Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Dragonflyer - 2010-01-31 6:45 AM It seems like everyone is taking the weekend off?? Or maybe I am the only "Nut" that is up at 5am doing a quick work out before heading off to work! Am not trying to come off as Crazed but am finding a nice routine that works very well for myself. Am finding out that the more I work out and see results the more you are willing to continue the early mornings. The season is getting here very quickly and being prepared is what is going to make a difference in your performance. Plus I really like showing up my boys--gives them some extra drive to get out there and do their very best!! I my have some aches and pains in the morning and perhaps walk with a some sore calfs--but would never let them see it--after all, I am DAD!!! and that is one of the most important titles you"ll ever have--besides MOM (of course) I have actually worked out more the past 2 day than anytime in the past 8 months. Haven't made it at 5am yet, but I am planning on it when the sun is up. Now that I am back in it. I do find that I need to go more. Everything improved this week, and I am starting to get in my old routines. I don't know if it's the new diet or that my body is remembering how to work out, but I felt really good this week. My kids saw me on the trainer yesterday and asked what I was doing. My kids aren't old enough to show up yet. I can't wait though.

Regular 71 Melbourne | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi all, well I stepped up and actually did my first race yesterday. I sure learnt alot. In particular that I think I need a much higher training volume to do this level of triathlon. But I finished, and I wasn't last overall and I didn't hurt myself. So I guess that's all positive. The day was really hot- around 100 degrees with a 25mph wind that was a killer on the bike and made the water pretty choppy. For me though, the biggest disappointment was that about 150m into the swim, I started huffing and puffing like a hot dog- I think it was hyperventilation- and had to breaststroke most of the way- puzzled about what caused it- nerves? I didn't feel nervous prior to the race, oh well. Bike was hard, but did ok- the run was a killer and I ended up walking alot of it. Final time 1:56 - I am not happy with that at all! Key learnings- spend more time training on bike and run, don't freak out at the start, take out inserts from my shoes to ease transitions. But mainly, just train more! Thanks for all the inspires and wishes over the last couple of days. Its been great to have you all on my side. I promise, I'll do better next time!!! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Now that we are a month into the new year, I wanted to check in and see how they are doing. Did everyone have a good month? Are there things that you want to do better? Differently? How do you feel the group is going? Do I need to focus on more things? Just wanted to get your feedback. Personally, I picked it up the last couple of weeks and finally feel like I am in a good routine. Looking forward to building my base up this month and starting my HIM training at the end of the month. As far as the group go, I think I am lucky to have an active, very responsive and supportive group. I am looking forward to the next couple of months as people's training really starts to kick in. Thanks for being a great group. |

Member 124 Salem | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hello. I'm writing in this thread because, obviously, im looking to join a mentor program. I see that this group is full, but was wondering if someone drops, or is inactive, maybe I could get in...? Im interested in this group because of the mentor. I am 35, so of comparable age, and am going to be in the Boston area until June or July. Having someone locally, to maybe share a run or bike with on occassion, would be amazing. I'm also going to be doing the same IM as Boston Beginner. I've been living in Arizona for the last few years, and am just home (im from MA originally) for a few months, before heading back for good. I'm looking forward to 'home court advantage' and could even supply tips about the course and updates as race day gets closer. I've never done a triathlon before, but have run, on and off, my whole life. 7 weeks ago I made up my mind to do the Tempe Iron Man, and I'm proud to say I've already put forth a considerable effort. I'm down 15lbs since my start, and my body is starting to develop the base I'm going to need to pull of this endeavor. Ive done plenty of homework, already, but it would be of great benefit having someone check in on me from time to time and to bounce ideas/concerns off of. Let me know, please! |

Let me say it here, Congadualtions, you are a TRIATHLETE!! Sounds good right? Only Chrissy Wellington seems to be able to come out and be the best from the beginning. We all start somewhere, and only one person is dead last in any tri. Always remember: A finish is better than DFL (Dead F***** Last) , DFL is always better than DNS( DId not Start) and DNS almost always beets DNGOTFC (Did not get off the F***** Couch. You rock just because you Tri and are willing to do something to better yourself Looking forward to full race reports from all of our races to read and be able to look back at. I can not under etimate the value of Race Reports. Having been racing since 05 ( I think), it is great to look back at training and results. RR have there own value to help evaluate weaknesses and strenghts in you game plan. Things like going out too hard, poor hydration/nutrition, wrong gear, etc can come up in a race. The reports keep them fresh, especialy if you keep going to the same race year after year. For what it is worth, here is the link to my race page http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/races-list.asp
Keep up all the good work everyone!! |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Welcome Nick! Maree and Melissa Congratulations on the races. Maree - I looked at it as I beat everyone that stayed home that day, (there's like 100,000+ people) so that made me FOP!! Seriously though, it's hard to not get discouraged as a beginner sometimes. I just try to remember that I can do so much more than I could a year ago. Oh, and my incision split open, so I have to pretty much do nothing for a week. I love starting over again and again. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hello All Yes, today is my birthday--yahoo but more importantly it's the start of a 3 week vacation for my wife and I. Am taking off to Boston on Weds (yes, I know--great city--I hear it all the time from my daughter who lives there-Back-Bay) Flying out early Thurs morning from Logan to head to the island of Culebra PR. Am not sure if I will be logging my info in as am not sure of the internet where we are staying. But will be taking my Triathlete's Training Diary (they are great if anyone has the need-it was suggested to me by a Tri coach) Looking forward to the get-away and especially the warm temps and sun. It's going to be a good chance for me to really jump start my training-especially open water swimming and running. As the roads around our house are made to order for some nice early morning runs. So if I don't stay in contact--everyone keep up your training, our group is really doing Great!! Hope everyone stays on track and remember to keep those logs up to date-makes for some good reading and inspiration. (sorry Josh-I sound like the leader) but really the group inspiration is what might make a difference in all of our training--continue to reach for your goals!! |
