This reminds me...I've read that it's smart to save your legs on the swim. Luckily, I rarely kick to begin with unless I'm sprinting. Usually this "front quadrant" swimming advice says to kick in the last part of your swim to get some blood into your legs before exiting the water. I've never given it that much thought in a race. Had anyone tried using this technique?

I have heard this too.  However, my kick is pretty much non-existent.  I have a two-beat kick at best.

Last night I was able to squeeze in 45 minutes on the trainer after dinner while my gf watched her new favorite show "Parenthood".

I'm swimming tonight for the first time in the last three weeks. The pool has been shut down for a new filtration system. My Wildflower Oly is in 10 days and I've been slacking!

That is right around the corner.  I was thinking about doing the Wildflower HIM, but my race series kicks off on the same day.  So, I'll be up in Cool (Auburn) trying to kill myself cycling 24 hours solo.

Meulen - 2010-04-22 2:02 PM I planned on riding tonight but it's supposed to be in the 40's tonight.  Being I didn't feel that good yesterday and not exactly 100% today I think I'll pass.  I'll try to do some weight training and maybe a swim tonight.

Dont feel bad even if I feel 100% I won't ride outside unless it is firmly in the upper 60's... Call me a wimp..LOL!!
living so cal i used to be a huge weather wimp. this winter i have run in the high 20's on some mornings with only shorts a long sleeve and gloves. and loved it.

I'll run in colder weather than I'll Ride a bike...Wind chill isn't as bad, but even then that is why God gave us treadmills LOL!!

I got six mile run in this morning before having to go to the dentist.  My rehab is slow, but progressing.  It's hard not to just go out and run!

On the way home, I decided to pick up a new pair of running shoes.  I'm going to try a shoe with a little more stability for a while and see what happens.

Going to hit the pool this afternoon.  It's been a while; this is probably not going to be very fun.

Say whaaaaaa??!!!?!?! 24hr ride? Man. 4 hours in the saddle on Saturday seemed like a lot. I can't imagine being only 1/6th done at that point. My legs were ready to fall off.

Hey David (Norcal), are you going to come down to Xterra Del Valle and race with us?  May 8th.  Should be a fun course very similar to Folsom.

makes sense.  I could do that if I'm wearing a wetsuit (or using a pull bouy), but in normal swimming I have to keep a decent kick going or my rear end sinks...  My kick has no particular timing connetion to my body at this point, it's not 2 beat, 6 beat, or anything consistent like that, I just sort of kick.  Another thing to add to the LOOONG list of things in my swim stroke that need work. No, it's on the same day as my kids' school spring festival (it's sort of a big deal around our house).

dhopman - 2010-04-20 6:27 PM It looks like I'm a little late trying to join a group...but "closed for now" left a little room for negotiation I hope. =)

I'm Dave - 28 years old in California (Silicon Valley), did a couple triathlons in 2006 then took a break from the sport while getting my masters. Now I'm getting back into it, training for my first HIM. I come from a swimming/water polo background so I have some experience to offer to the group in that respect. I'm mostly looking for motivation and training ideas from the group.

If the group remains closed, I understand but if there's room to squeeze one more in, let me know! Thanks all.

I agree with Tim, we can take another.

Let us know a bit more about you.  Previous training?  Previous races?  Any running/cycling or just a swimming guru?

R

I was wading through the old pages and somehow missed this one. Sorry!

Some more background: I'm a fish. Started swimming when I was 4 in a rec league, picked up water polo just before high school. Once I started doing year-round swimming/polo I started to get hungry for the competition. I played at a pretty high level through high school on a club team that did well at junior olympics (took 4th our first year playing together). I went to Cal Poly (SLO) for college, played a few years there on the club team but between work and school, I couldn't stay competitive in the pool anymore.

After college, I started doing OWSwims - Alcatraz a couple times and some lake swimming. Did a duathlon (swim/run), then got invited to do the swim leg of a tri relay. I did two tris that same season - a sprint and an Oly. My oly was terrible, but I loved it. I did a number of running events (5/10/12k's, and a half mary), learned to enjoy running for the first time ever. Then came the MBA and I didn't do anything for 3 years (god that sounds bad).

Last year I focused 100% on running. I did 3 half-marys and set a new PR (1:41). I ramped up for my first marathon but ended up with this knee injury (PFPS) and couldn't heal in time. It was a huge set back after 6 months of training, and I'm still battling it. Since then, I've started taking cycling much more seriously, and I'm finally back in the pool which feels great. I've probably cut 15lbs or more since finishing my MBA. I stepped on the scale a few weeks ago while getting an MRI on my knee and I'm at 172lbs (I'm 6'4").

For this year, I have two major goals. First, is completing my first HIM. I'm doing it with 3 others from my MBA program and we're all super competitive type A's. I'd be lying if I said I'd be happy with just finishing...I want to beat my buddies and have a respectable race. I'm not sure if sub-6 hours if reasonable but that's the benchmark in my head right now. The second big goal is completing my first marathon on 10/31. This is less of a competition...staying healthy is going to be huge for me. If I am healthy, I know I can go under 4 hours.

Anyways...that's more background on me. I'm super excited for this race season!!! Looking forward to sharing the journey with you all.

-Dave

Ran hills this afternoon. They kicked my butt pretty good. Drove home and jumped on the bike and took off. Had a nice ride... almost no one on the road, calm winds and high 60s. Smells like spring here. Just got my TI Breast Stroke dvd in the mail this afternoon Smile Looking forward to watching it this weekend.

Ahhh, zoot shoes! I'm tempted to go sockless on the run which I think would require a specialized shoe like zoots, but I'm nervous that I'd still get blisters and putting on socks just doesn't take that much time if you roll them up.

How have they worked for you?

i have the TT 3.0s.  i really like them.  i havent done more than 4 miles in one shot yet, but the ONLY thing i notice is a little rub from the top of the heel because its so high up my leg.  and i dont mean like blistering rub, just that i notice it on my leg.  AFA the inside goes, i have zero issues w/ not wearing socks.  a quick dab of body glide would probably take care of any issues that arise anyway, but i wouldnt hesitate to wear these on a 1/2 marathon.  and i went into these wearing double layer socks and body glide all on my feet the time.  they are a great shoe IMO.

ok, dumb question.  how long does it take to get used to the shifters only being on the aero bars?  i never gave it much thought until i actually got on the bike yesterday and as im spinning away im thinking, 'hm, i wonder if this is going to be a problem on hills or turns'.  obviously this isnt a problem as ALL tri bikes have this, but my non cycling a ss will probably crash while shifting :X

Well I Must apoligise to my Bikes for neglecting them while I ran my a$$ off all winter. I took my MTB out for a 1/2 trail 1/2 road ride around the hood and it paid me back for all the neglect by kicking my a$$. At about mile 10 of the ride I had to stop where a trail crosses a street when I steped out of the peddle my calf cramped and I almost fell over and ate $hit right there. I pushed down on my knee to force the foot back to the ground and the cramp stoped so I continued on.  As I got back to the house I saw I was at 13 miles. I was gonna make a couple of extra laps around the block to complete 15 miles but My A$$ couldn't take another second fo seat time.  So I know I need to get my $h!t together and put the bike back into my weekly schedule with some Bricks as well. Damn Im gonna be busy... My bike sucks and I have to learn to swim next month when the pool opens back up... What would life be without new goals to keep us challenged???

Have a good night all..
