Race report is up from Sunday's half ironman
Half Vermont Journey

The race went great!  I wasn't blazing fast or anything, but I stuck to my plan/training, reached all my time goals and finished with a positive attitude.  I properly hydrated and fueled myself.  I also keep an even pace through the entire race, and did not try to chase down people passing me.  (actually caught up and passed some of them at the end of the run and bike)

It was a HUGE confidence boost for LPIM 2010.  Now I know what I put into training is what I will get on race day as long as I stick to my plan. :-

O.M.G. 12 lbs is such a HUGE difference!  I had a Denali for my first bike and I got a MUCH lighter C-dale and it made a 4 mph on average difference!

jford2309 - 2009-08-29 12:33 AM

But to give you an idea of why I am excited about this bike....it weighs 12lbs lighter than my current bike.  I am thinking I might be able to pick up some speed!

Sounds like a huge confidence boost. GREAT!!!  For IMLP, I've heard to bike, bike, bike.  So, keep up the good work training the plan and racing the plan!

Holy cow it has been a while since I have been on here.  I apologize.  After my season ending tri I went to Philly for a few days to visit family and then just got lazy when I got back.  I had another round of rib shots last Mon but luckily it only hurt for about 24hrs, so I went running the next night and something went wrong.  I have never had hip problems in my life.  I stretch before and after just about every workout.  Last Tue I stretched and then went for an EASY jog with my wife (trying out our new Garmin 310!)  and one step into the run I got a searing pain deep inside my left hip.  It shot all the way down my left leg.

I didn't say anything to my wife and pushed through some serious pain for about 3/4mi and then finally told her and had to stop.  We alternated walking and light jogging for another 2.75mi.  The pain level varied between a 2 to a 9 (out of 1-10 with 10 being painful).  I have no clue what happened.  I have been taking it easy and it has been getting better.  We've been getting some awesome weather (high of 63 today!!!  no kidding!!)  so I decided the hip was feeling better so I took her for a run.  It was acting up on occasion but no where near where it had been.  Pain never got over a 4.  Problem is I have a 10k run I am scheduled to do on Sun (it is a marathon relay so I can't let my friends down!).  I made it through a 5k today.  My wife is running a 5k leg in the same race and we agreed to switch legs if I just can't do the full 10k.

Very frustrating.  I seem to be very injury prone and I assume it is due to all the rough sports and the way i treated my body growing up.  I am schedule for a half marathon in 2.5 weeks, which I doubt I will be able to do.  And I have my last (hopefully) round of shots coming up next Mon.  I might need to take it very easy this winter and work on weightlifting and some other non-tri sports.

I hope everyone is doing well and I will catch up on your logs.    And happy fall!

Ahhhh, Tim! Hope you start getting better!  My blog is FULL of whines and complaints about physical pains and drains, so I hear you.  Taking time off helps in some situations, but in other situations-no pain=no gain.  Only a pro can tell you which is which (hence, why there are athletic trainers/physical therapists out there!).  Sounds like taking time off from running is an option, but you can move the running into the pool.  Think about yoga (my husband rolls his eyes when I suggest this, but honest! It's GOOD for you!) and DEF look into strength training.  Good luck!

I second the yoga- see if you can find a place that does something like power vinyasa- it's less spiritually and more physically focused, and is a great strength workout (esp for the core).

Sorry I haven't been around much!  I did my last tri of the season on Sun (RR is up)- I took 6 minutes off of last year's time, and was 12/48 in my AG!

I did the yoga once about 2yrs ago with my wife.  She goes regularly and keeps trying to get me to go.  I'll look into it, especially over the winter.   Thanks for the tip.  Ran yesterday with no hip pain at all (really weird).  Gonna try to do 6-7mi today and see how it feels.  This will give me 3 days to recover for the run on Sun if it acts up.

Thanks James, yeah it does the same for me!  I am still excited about it and it is BY FAR the best I have ever felt during and after a race like that.  I have noticed over the past 2yrs as my fitness level gets better I am less exhausted/tired/wornout after my races.  I got a little sore, but I felt so good I started a weight lifting program the very next day!  It is amazing how having a good race can really motivate you.  My goal now is to keep that fitness level up over the winter, which is always my weakest time of year when it comes to working out and eating right.

Tim, I have really been working on my stride and I have found that a shorter stride works a lot better for me. I am able to keep a faster pace and I am not nearly as soe legged after a run. I started a thread (and blogged about it) but many said that having your feet directly under your hips will help with joint pain and such, So I have really been paying attention to not overstriding.

Also I have gotten back on the Perfect Pushups (with my wife this time) and we are dong the "Around the World" core workout from BT.com. 15 exercises that all target the core!  It's great!

James, that is good to hear you got your wife involved!  And glad to see the shorter strides are working for you.  I went to that running theory this year and has been great for me.  I don't strike the ground with my heel and instead land midfoot and forefoot.  It took a lot of getting used to but has been working great for me.  I just gotta work on increasing my leg turnover rate (speeding up my legs).

And where is that core workout on here?  I can't seem to find it.

I have a friend that lives/works in Chicago...can you give me some of your likes/dislikes to help narrow things down?

Also, with the stride thing, I, too, have worked on where my foot strikes.  I used to be a terrible heel striker and now I land more midfoot.  I never had problems with PF with my natural stride, but I did have knee problems.  And with the new stride I've had problems with plantar fasciitis since last March, but no knee pain/swelling.

Sara, lets see...we will be staying in downtown and only have public transportation so can't go too far.  Looking for a good deep dish pizza and a good (but not too fancy) steak (we dont want to mess with packing dress clothes!).  We're pretty simple people who are just gonna explore downtown, wrigley field, lincoln park, the shoreline, and wanna find good local places to eat (we don't do sushi! ).  Thanks!

for steak i don't think you can go wrong with Gibsons (it's casual and in a good area to go out afterwards). Also you have to go get Italian beef (the other major food Chicago is known for). There are a few people that claim to be the best but there is this one hole in the wall place that is amazing the name escapes me though let me ask my old co-worker. For deep dish, as commercial as it sounds, Uno's is good, it's supposedly the original and the pizza taste different from the national chain. Bricks is also pretty good. Chicago has great food.. The last 3 yrs i've been going to Chicago what seems like once a month so i've tried pretty much everything.
