Steven, that's awesome on the tri bike. The fit is the "most" important part. As for the shoes, it just takes some time to toughen up your feet if you have soft feet. My wife tells me I have Fred Flintstone Feet so it has never been a problem for me to go sockless. It definitely saves time in a TA during the race. One tip, now that you've identified your friction spots (where the blisters occured) rub some "Body Glide" on the inside of the shoes where they contact your friction spots. This will help. Also, just continue short runs sockless while breaking them in and train with socks on the longer runs. I will run up to a half iron distance run sockless. Haven't done the IM yet, so I'm undecided on that.

Great suggestions, thanks. Trying to squeeze in both a ride and a swim this afternoon to free up the weekend with the fam. Should have learned to juggle when I was a kid.

I'm headed back home after three weeks on the road. I don't think I missed a workout during the entire trip, although not all of them happened in the order they were supposed to. Yesterday was probably the toughest... I did a 17 mile ride on the new bike in the late afternoon, then an 1850 yard swim 3 hours later. I though I felt pretty good until I got up at 5:15 to do my final run of the week before going to the airport. I was definitely moving slower than my previous runs this week. Home for the weekend and then back to Montreal next week.

My goal for this month is to swim 1000 yards without a rest. What's the longest set you swim in your workouts? One of my triathlete coworkers says if you can swim 15 minutes uninterrupted, you can cover a triathlon swim distance. True?

Glad you got the job you wanted. As you said, more money isn't always the way to go.

Today I did a strength workout then a bike ride of almost 19 miles. I think I have built up enough endurance for the Sprint Tri next month but I have not tried brick workouts yet so we will see. Juggling everything is definitely tough. Now I have the yearly yard chores on top of everything else but I will make it work.

I would love to see a pic of your new bike. I just saw a new Madone 5.9 in my LBS today that looked sweet.

Happy Easter to all!

Jay

Congratulations on the job!!! Does that mean less time training/working out??

I've been waiting to hear from Steven if you got your new tri bike yet and if so, what do you think of it?

We had snow this side of the mountain today. How was it on your side?

There was a little snow (about 4inches) that fell in the morning, but then it warmed up really nice!

Back on the road bike at home this morning.  I forgot how cold 50 degrees is at 15-20 mph in the dark.  At least my eyes stopped watering after the third mile or so.  Hands went numb shortly after that, so a good ride after all!  What's the most challenging workout you have scheduled for this week?  Mine will be the Saturday brick, currently scheduled for 35-40 miles on the bike followed by a 6 mile run.

Don't know what  is going on but I have had a low grade fever, joints on fire, headache and feel pounding in my head chest and back, weak feeling and shortness of breath.  Flu like symptoms without the flu.

A few years back a dr. tested me for Lupus and it came back inconclusive but he thought I had a mild form of Lupus...never concerned myself too much with it bc the only symptoms I ever had was some joint pain and maybe some swelling.  This week however was horrible!  Training was a bust!  I did get a 5K in on Sunday but it was not pretty for sure!

Left work early on Friday, I NEVER leave work sick, slept Saturday and felt weak but pretty good on Sunday.  Monday rolls around and not so much...maybe I am allergic to week days?  So has anyone had any experience with this disease?

No experience with it all... But sounds like one of those things you need to pay attention to quickly. I'm not a huge fan of going to the doctor, but real medical advice sounds crucial in this case.

Slightly rocky start to the training week. I got my long run in on Sunday, and my first ride Monday morning, but was exhausted last night. Chose to go to be early and skip the strength training session. Three nights in a row of 5-6hours of sleep did me in.

So sorry to hear that your are feeling so bad.  I hope as well that it's not Lupus because that's not good .  My sister was feeling really bad a couple years ago and her doctor tested her for Lupus and thankfully it came back negative.  Let's just hope and pray that it's just a really bad cold/flu!

3 mile run before my flight this morning and 1000 yard swim in the 15 yard hotel pool after checking in tonight. Just need to figure out how to work the strength training I missed last night into the remainder of the week...

That swim's gotta be brutal in such a small pool :-)

Oh, yeah. It was so good to be in a full sized pool last week. But, I've got to get the endurance up there, so no choice.

Endocrinologist said, "Eh, you may have a bug."  So a bug it is.  Still struggling though and hopefully will feel back to my old self soon.

Only a risk if you have more skill and technique than me! Doing a full one hour workout in the pool tonight if it empties out in time. Hope to get in 2000+ yards.

More power to ya!! I know i couldn't swim in that size of a pool for an hour.

On a side note, my run times and distances are getting better and longer.  Earlier this week I ran 7.6 miles in a little over an hour and felt great afterwards and the next day!  As much as I dislike running, I'm finding that it's becoming therapeutic and somewhat relaxing.

I know what you mean by therapeutic. I am finding that more with the cycling at this point but running isn't far behind. I think I am officially addicted to this triathlon thing!

Cynthia, you have probably been going backwards because the recent string of health issues. Get well and everything will fall back in place soon.

Steven, I don't think I would even attempt to swim in the hotel pool. More power to you!

Jay, I hate to tell you but the addiction thing probably started a long time back and you are just now realizing it. DOn't youhave your first race coming up very soon?

Brian, Man that is a great run. Strong pacing.  It is good to zone out and just go. That is what I love about both running and cycling, I can basically put my mind on autopilot if I want.

Here in my area we had our first duathlon of the multisport season on Sunday. I love to do it because it is a hard core sprint (2 mi run, 16 mi bike, 2 mi run), but unfortunately one of my girls had a soccer tournament.  But at least it is officially tri season! On another note, I have been a little nervous to run long after recovering from my calf injury, but yesterday I had some time and I was able to knock out a 9.5 mile run. Felt good and no pain. Lost a little pacing over each third of the run, but I never felt bad. It was good to be able to go a little longer.

What else is coming up for everyone?

My first tri April 12 (Annapolis Tri Rock) and I am pretty excited. It is a Sprint with only 500 yard swim, 12 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. I am more concerned with the logistics than I am with finishing. Even though the water may be a little chilly, I am thinking of not using the wetsuit since we are talking about a 10 minute swim. It would probably take longer to get the wetsuit off than the time and energy required for utilizing the wetsuit. Having said that, I hate cold water! What do you think?

I also have not had experience with transitions but I have a local triathlon group here that should be able to help with that.

Congrats on the 9.5 mile run. It is going to take me some time to get to where I am able to run that far with any speed. So far I am averaging about 8:30/mile regardless of the length of my runs. I tend to start slow to get through the minor aches until I get in a groove. I guess it takes time and I need to be patient.

Jay

Jay, I assume you meant the 21st. That is very exciting! A couple of things: if you have a wetsuit or access, use it. It doesn't take near as long to strip off than it does to put it on. It will keep your core temp up during the rest of the race and it's faster. If you haven't actually practiced your transitions, make that part of your training 2 or 3 times this week. Lay out everything in your driveway or garage or in the parking lot of the gym wear you swim. Go through everything from startt of race into water, leaving water into T1, out of T1 onto bike, into T2, out of T2 onto the run. Do it a few times each session. It will be worth it. Let me know if you have any other questions.
