That's a nice goal but would like to put some teeth in it so to speak! LOL! As a general ballpark number, how often do you eat out each week? When I told my significant other of my resolution, my significant other wanted to know if we order and bring it home, is that still eating out!! Thanks! I don't know what's normal, but we eat out as a family 2x a week, usually on Friday and Saturday evenings. I also go out for lunch with my colleagues about 1x a week. The rest of the time I brown bag it and/or cook. (We consider take out eating out, but that's just us.) We do not eat "out" as in sit in a restaurant that much........ but take out? Ugh. Yes. Pizza. I DESPISE take out pizza. Blech. But since I am the only one who cooks if I am working or for some reason not able to cook its pizza. Disgusting. We probably have it once every ten days or so. And usually I refuse to eat it.....but will make myself something later. I wish SOMEONE in my house would step up to the plate and cook when I am not able to............. |

Hate it. Other than that, training is going well, except I didn't make the trainer this morning because I was up too late last night watching my Hawkeye team win the Orange Bowl. Whoo whoo! ![]() Congrats on getting to the pool!! Yes. Swimming is gross. I agree. Blech. I must go and drag my azz to Masters now......which I know will suck big time because my asthma is tormenting me and it will be HORRID to try and swim. But I will anyway. Ugh. ![]() |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good news Marianne - glad to hear your feeling better. I made it to the pool today as well - it was crowded but I ended up with a lane to myself after the first 500 yards. Swam 2100 yards and felt much better than I did on Monday. I know I wont get any sympathy from this group, but this cold weather is brutal. High 20s - low 30s every morning when I wake up!! I've never run/biked in anything but shorts in my life but had to pick up a pair of tights yesterday at Target for tomorrow am. Longest stretch of cold weather I can ever remember having in FL and I've lived here my entire life I'm passing that recipe on the my wife - sounds tasty and I'm sure our kids will like it!! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for everyone's advice! I wholeheartedly agree that biking is the key. After training for Ragbrai for 6 mos, I started running and it was soooo much easier. Marianne--glad to hear you are feeling better!! I am trying a new crockpot breakfast recipe. Will post if it is good. Definitely going to try the one that was just posted. Sounds yummy! |

I was supposed to go to Vero Beach...OWS in the 30's is even a little cold for this New Englander!!!! |

My son had soccer paractice tonight at 5:30 and after the sun went down the temp went with it. Another round of COOOLD weather comes tonight/tomorrow and rain is predicted for his game on Sat am!! Not a week to visit FL. Question for all the cold weather pros in this group - what do you wear on the bike in cold conditions. I can handle running in cold weather, but my hands and face felt extremely numb Monday am and I had to stop after 3 miles. Regular gloves sold at bike shops around here are not intended for cold weather. I guess this is the reason you all have trainers in the garage/house??? |

Regular gloves sold at bike shops around here are not intended for cold weather. I guess this is the reason you all have trainers in the garage/house??? What to wear for cold weather cycling... good question. This depends a lot on the temperature and your tolerance for cold. Here's what I wear: Temperatures between 5 & 10*C (41-50*F)... regular socks, leg warmers, cycling shorts, base layer shirt (long or short), cycling shirt, wind breaker and maybe arm warmers (depends on wind/sun), long finger fall gloves. Temperatures between 0 & 5*C (32-41*F)... cycling shorts, woolen socks, tights, base layer shirt long sleeve, cycling shirt, arm warmers, winter cycling jacket, full finger gloves, beanie under helmet, and possibly my foot covers. Temperatures between -10 & 0 (14-32*F)... all of the above, plus an extra pair of socks, a cotton long sleeve shirt over the cycling shirt, full finger winter cycling lobster claws, beanie and balaclava under helmet, long underwear under tights. (The lobster claw gloves give you the added warmth of having your fingers together like mittens, with the ability to grab the brake with one finger, while keeping the rest of your hand on the bars for better control). You get the picture... you layer up and if you get hot, take off a layer... but better too hot then too cold. Cold rides are very unpleasant, hot rides are the norm. I would think ordering online from REI (or MEC in Canada) is a good way of getting gear that isn't locally available. Thanks for the input Bopper - I'm sitting here laughing to myself about the lobster claw gloves!! They actually had them at my local bike store. They were shipped my mistake over a year ago and sitting in a box in the back room priced at $75.00 each - never sold 1 pair!! The guy I usually deal with said to make him an offer but I might use them this week and not again for 25 years!! I guess when its this cold in FL you plan around riding the bike assuming the weather will warm up tomorrow. BTW - What is a balaclave?? Again thanks for the advice - I'll layer up and wear what I have available and I like the idea about the wool socks!! I just stole a pair our of my wifes drawer that are too big for her and she never wears (I dont own any). Toasty toes and warm ears and I should be ok. BTW - just heard the local news and there is a 35% chance of SNOW here on Saturday am!! I live in Lakeland which is between Tampa and Orlando - havent seen snow on the ground in FL since 1975~!! |
