Mondays bike was fatiguing due to inadequate recovery last week. Todays tread mill run went well. I was able to sustain max pace of 6.5 mph for approx. 10 minutes, a good foundation for this months running goal.

D001 - 2011-02-24 5:29 PM Well, I'm out of training for awhile. Went to the doctor yesterday. She didn't like the 'all that wheezing,' so I had to have a bunch of x-rays and stuff. I got a bunch of new prescriptions, and I'm going to be out of commission for awhile. I'm signed up for 5K races in March, April and May. I'm pretty sure that March one isn't going to happen, but I'm still hopeful on the other two. Oh well. Life happens. On the plus side, I guess that I can rechannel my 'workout time' into 'computer time.' Oh wait -- I always make sure I have plenty of computer time. LOL

Dee,
Haven't heard form you in a while. Hope your recovering and doing well

So I had a long talk with L yesterday about the swimming issues. She brought up a very good point: I was doing great until January and have gone really downhill since then. Which of course, coincides with my registering for the tri December 31. We talked about whether I was ready to do 800m or whether I should set my sights on 400m in Colorado in August. She thinks it may be a good idea. I was all set to go for it, but Brian and I talked about it afterwards. Unless there is a complete government shutdown with resulting pay cheque delays, we'll be going down that way for our vacation anyways. He said "I think you can do it. What happens if you get into the water and have to turn around and get out, can you still do the rest of the tri?". No, I get disqualified. So he said, "but at least you tried, right?". And he's right. If I get into the water and freak out and have to get out, at least it's 200 meters more of open water than I've done. So I'm going to keep plugging along with the goal of doing it. If I panic and have to get out, I have to get out. But if I can keep it together and just go from point A to B to C etc. then I'm going to be much happier with myself.

So, 45 minutes at the pool today. Concentrated on trying to do the continuous exhale. No idea how far I went - did 25s with paddles and pull buoys, just pull buoys, and then just freestyle. The good news is that I was able to breathe every 4th stroke fairly comfortably with the new breathing pattern. I don't know if it will translate into swimming longer, but so far it seems okay. I told L about trying the continuous exhale yesterday, so she's interested to see if it makes a difference. She doesn't do that, she holds her breath and is a competitive swimmer, so I'm not sure. I'm just trying to find something that will work for me. I definitely think I don't panic as much as I do when I'm holding my breath.

I love the challenge forum. It's the main area I spend time on BT.

Really? I've never been there. Maybe I should check it out....

Thank you!

I'm still not able to work out, although I am finally able to climb some stairs without having a coughing fit -- so things *are* improving.

The new meds appear to be working OK. So hopefully, I'll be doing at least some light activity again soon. I'll probably start by just doing some walking, and take it from there.

My March Goals:
1) Take all my meds -- and take them on time!
2) Return to activity. (But don't overdo it immediately.)
3) Get more sleep. (I've been really bad with this lately.)

There's a saying around here: DNF is better than DNS. ("Did Not Finish" is better than "Did Not Start.")

I like your idea of going and trying it. Worst case, you'll stop but gain some OWS experience. Best case, you'll finish the event.

Goals for March-- I'm satisfied with my training program progress after flu recovery so I guess it's time to step it up.
1) Get back on the diet.  I'm at 219 now so goal is 215 by end of month.
2) increase run intensity.  last run of month will be 10k  with a goal of 6.3 mph average pace.
3)Change program to swim focus by adding another swim per week and focus on speed drills.

How long did it take for you to recover from the flu?

It took almost 2 week to fully recover. I'd recommend substitute  of hot tub for the pool for swim training. I hear your abut the stairs. My first week back to work, a flight of stairs felt like a 5k race.

I agree! During your wave stay to the back and let everyone else head out first, then go. Just stick to it and you will eventually get to the end of the swim. I had a very bad swim my first (and only at this point) tri. Very bad! But I just stcuk to it and eventually came out on the other end with the next wave. It's okay!

Good question Jeff! Your question sent me on a quest to find the answer, but unfortunately there is nothing in the Triathlete Training Bible or either of my running books about negative split training. I did a little searching online but not much came up in terms of frequency of use during training. I suggest that you head over to the training forum and ask, that way someone with experience doing negative split training can help.

30 minutes on the trainer - went pretty well although I think I may try a new seat. We have a couple hanging around here so I'll see if it's the seat or my butt. Got my cadence up to 95-99 for a few minutes, which made me happy.

I had a great swim today with a 2 min 03 sec/100 meter average  which reminded me of a personal goal. Reviewed my long-term goals and noticed I missed listing so I will add to this months goals.

4) Break 2 min/100m average for sustained swim workouts.

I did  some surfing on the subject and I will check the training forum. I have already set up my heart rate monitor to trial in next few days. Thanks and if I find any info I will pass along.

I currently have a Polar without GPS. I just got it last season so I told myself I have to wait until 2012 to get a Garmin with GPS.

My plan was to add another day in my weekly training plan for running. After consulting will a local and triathlon and ski expert I've been convinced to continue building on base as I have and save pace and tempo training for later in the season. Just looking to change things up a bit since most of my training is indoors and monotony is a byproduct of  hours on a stationary bike and tread mill. When I do implement Negative split I will use the model below  for 5k.

Mile 1     11:18/5.3 mph
Mile 2     10:21/5.8 mph
Mile 3      9:41/6.2 mph
Mile.1      9:05/6.6 mph

After reviewing my logs I just wanted to pass on advice I've just gained. "...Be confident in your base building plan and It will pay dividends later. " Advice from a nationally ranked skier and mentor.
