Starting to realize I'd rather do 6 five-ten minute workouts a week than three 15 or 20 minute workouts.

Problem with many "easy" plans is that they think 20 minutes is easy six times a week. When I do that I end up injured: I'm an injury prone overweight ectomorph really need to ease back into training, especially have had this annoying cold/bronchitis for about a month now.

So, my new goal is extremely short, but more frequent workouts. For now I'm still sick, just doing every other day enough to get the blood flowing.

The first 10-20 minutes of a workout is always the toughest for me.  It's in that period where my body is a little confused about what I'm doing.  Once the blood starts flowing and my HR settles back down it becomes much easier.

So my advice to you is to try and extend your workouts to 20-30 minutes simply by doing a 10 minute warm up.  Even if it's just walking and stretching.  Let the blood start flowing and send those signals to your body that you're about to work out.  It will make the workout portion much easier and refreshing.  Then end with a nice 5-10 minute cooldown where you stretch/walk/lightly spin at the end.

melbel1038 - 2011-01-18 8:17 PM and how is Krystyna feeling today.  I know if I'm still sore than she has to be x6...

Bahaha, the day after the race my joints ached but I made sure to get a massage post-race and then cool my legs in the lake several times a day since then. I got a massage yesterday to work out all the tightness (especially around the neck, toes, calves and hamstrings). No soreness, but there's still an inability to run, of course. My HR would probably shoot to 1 million bpm if I tried to run!! I'm going to go hiking (easy 2hrs) and swimming today, giving myself a total of about 1 month of doing whatever kind of activity I want (which will include swimbikerun, just no official training).

The people complaining of soreness... is it muscle soreness or achy joints? If it's the former, get yourselves in a cold lake, or cold shower/ice bath - that works wonders!!! :D

That's a good idea, I should give it a shot. Basically talking a walk on my bike or in the pool. It's hard for me to do, but I can do it! Basically rollling along in the pool like one of those octopus things you throw at the wall

What training watches does everyone use?  My wife and I want to get one, but I would like it to be waterproof and accurate.

I use a simple timex watch for running and swimming.  I use mapmyrun.com to get my distance when running outside.  I normally run the same routes, so I don't have to do this all the time.  When racing, I'll use mile markers to judge my pace during the run.

For biking I use a garmin 500.  Mostly for the power reading functions.

Got in my 5 mile run at lunch.  Ho hum...nothing special.  Going to try and swim tonight.  Probably a bunch of 50's and 100's on roughly 1 and 2 minutes.

major progress today.
I never expected this so soon. I am so happy I want to write up a report! lol.

I ran 11k in 49:20.
weather was perfect. I felt perfect. half the time I was thinking ''you are going too fast. you are going too fast''.
I never looked at the watch till km 9 cause I wanted to stop. but it read 40:16. DAMN! I thought you can do this! so I just held on for the dear life for the remaining 2k.

did some intervals in the pool for the first time in a LONG TIME.  Need to do those much more often if I want to see the improvements I'm expecting by June.

Sweet shot!  10X better than I'm going to look if I manage to finish my HIM (I'll probably be on all four's crawling across).  lol!
Love the neon green laces.  I looked all over trying to find the asics I wear in a bright neon color, but to no avail.

Got in a decent ride today.  Had about a 10 mph tail wind for a while for the first half and a 19 mph pace.  Then I came back...finished with a 17.1 pace.  My pea-brain calculated that I was doing about 15 on the way back and the head wind had def picked up.

As I got passed by a superior rider (who I know has completed the Kona IM, and by the way is on the juice) on his cervelo p3, I got to wondering...how much does the bike make a difference is real speed?

Anyone go from a basic tri bike (like my 22 pound aluminum fuji aloha) to an all carbon $5k beast?  how much did your mph improve?

Rest day tomorrow.  Only my 3rd day off this month.

DirkP - 2011-01-16 8:27 PM No training for me today and here's why:  Drunk driving doesn't pay!  This guy broke an 85 foot pole and dropped power to 500 customers and many of them were businesses that will sue for lost revenue.  The cost for us to replace the pole will be $150k.  Someone wanna drink?

I worked 17.5 hours on this pole......double time.

so you are a lineman Dirk?  Dangerous job.  My dad worked for Florida Power and Light for 40 years.

Yeah, well a line crew supervisor now.  I've been doing this work since I was 17 years old.  I started 5 days out of HS with a contractor then hired with a American Electric Power 5 months later.........23 years.  I do transmission work, voltages from 34,000 to 765, 000 and occasionally I work with 12kv.  I have been to Fla. for hurricane Charlie several years ago but that was my only trip.  We worked in Wachula for 12 days.

Hawaiimike - 2011-01-18 10:03 PM

As I got passed by a superior rider (who I know has completed the Kona IM, and by the way is on the juice) on his cervelo p3, I got to wondering...how much does the bike make a difference is real speed?

Anyone go from a basic tri bike (like my 22 pound aluminum fuji aloha) to an all carbon $5k beast?  how much did your mph improve?

Assuming you are well fit on the Aloha...short answer is no...it will not make you much faster.

Weight is of little consequence in TTs and triathlons.  The weight savings you would get from your Aloha to a P3 is about 3-4 pounds.  And most of that is simply from the basebars, extentions, componentry and the wheelset being lighter (when you pay $5k for a bike...you naturally get better extras).

So if we're just talking frames...then what's the difference.  Carbon is able to be made into more aerodynamic shapes than aluminum.  But making aerodynamic shapes often means you use more material.  Look at a P4 frame compared to a road bike frame.  The P4 frame is relatively huge.  It's very aero...but you aren't saving very much weight just because your using carbon.

That being said...how much does an aero frame make?  The general belief is not that much.  90% of the drag created while riding a bike is created by the frontal surface of the rider.  So the key is really to get a bike that puts the rider in the most aero position.  And a position that rider can sustain for the entire bike portion of his/her race.

Just like any line of bikes...some bikes are created to be "more aggressive" than others.  The Aloha is an entry level bike, and not designed to put the rider in an ultra aggressive and aero position.  So assuming you can handle a very aggressive position, then moving to a more aggressive frame (likely a more expensive carbon one...but not always) may prove to be beneficial.  Again...this assumes you can hold the position for the whole race.  There is no benefit to a more aggressive bike if you have to sit up half the time.

97 min ride plus warm up cool down yesterday, kind of gave me an oh dang this is what I signed up for?!? moment, but pushed through and finished still on the spinner at the gym though, having trouble removing old rear cassette from my bike, what was standard in 1980's isn't now so my dept doesn't have the part trying to improvise...  ran after strength workout today like usual nothing special 28 min for 2.5 miles I can never seem to run as fast on treadmill as I can on the street.

Just recieved an iPod touch for christmass and have been playing with apps, is there one that anyone uses for training logs?  Sometimes it's several hours before I can get back to a computer to log on here and I forget exact distances/times
