Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey everybody, Mav, you are amazing! WTG on your race that was awesome! That's some improvement over last year. If I could ever make a podium appearance, I would retire happy. You ROCK! RUN: I'm trying to get back into the running more but when I start putting in the miles my ITB symptoms flare up, so I'm going slow and walking quite a bit - that is hard for me to do. But I know its what I NEED to do, just take it easy. Waiting for my new shoes to arrive, should be here today (cross fingers). BIKE: When I went on the (epic) inaugural ride on Scar I had quite a bit of soreness in the hamstring area. I believe I know why. Its the lower angle (between back and leg) that I am now riding on the road bike compared to my mtn bike. Causing my hamstrings to revolt a little. My ride on Sat. hurt also, but not nearly as much. So I'm hoping with some extra stretching and more time in the saddle, it will all be good. SWIM: Drilled and drilled and drilled last week - three trips to the pool. I can see some improvement but am still struggling for balance on my left side. Right side is good but I sink on my left for some reason. Its getting better the more I practice my TI drills. I am going to drill drill drill until I get it. Going for ease, ease, ease. I can tell that I am getting better, but very slowly. Working on overcoming a lot of inflexibility in the shoulders too. That's a tough one, but also seeing some slow improvements. I didn't realize the strain swimming puts on the shoulder, and especially the rotator cuff. I saw a doctor last year who put me into physical therapy to try to prevent having shoulder surgery. Was good until I started swimming. At least I know the exercises that I need to do to strengthen the joint. Just takes a while, and I am impatient. BTW, anyone ever use FistGloves (tm) in the pool? I've heard good things about them, and am thinking about getting some. Flipper, you're going to do great in the YTRI on the 24th, I just know it. Think happy thoughts! Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Sorry about all the nonsense. No more dumb posts like that. Thanks for all the congrats. Leston, I've seen fist gloves but have never used them. I hear you on the shoulder discomfort. I would suggest you learn to bilateral breathe if you are not already doing it. It really does make a difference in shoulder discomfort. Be careful with using paddles when yoour shoulders are hurting. Bryan are you tapering yet for your oly???? Sticka how are those hot tub transitions going??? Dan you must be training really hard******smile****** |

Juantita - envelope is in the mail to you now. Dan - where are you ????? Leston - hope those shoes make the difference for you. I know how aggravating (and worrisome) ITB issues can be. Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. I am getting excited... not so scared now, mostly excited. Leston! Thank you! And ouch, hon. Bless your heart, and you just keep on keepin' on. Walking is good too! WTG! Like Sticka, I hope those news shoes make a big difference! Shoulder problems here too on the left side because I breathe to the right. (I even gave up my shoulder machine on the gym floor to keep from aggravating it.) But 2 things have made it better. 1. I focus on the "reach and pivot" like Bryan told us too. I find I'm taking a bit of the work load off my shoulder joint when I pivot my body. 2. I lock my elbow as my arm starts back in the water. If I concentrate on making the motion a "push" instead of a pull, it seems to help my shoulder. I should alternate breathe like Marianne suggests, but I still have balance problems too, (I'm beginning to think I weigh more on one side then the other, lol) and can't get my mouth above the water line on my left side - yet. I haven't given up. You're biking is incredible! Go Leston! Marianne those are NOT dumb posts, and you are NOT tech stupid. INEXPERIENCED. There's a difference! Grr. And for all we know, there may be some incompatibility with your system, configuration or software that is keeping the photos from showing here. Meanwhile, the pics are WONDERFUL! Thank you! You look AWESOME, girl! Thank you, Peter! I'm so intrigued! I'll be pestering hubby every day until it comes in! *ear to ear smile*
Ok, I'm tapering this week with higher intensity, and lower distance. Is that right? Last week, I rode every day. This week I'll alternate between running and biking. And next week, I have no clue what to do, lol. (We travel Friday.) Someone give me a schedule? Dang, I'm helpless sometimes... Miss you, Dan! I can't wait to hear how your week is going, Bryan! GO BRYAN!

Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I ran (slow jogged) a 5K today outside with no walking! Sounds so pitiful next to this group's awesome running ability, but I'm pumped. *grin* Note: I did have to come to a complete stop once when the 3 legged dog came out to confront Spazz, and I got tangled up in her leash. Aggressive dog, that 3 legged mutt. But I guess he's "compensating", poor thing. The stress of fighting him off though, kept me from resting, so I don't think the stop hurt me much. sTRIve on Turtles! |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Well it took me 15 minutes to catch-up on the posts and I will say this one more time TURTLES ROCK!!!!!! This group is amazing. Mav: Loved the recap and pictures (nice job FBP) (wow you have a nice guns to go with that nice behind that guys like to honk at! :^) .... Your times are amazing. I hope to be like you!!! FBP: GREAT time. A Half is still waaaaaay out-of-my-league for now! Very impressed. Leston: Awesome ride and training. Keep up the great work. I have been continuing to train in the am although I missed 3 days at the end of last week (my mother-in-law went into the hospital; son came home for college for the weekend, and we spent a night downtown Detroit - darn life keeps getting in the way!). I had my WORST day swimming in months this morning. They were re-finishing the gym floor next door to the pool and the fumes were very heavy in the pool area. It didn't seem to bother many of the other swimmers, but I had a hard time catching my breath! I could only swim 450m and had to stop (my last 3 trips to the pool I was able to do 750m!). I did 2 x 100m sprints (for me anyway a sprint is 1 minute per 50m) and then called it quits. I hope to do more later. I have also been shopping for bikes and are looking at these three: 1. Lemond Alpe D'Huez: http://www.lemondbikes.com/bikes/road_racing/carbon_aluminum_spine/... 2. Specialize Transition (has Tri aerobars already added): http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2007&spid=22297 3. Giant OCR 1: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/road/1243/29268/ The Giant is the least expensive, Lemond the most and Specialized inbetween. The Lemond is actually $450 off msp with a close-out at the local Trek store! I have been to three local bike stores to get these recommendations. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thank you all for your inspiration and wisdom. My wife, daughter and I signed-up for a "Save the Manatee" 5K run this Saturday. I am hoping my heal will hold out and I can stay within 8 minutes of my daughter! (Why they have a Save the Manatee race in Detroit, I will never know, but it is close to our house and for $20 we get a T-Shirt and my first 5K experience. sTRIve on Turtles. Dan ps Mav, you missed a good game from your standpoint last Thursday. Sox certainly kicked the Tiger's a$$ - although everyone else, other than the Yankee's, have also done that this year!!!! We would have had fun, but my son and daughter enjoyed the game in your place! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Well, I got the new shoes today (same style, same size, just a new look this year), and I ran for about 20 minutes this morning on the treadmill just to try them out. I can definitely tell that they are firmer than my old ones. More support means less stress on the ITB, I'm hoping. I'll gradually ramp the mileage back up and see how it goes. My shoulders are slowly starting to feel better. I am not doing as many laps, but really working on balance and feel. That's helping to rest the shoulders some. This morning I was pretty excited because I am starting to feel like I can finally stretch my (right) arm all the way out in front of me. It felt absolutely great - balanced and sleek! The left arm is a bit more inflexible, but also improving. I started to feel more balance and comfort on the left side after drilling for 20 minutes or so. I think the main issue is finding "vertical" on my left side, and also kicking better. I want to go to the pool again tomorrow to keep the feel going for me. Since y'all asked, I am breathing on both sides, after every 3 strokes. That's what I've been doing since the start, and I can tell that it is a lot easier for me now than when I started 4 months ago. Mav, thanks for the pics. What a marvelous looking day, and a beautiful setting. Good on ya! Flipper - I can identify with the feeling of weighing more on the left side - LOL! Great description! I'm no expert for sure, but I would look at how my forward arm (the right arm when breathing on the left side) position is different from one side to the other when getting a breath. Also it has helped me to focus on keeping my chin in close to my shoulder so I'm not 'reaching' for the air, but turning instead. Maybe someday I'll swim half as well as you do... Dan - thanks for the update. You are a swimmer, man. WTG! All nice bikes. Have you ridden each of them? The Giant has a more upright position, which can be good if you aren't used to riding bent over (like me). Keep up the good work everyone. Thanks for being here :). sTRive! --Leston Edited by Leston12 2008-05-13 5:36 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Left side heavy swimmers - I can GUARANTEE you that you are tensing when you roll to that side and thinking of sinking at least somewhere in your brain....both of