Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() spokes - 2007-11-30 8:56 AM Growing up in Des Moines, we never really had enough snow to learn to enjoy winter. We'd usually get a dirty, icy blanket of 6" that would half melt, then it would cloud up, the wind would blow out of the NW for weeks and it would drop below zero. That's not winter, that's punishment. Oh, yeah...I'm pretty sure only in Iowa do they cancel COLLEGE CLASSES because its so bleep-in cold...happened at least once when I was there. They said if we walked across the Pentacrest improperly bundled we'd get frostbite in less than a minute. Sweet. I love Iowa. Kristen |

Yeah, um, as Garrison Keillor would say about Minnesota... the Men are handsome, the children are above average and the women are strong (think hardy, northern european - LOL). I remember walking to engineering school in WI in winter... 1 mile each way to save on parking fees: long underwear under jeans, boots, multiple layers on top.. face covered with only the eyes exposed. As a kid, I had one of those "snorkel" parkas... perfect for when I was an illustrious crossing guard (LOL). |

Oh and no "Who's turn is it to shovel the driveway?"Good morning back at you, Pam. After growing up in Illinois and Wisconsin, I then spent eight years in Indiana and five in Georgia. The first winter back in the north was both painful (brrrr) and delightful. I finally understood why the Eskimos have so many different words for "snow". I must admit that living in GA really spoiled me... only scraped my car windows once/year, and taunted friends and family who lived in the great white north. Uh...no. One Saturday I asked my 11-yr-old to go out a get the mail. I think it was 10 degrees out. He runs out in a t-shirt, jeans and BAREFEET. I think my kids have gotten pretty hardy (and have frozen brain cells) since we've lived here. |

Otherwise, there's no good reason to live there, other than cheap housing. Well, not even cheap housing. Average price for a 2000 sq ft 'starter home' in the Minneapolis suburbs probably runs about $240,000. But WE love it here. Great people. Excellent schools. Lots of fitness-focused people...well, at least the ones I know. We'll be here until the kids graduate from high school... |

I grew up in the Northern NY snowbelt region, I loved winter as a kid and young adult.
