Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tri shorts or cycling shorts or both? That is the question. I'm looking into these, and am wondering if I really need both. I get that I need a separate swim jammer for training in the chlorine pool. But can I just get a pair or tri shorts to use for bike training, instead of getting a separate pair or cycling shorts? Any recommendations? I'm specifically looking at this pair. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Scott, so many people forget to keep the chain clean and wonder why it wears out all their parts. Whats an easy bike for you ? 200 miles at threashold? lol
Tim: that video is funny as heck, I used to teach a Tri specific swimming class and made people swim through people creating waves/splashing with kick boards. All the new people thought I was nuts until they did their first race.
Naked Kevin, how are you doing adjusting to not being on vacation?
Keith, if you have a wetsuit and neoprene hat you will be fine. Heck IMCDA was 54 deg. Freaking too my breath away when I went in. Made me have an asthma attack,, great start to a 2.4mile swim!!!!

I would advise to only wear tri shorts. I train/race in them. If you train in cycling shorts you get used to alot more padding then when it comes to racing your butt starts to hurt. Even if I am going for a long bike just for fun the tri shorts work just fine.

![]() | ![]() Let me start by saying that I love recovery weeks! Scott- nice to facebook meet you George- I have one pair of tri shorts, 3 pairs of bike shorts (all of which are dirty right now!). Unlike coach, I say why be in pain when it's unnecessary?! Maybe I should wear my tri shorts more often... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cool, coach. That's what I was thinking. Tim, hilarious video. Two thumbs up. I have a question for the group about swimming. I'm getting the hang of pacing, breathing, and not thinking about running while running. But I can't seem to do the same for swimming. I find myself often out of breath every 50-100 meters. I'm breathing every 3 strokes. I'm kicking sparringly (as recommending by coach here, which worked really well for me after some experimentation). I tend to really be focusing on my form, thinking at EVERY moment about what EVERY part of my body should be doing - arms, legs, head, hip, hands, feet, etc. I'm trying to relax while thinking. However, unlike running where I can still breath if I'm thinking about my form, I can't breath if I'm focused on my form while swimming. As a result, my heart starts to race, and I need to stop and breath. Any tips on how to get to that "zone" when you're just pacing and can swim without stopping every 50-100 meters?

Yeah, it was a really good game. If you're gonna lose though, it may as well be to the #1 seeded team |

I'm the same way. I can get in a good 50-100 meters before I start having to take a breath every couple of strokes. I've heard that it'll get better with more time in the water but any tips/comments/advice would help me out a lot too! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Talk to KC - he went through the same thing. I would say try changing your breathing to every other stroke once you start to get short of breath. It is very difficult to hold that every 3rd stroke. When I first started swimming I had a co-worker tell me the same thing and now I use the 2 stroke breathing BUT I still work on my 3 stroke breathing so I can comfortably switch sides in a race if needed (waves, sun, etc...) I also would alternate every 50Y with breathing on right adn then do 50Y breathing on left just so that I was comfortable with both sides. I think everyone has their own opinion and all the coaches and books say use the 3 stroke breathing - but everyone is different and it just didn't work for me. Once you can stop worrying about breathing you will relax automatically. gkao - 2011-04-27 1:16 PM . I'm getting the hang of pacing, breathing, and not thinking about running while running. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Totally agree with Dave on this one. I also only train in Tri Shorts. For some reason I get really uncomforatble in my bike shorts and just don't use them much (only when tri shorts are in laundry-haha). You have to condition your butt to sit on that seat for hours so you might as well make it hurt during the trainign and get used to it then be uncomforatble during the race. razorxp - 2011-04-27 1:04 PM gkao - 2011-04-27 1:58 PM I would advise to only wear tri shorts. My sleep pattern is still way off....I have 1 training day in on Monday (last night I was at the philly flyers game 7) My run on Monday was a good one...just a nice pace. I would like to do a 40-50 minute run tonight. I need to work out my training plan as i am ~ 2 1/2 weeks from my first race. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team - hope you are all having a great day. George - I would say Tri shorts and I like the ones you are looking at - I think I may buy a pair. As far as swimming goes, I am still having that issue but Coach got to me and convinced me that breathing ever stroke cycle (every 2 strokes I guess) would be a good way to start since I was killing myself doing only bilateral (every 3 strokes). I am big on doing as much bilateral or every 3 as I can because of a neck injury I had late last year and the need to make sure I keep my neck moving both ways to avoid injury. Now I do every 3 for a couple of laps, then switch back to every 2 on my left then on my right and that equals 100 meters for me. It is working. I also am experimenting with 2 left, 1 right, 2 left, 1 right, 1 left, 2 right etc. I am a long way from being comfortable breathing but it is getting better. Also, seems to help me thinking about looking down to swim and back to breath. One other thing I am trying to remember is to also breath whenever I need it - meaning if I am doing a lap breathing every 3 strokes and for some reason I blow out my air to quickly or don't take enough in or happen to grab some pool water as well, I will break the cycle of every 3 and just breath on one side until I relax again. Hope that all made sense. I am a long way from being good yet but it is getting incrementally better. Also, check this article out, it might help and I have a ton of videos on breathing from youtube if you want them. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2188 OK - off for a windy run - hope I don't get caught in the rain - swim tonight! KC

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Second that! Wow. I can't believe how he did all the little transition things that we take for granted so easy. I will say that I think he got his wet suit off faster and more gracefully than I ever have. Also did you notice the moron in the crowd at the very end who went to give him a high five then pulled back when he realized what he was doing and most likely was gonna be left hanging and just patted him on the back? cheekymonkeys1 - 2011-04-27 3:22 PM Wow. All I can say is slow things down until you get comfortable then slowly build your pace. Once you get where you can go for a while without having to stop, you can push the pace where you are uncomfortable to increase pace. That is where drill come into play also, you can do a warmup (just swim don't think) then some drills , Then sets of speed work, then cool down and just swim. |