which end in one outcome....you sink....balance - balance - balance.......Here's another tip: I think you are positioning yourself differently on both sides, the arm position is one thing, the 2beat kick to rotate your body may be another, how much of your weight you "push" into your armpit, how elongated your "vessel is, and a couple of others but I would also pay particular attention to neck tension as you are preparing to "race" for air....I know when I breathe on the left my rhythm gets out of whack slightly sometimes. Mav - what great pics - you rock! FBP - Sticks - you are such a picture geek....where are the half pics? Flipper - you keep on truckin girl....this is not a site to compare or compete...this is a site of support and friendship which I think we are all doing quite well....so no apologies, no excuses, no other stuff like that....we are all where we are - and that is a MUCH better place than yesterday much less last year. Leston - take care of the shoulder - NO paddles until it is fully recovered - and then my opinion is NO paddles ever....I think they are typically used to support your local orthopedic shoulder doc.....that said I like fistgloves....for those who haven't seen them, they hold your hands in a fist. I got a pair at the TI clinic I did last year, otherwise I wouldn't have them - I figure I can hold my own hands in fists....here's a strong drill - relaxedly (is that a word) close your fists and swim a 25...this will be slow and you will definitely feel the "catch" on your forearm. Another good relaxing drill is to open your hands and relax the fingers...keeping your fingers smashed together does not increase the surface area AT ALL. Leston - bike - more time in the saddle will make your hammy sing with glee.....it is just a different firing requirement due to the new angle I think. New bikes New bikes New bikes - no issue there Dan with any of those...ride them all and make your decision on comfort first.....you are going to spend a lot of time riding her so she needs to welcome you. That said, price is always a factor and must be considered in there too but don't go more expensive just because you can...get the comfortable lady. Of course we all know you must also get a fast color....Mav remains the colorist here and is the FINAL WORD on color speed.... It is so good to read where you all are today.....if you want to have some fun, spend about 15 minutes and go back and read page 1 and 2 of our posts....and remember the journey and how far you have come....can you estimate the miles you have covered since then? |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Flipper - sorry I forgot....tapering is a reduction in both intensity and duration....the workouts during your taper are intended just to get the muscles firing and burn off a little excess anxiety. Don't overdo it next week.....you can only add to your finish time next week....don't do it....(you will really want to work out harder to be sure you can "make it" - don't do it) I think next week will be a good taper plan for your sprint....your last long workout should be Sunday.....take Monday off....Tues - swim, wed - bike - thurs - short run like 15-20 minutes....Fri travel...SAT - have a blast...become a triathlete. You can change what you do on any day except SAT....smile. Go Flipper Go |

I missed your sense of humor. Love the choices of the bikes and I couldn't agree more with Bryan about riding and feeling the comfort. Be sure to get a good fit. My LBS measured me and then had me come back 2 days later and I rode outdoors (in freezing temps) all 3 bikes. There is a large hill behind the shop that I had to climb... my choice was pretty easy after that. I LOVE MY BIKE. Good Luck on your 5 K. I totally expect finish line pics!!!!! Pay backs a ........ Juanita , thanks for the kind words on my tech abilities... I know my limitations! I am getting very excited for you and Bryan and your upcoming races. Hey Sticka where are your half mary pics??????? Leston so glad you got new running shoes. I write the date on the instep of mine with perm marker to remember when I bought them. I retire them every 4-5 months, some places I have read that you should replace every 250 miles. I think it really depends on how much you run and what distances you are training for. You ARE conquering the swim. Just think back to your first day at the pool and you will see your improvement. Ya'll make me laugh! |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! As has happened to some of you before I know, I typed a lengthy post last night and when I hit the Submit button the connection to the site had timed out - aaarrrggghhhhh !!! On the upside, there have been a couple of more posts since then so gives me more to write about Last night Jill and I went to a potluck supper with the group that did the Half Marathon clinic together. They started with 22, had 15 still involved by the end of the 20 weeks and 14 ran and finished the Half on Sunday. For all but 2 it was their first ever Half. One person was sick so she is aiming for a Half later in the year. Besides the great food (yum yum!!) it was really fun to listen to them all trading "war stories" about the run and to a person they are hooked now and thinking about other Halfs and a couple are starting into the Full Marathon clinic now aiming to do one sometime in the fall. Dan - great to have you back and