can buy just to sample classes.  If you were west of the river, I wold suggest West Hartford Yoga.

Also, if you're interested I'd suggest this workshop:

http://www.westhartfordyoga.com/whywork/w_barnard.htm

Its involves power, yin and restorative and will give you a good view of three very different styles in one workshop.  Plus Kevin is a fantastic instructor (Shaun and I will be attending).

I do a Yoga for Triathletes dvd.  3 x 30 minute sequences.  There's no way I could squeeze in another gym session for yoga.  My husband would lose his shizzle if I were gone more than I already am for anything related to triathlon.  LOL

Just curious.....

Do you all swim year round?  I'm really finding it hard to dig up the motivation to get to the pool 2 x a week.  That was my goal for the off season, but now I'm thinking I didn't take enough time off.  I seem to be able to jump right back into it easily, so perhaps I would benefit from more time away??  I don't know.  The other part of me says that I need to keep working on form, and what better time to do it than the off season?

What do you all say on the matter?

Brian Lest's yoga videos are great.  they are among the best power yoga tapes on the market.

4x 3:30 on the treadmill at lunch, build from 7:15 to 6:15 pace.  ouchy.

I'm taking a break, but will jump back in soon.  There is a school of thought that you are better served to take a break from swimmng during the off season and pretty much start from "scratch" in the pre season.

So I'm thinking of getting my USAT level 1 certification this year (in either Charlotte or Fort Lauderdale).  I'm not sure how useful the Level 1 course is going to be, but it seems like a good thing to have.

Thoughts?

I thinking of doing the same, but it will probably have to wait a year.  I'd love to have the option to move in that direction with training if the opportunity presented itself.  BTW should finish up my NASM cert in a couple weeks.  Just need the CPR class.

Are you also getting your spin certification at the same?  Complete waste of time unless you intend to become a triathlon coach and feel a bogus certification will help you get clients.

I agree its a bogus certification but its a "checked box" and I eventually want to get into coaching (I would love to run a race management company and coach).  Unfortunately people think the certification means something.  Once I have it, its easy to maintain and if it fits into the schedule, its seems like I should just get it done.

Nope.

And there's really no way to do it because they check IDs so much during the check-in process.   Even if he were to go down, register in person and then transfer the athlete bracelet to you, if you're caught then you're both banned for life from WTC events.  I know the refund policy sucks but its not worth it.
