I actually managed to pull off a pretty good race today.  Was 16th overall and had my fastest ever 5k split in a sprint tri by a few seconds.  With a little swim and bike training I probably could have done a little better, but given that lack of training I was quite pleased with the result.  I'll post a report in the next day or two.

No rest for the weary though.  I had to go out and run 12 miles this afternoon to get in my Sunday 15. Quite exhausted now

Good morning guys!  I just finished a short ride to test out the race setup on the bike.  I've got a sprint tri tomorrow that I'm a little under prepared for.  Should be fun.

What does everyone else have on tap?  Kevin has his marathon this morning.  Any other racers?

Hey Neal - Speaking of races - how'd your race go?  Hope you had a great time and are satisfied with your time even if you weren't totally prepared!

Moonrocket - 2012-05-19 9:56 PM Good luck! I don't have a race but had fun today checking out the trails that the Xterra I signed up for is on. It was a fun not technical ride which was perfect. We only did one and a half laps of a two lap course since it started raining pretty good. It was a lot of fun though. The run looks brutal. I'm going to have to go check it out another day, but it's two miles of switchbacks up! I don't really know how to train for that kind of a hill. I'm also getting worried about nutrition as I think the whole race is going to take me a long time.

Wow - sounds like you signed up for a beast of a race!  From your description - it sounds awesome.  Switch backs are better than heading straight up the hill.  Why not take a nice slow practice run next week?  As for nutrition - don't worry... just make a plan and then practice it during your training!  Good luck!

yogachic - 2012-05-17 9:30 PM

Ugh, so I've noticed my limp from last year was back this week.  I think it's because I did a 5-mile run in these shoes I don't normally run in.  I generally have a hard time running in new shoes and have tons of aches and pains until I break them in.  So I usually rotate between 3-4 pairs to give the newer pair(s) a chance to be broken in while still doing my longer runs in the shoes I'm used to.

The pair I wore on Monday were actually from a while back, but they got "lost" in my closet.  They only have about 60 miles on them.  I re-found them about a month ago and have done shorter runs (track practice or easy 3-milers) with no problem.  On Monday, I ran 5 in them and felt fine, but then walked home in them after my run (about 3 miles).  I noticed it right away that my calf and hip were tightening up!  Maybe 8 miles was too long to be wearing those shoes Undecided  I was hoping it would sort itself out, but it hasn't yet....

Anyways, today I was supposed to do track practice, but decided to do yoga instead since I didn't want to run with a limp.  I have to get this hip/calf thing sorted out!  Luckily the teacher focused on hips tonight, and I could totally feel my tight hips and calves stretching out!  I also foam rolled after.... Owwwww.  If I'm limp-free tomorrow, I may sneak out in the afternoon and do my track workout (coach sent me my workout).

Sorry to hear that your hips are bugging you but was glad you, Yogachic, were able to get in a good session of yoga to stretch out those muscles.

I too have a love hate relationship with my foam roller... Get better soon!

BUST!

I missed my goal by 2:45.  Total time 3:32:45.  This is a PR for me at this distance.

This is my attempt to put a link of the race report here, hope it works.Laughing

Bummer on missing your goal. It sounds like a pretty darn good effort at hitting though! How are you feeling today?

Thanks! It seems like a beast to me! We're headed up to the location of DH's Xterra for the long weekend to camp and bike and run. So, I won't get to do the actual course, but there is definitely some good hilly trail running to do. I did a timed 750 this morning trying to hold a good pace for being able to bike after and hit 11:24. I was a little disappointed - I definitely have to get some more swimming in. Then I did another 1:10 mtn bike ride which I felt really strong on. So I ended on a good note. My new mtn bike has 29" tires and can hold some speed :-).

I felt fine all day yesterday, and feel so exhausted today, everything's sore, but nothings injured.  I'm taking a Recovery week on the HIM plan next week so have an easy swim planned for tomorrow with mostly easy week ahead before I hit it hard again.

Wow - I think I've over trained.  I really pushed it this weekend.  My hips hurt for the first time in months and I'm exhausted... I was supposed to bike today but decided that a rest day was called for.    I will go for a swim tomorrow and try to get back on track.

Sorry you're feeling fatigued, but nice job listening to your body and taking some extra rest.  Sometimes that's the hardest thing to do when you've got a schedule to keep.  Hope the extra rest helped!

Glad to hear that even though the swim was a little tough - you were able to have a good bike and run.  Excellent work and thanks for the motivation!  Any beer floats by any chance?

Damn - I pushed myself to hard and now my back hurts and the bursitis in my hips is back.  I thought I had said adieu to that old friend about a month ago.  I've spent time time getting my back and hips worked on by my school trainer and have only swam the last three days.  I plan on heading out for a 30 minute bike ride just so I don't go nuts.

Lesson learned - its better to only get 3/4 of a workout in than to push it only to miss 3x the amount of time...

Hey, if anyone's looking for a half or full active.com swaggle is offering half off the HITS fort Collins race. July 29. Supposed to be cold and hilly. Interestingly 9 people have bought in!

Injuries are no fun.  Put the time into getting better, streching and icing.  You got better once, you know what to do to get well again.

Just got my wetsuit in the mail today, and am about to go try it on.  I'm going to train exclusively outdoors now, and am excited.  I've never been in a lake to excercise, and need to practice.  I figure I can get comfortable working on transitions as well that way.

I hope everyone is doing well!

I had a 5k this past weekend. I wouldn't say I performed too well, but it was definitely a great workout. The name of it was "End of the Mountain 5K" ...I was kind of hoping that meant "in the valley". No, it meant the SIDE of the mountain. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful setting, with some friendly people, so I'll call it a success.

I will take a beautiful day in a beautiful location for a 5k over an easy, boring run everytime.

Great job doing the 5k!

What is next up for you?

Hi guys!

I just got caught up in the thread and read some of your race reports!  Nice work, all!

I've been foam rolling my calves like crazy since my plantar fasciitis started flaring up last week.  Ugh.  I've been able to run, albeit slowly.  I've actually been afraid of getting on my bike since last year biking aggravating it a lot.... Trying not to make the same mistakes as last year, so my foam roller has become my best friend this past week!

Also, lesson learned.  When breaking in newer shoes, make sure to only use them for the run, and not walking around afterward!  I'm hoping this is just a hiccup, though!  Last year, I was able to return to running after cutting back my bike mileage and massaging the crap out of my legs.  If this PF doesn't go away again soon, I'll call up my massage therapist and see if he can fix me up!

I braved it on monday and hit up a local lake!! It's a shallow one so warmer, felt great to get into the lake already! Spent about 30 min in the water and was not too bad!