posting! Sweet looking rides. I think Sebastian would be jealous if I oohed and aahed too much though. He has been penned up in the garage for a week now as I focussed on preparation for the Half - hope to get him out for a short jaunt tonight after work. BTW, hilarious about the Save The Manatee race. Didn't reaalize they were native to the Detroit River and Lake St Clair BMan - great comments about how far we've all come and I agree 100% with your taper advice for Flipper. Juantita, there's a saying that "the hay is in the barn" a couple weeks before race date. Taper period is to rest and rejuvenate not for last minute higher intensity training. Mav - great idea about writing the date on your shoes. I am always trying to remember when I took them out of the box and started to use them. Has anyone tried the one-footed pedalling that Coach Annie mentioned in our coaching session? I tried it the other day and immediately noticed what it felt like to pull up and over in the pedal stroke as opposed to just pushing down. Hope I can transfer that feeling now to two-footed pedalling. Later y'all, Sticka - a sTRIving fool! Edited by FreddyBeachPete 2008-05-14 7:51 AM |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Mav, thanks for the tip for recording date of purchase on the shoes. I didn't realize how fast they wear out. Too bad they cost $100 rather than $20 or $30 . FBP, I've done quite a bit of one-legged pedaling, especially on my mtb. Its a training tip I learned about in a book by Ned Overend (kind of an ironic name for a mtb racer, don't you think - but he's a legend!). Its a great exercise to train your legs how to pedal in circles. I find that I still have to think about doing it though, to be very efficient. Nice pics from your half marathon - nice job on that race! BMan, I've completely bought into Terry Laughlin's advice regarding swimming gear. I tried a friend's paddles once, but didn't think they helped after I took them off. Kickboards just aggravate my shoulder and back. Haven't tried fins. But I find that after about 5-10 minutes of TI drills I start to "feel" my kick better - how to move the water with my legs and feet without working too hard. Probably has to do with loosening up my ankles. Don't think fins will do more for me than that as a learning device. And a pull buoy - I've used this more than any of the other - but it does throw off my balance. Terry's point is to focus on balance and position without these devices, and that seems to be working for me. The one device he recommends is the gloves. But I'll try the 'natural' approach first. Keep on sTRIvin! --Leston |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Leston, I'm with you on all the swimming "paraphenalia". I don't like it. Fins cause me to cramp and paddles make my shoulders ache(whine , whine...). I find that the way I have improved is to practice my form and put in the time /laps. When I first started, I went everyday. As I improved and was able to go greater lengths , I went less often but greater distance. I now go three to four times/week. I just decided to stop going to master class. I did this because there is too much time being spent on drills and I need to practice distance. I need to be able to swim a mile, so I am now doing distance each workout. I will practice my bilateral breathing, I will change my pace, do fingertip drag, catch up... but I do NOT stop. This way I get in my distance and practice my drills. I guess what I am trying to say is ...do what works for you. Hey Dan....pick good colors for your bike. Orange, red, black, silver, dark blue are all FAST colors. Try to avoid pink, lt green, pale blue....you get the picture.I'm telling you color makes a difference. This weekends race... black and silver bike, red helmet, silver/gray tri suit, silver bathing cap (under stupid pink race cap) and sneakers actually have a silver stripe. NO KIDDING. LOL !!!!! Juanita... are ya doing OK???? I wish I was giong to be there to watch you cross that line. I did a big brick today. I went up huge hills and felt pretty good. 24 days and counting. |

IMHO fast colours relate only to bikes and not to clothes Flipper so no worry about the pink top. Just make sure you look colour-coordinated Bryan mentioned in one of his recent posts that we should all consider our progress to date. Well, yesterday I went to the pool for a brief swim before going to a departmental luncheon. My brief swim was 750m continuous - 10 times what I could've done back in January Special weekend ahead. Monday is a holiday (Victoria Day) and my two brothers are driving from Ottawa to meet me and son Chris at our family cottage in Prince Edward Island. PEI is 3 hours drive from Freddy Beach, 12 hours from Ottawa. We call this the "May Run" and it's boys only. We open up the cottage for the season, do some work on it, watch the hockey playoffs on TV, etc. I may get a couple of runs in but sadly Sebastian has to stay here at home due to space restrictions. Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! IMO YOU CAN DO IT..... However I would strongly reccomend you do that Open water swim prior to the race. Swim parallel to the shore if you are "alone" so that you can stand if necessary. Bring your Hubby along for moral support and to watch you so you are not alone. I dont know if this is a lifeguarded area, but I looked at the race map and I think you will be fine.
