Closed a couple weeks ago.  I really don't have the dinero right now, but had an offer from someone who's injured to buy his spot for $300.  Would have been hard to pass up if kosher with the WTC.

Shaun,  great write up Bro.  While i don't want to say i enjoyed what you wrote, because clearly you did not, i want to say that i respect what you wrote.  Truth is the hardest thing to write, i think you nailed it.  thanks for the read.

Made me feel a little insensitive about what I'd written in response to Shaun's race report.  I respect what you wrote too, Shaun, and I'm sorry you had a hard day.  I just really like your sense of humor in your writing, even if you are writing about difficult things.  That's all.  Hope I didn't offend!

AS I told shaun yeasterday: he did really well given he was trained for a metric century (he lobbied for a 75 miler).  BUT, it still takes a lot of guts to finish when you know you are capable of better.

I'm with Kel.  It's too dangerous to attempt and if something happens you'll be banned from ever doing a WTC race again.

Instead, you can work on figuring out a way for us to patrol the bike and run courses during the race (e.g., Vespa scooter).

Scott and Shaun on scooters that could be trouble.  Perhaps one of you could be on the bike course on a moped to be my personal tech support.

OR we could hang out with my triathlon team and drink beer for 11 hours??  How the hell did I get roped into being sherpa #2 7 months out?

what's this 11 hours?  i wont be on the course for 11 hours.

So since there are a bunch of Yanks in here I figure this is a good place to ask.  What do y'all wear for cold weather running and riding?  I think I have the top half of my body covered, but was unsure as to bottoms.  Would a pair of tights cover my bases?  Should I also get leg warmers for riding?

Usually riding with only the top half of your body covered is a recipe for frost bite (and arrest...unless you're female).

If I run outside in the winter, I wear tights.  I get very cold, so I wear 2 pairs of gloves, too.  I will not ride outside in the snow and ice, so I can't help with that one, but I'd think the upper body and face would be most important.

Bike tights and leg warmers are for wimps!  Save your money for an IM entry!  =)

Seriously, I do bike when it's cold out (not snow) and what I do is wear bike shorts with some running tights over them.  It starts out cold, but you warm up fast.  Toes can get cold depending on the type of shoes you have, so I bought some cheap toe covers (LG for about $10) and they work fine with thick socks or two pair of regular socks.

Gloves are a must too, but I use running gloves biking too when it's cold.

Running: down to 40, i usually go with short sleeves and light gloves, maybe a hat or head band (kelly loves my headband look).  40-20: long sleeve shirt (add vest at about 30), sweats or tights, light gloves, hat.  20-0: long sleeve base layer, medium weight jacket, neck gator, hat medium weight gloves; sweats (add tights under sweats as it approaches 0).  Once you get under zero, just keep increasing the weight of the jacket, maybe wear googles.  the key is to keep skin covered. You wont be cold, but you need to worry about frost bite.

Biking: That's why we have trainers.

i think girl boobies are as much, if not more, susceptible to frostbite than boy boobies.  Also, and i am moving there like now, is it accessible for women, but not men, to walk around topless?  Wherever it is, I am going.

Just curious.....

Do you all swim year round?  I'm really finding it hard to dig up the motivation to get to the pool 2 x a week.  That was my goal for the off season, but now I'm thinking I didn't take enough time off.  I seem to be able to jump right back into it easily, so perhaps I would benefit from more time away??  I don't know.  The other part of me says that I need to keep working on form, and what better time to do it than the off season?

What do you all say on the matter?

I really enjoy swimming in the winter time. I feel like it tones me pretty well (for me anyway). And I'm such a new/bad swimmer more time is better than less.

I wear Under Armour winter tights down in to the high 20's-low 30's without too much trouble. If it's colder I throw on a pair of track pants over that. Last winter I ran in the teens at night like that without too much suffering.

So I'm in Houston a for a few days for a wedding (Diane's cousin's wedding). Visiting with my Dad and such (went to his radiation treatment with him yesterday...he's doing fine).

Weather here is outstanding right now. Just got in a from a run (3.8 miles) aorund the neighborhood. I forgot how easy it feels to run virtually at sea level after living the past 15+ years at over 5500 feet! AHHHH OXYGEN!!

Scott, I'd love to meet up with you but I'm afraid time is tight on this trip. We've already been giving yet another "to-do" item while here...Diane's parents want us all to go pose for family pics this evening at Sears. Oh joy.

Anyway, I'll check in as I can while away, but not as frequently. Everyone have a great weekend if I don't chat before then.

Just trying to catch up here.  Shaun, I also enjoyed the race report.  I think we all appreciate your honest report.  I think many people are afraid to admit "it was miserable" and rather tell others how great it was. In my eyes, anyone that completes an ironman is simply impressive.

Scott, I need to find a way on to that 11+ hour drinking team. My mother lives in Corpus Christie. Not that I'll be making the trip to TX, but how far is that from you? There is a new national tri series out there for 2012.  It was in the latest USAT Tri Magazine.  the name escpaes me, but pretty sure all events offer every distance at every race, other than IM distance. Pretty sure February, there is a race in Corpus Christie. I actually thought about doing the Olympic, for a second anyway. prob not going to happen.

The triathlon series you are thinking of is the HITS Triathlon Series.  Kel has some serious concerns about a first-year series that is offering literally every distance from super-sprint to IM on a single weekend.

I really hope they can pull it off.  It would be nice to have long course options around here other than WTC events.  I'm constantly nagging Rev3 on Twitter and FB to have a Texas based race.  I do have some friends doing this as a warm up race for IMTX.

Jeff, Corpus is 4 hours from me and 4.5 hours from IMTX.  Just about every major city is 3-4 hours from each other in this state.  The more the merrier @ 5 AM the morning of IMTX.

This also reminds me.  Kel and Shaun from what I understand the convenient hotel rooms to transition are full or about full.  Hope you've booked something.  I'd offer Reagan's trundel (sp?) but we're 45 minutes from transition.  Not sure that would work best for y'all.

We're staying about 10 miles from the race.  All the hotels at the race start wanted a pre-pay.  I'm not willing to do that.  Shaun isn't racing so he'll chauffeur Amy and I race morning (we should finish within 30 minutes of each other so bringing us home wont be a problem).

I'm sure it will run like a Swiss ocean liner..... 5 mile with 3 at tempo today. Gorgeous morning for a run.
