I am a fan of TI but for the clinic you are only one of many in a class and there is not a lot of individualized instruction.  After the clinic (and the subsequent price increase) I think Terry is maximizing his return on the popularity of tris.  And I DO NOT BLAME HIM FOR THAT.  I am a capitalist and he can charge whatever the market will bear.  I think you are better at getting return on investment by using a coach in private instruction or with two or three others.  Many coaches are looking at 75 to 100 per hour in the Dallas area.  Most coaches teach ABOUT the same thing with different names.  On the Total Immersion website, you can look for the section "locate a coach" and there may be one in the area.  I would be talking to other triathletes in the area...many of them know someone.  Here is ideal in my mind: a lesson on Monday for 30 minutes, swim - practice what you learned Wed and Fri....another lesson 30 mins on Monday....swim and work wednesday and friday....you get the drift.  I think the 30 min time is plenty to get some ideas to perfect that week....that is one drawback to a 2 day clinic...it is all crammed in there - one thing after another....not much time to build and practice.

Happy with my "long workout" today - 48 minute bike and 24 minute swim.  Nothing fancy, just an even moderate pace.

I don't have a roller, or an awesome wife, but I have pretty good luck with a tennis ball.

Bryan - for some reason I can't use that link and I don't want to miss an assignment. What is the title of the article?

Chuckling here as some of the new people are getting to know all of us. For years, this has been a "no hurt feelings" zone. If necessary, ask someone to explain. It is difficult to be funny or sarcastic via forum posts but it seem to work with this group. Go figure. bunch of crazy people I guess. What a group!

I am so glad that I found such a great group! And with that I am going to get it going as Bryan just touched on it.

Do people really pee while on the bike?  Are they that worry that stopping for a few minutes will hurt their time that much?  I just don't understand the need. Then again I have yet to ride 112 miles in a race so I guess I shouldn't say anything.  But who wants pee on their bike?

Kathy, Thanks... I have a co-worker who lives in Watkinsville and drives thru Monroe twice a day.  If you would rather ship it, that is fine, but if you would be comfortable with a quick hand-off that would work as well.

PS.  Haven't even had to consider whether to Pee on my Bike as of yet!.... but interested to hear everyone's answers!!!

Just added to my Race List a Sprint that I will be doing in May.  Not sure if it automatically adds it to the entire system or not.

Its a Reverse Sprint, so should mess me up good before my first "normal" Sprint in June!!

Monte, what is the longest distance tri you are doing this year? I'd say you don't have to worry about it until you get up to a half-ironman distance (or, according to Billy, ever hehehe)..

ok, so i will share this.. Wetsuit is fair game, but I never considered peeing on a bike until my half-ironman Racine, and only because I saw and wanted a shirt that said, "I pee on my bike" lol And then, when I was going to do it, just so I could get the shirt, I couldn't! You can read my RR, but my first half-ironman was of a crazy variety, and the last 32 miles of the bike I had a police escort, so with two officers on my tail, there was no way to do it... Now you know all my dark tri secrets..

Billy - is the only one amongst the family that will not admit to warming the wetsuit.  But I never pee on carbon.  Part of my race day ritual is arrive at the venue, get in line to pee.  Then get back in line to pee again.  Run around a bit to stay warm and see whos here, then get back in line to pee.

One of my running mentors, John "The Penguin" Bingham author of Marathons for Mortals, once said if you're running and you see porta pot without a line stop.  When I run and I feel the urge, it's usually just nerves because I already went three times before the start of the race.  Fit's corollary, If you ever see John interviewing someone at an event expo, stop and listen, you will be entertained and inspired.

The Penguin changed my life and made so many things possible.  When I first started running my idea of good training was to run to the end of the driveway as fast as I could until I nearly blacked out and collapsed.  I would then limp back to the couch.  It would take a week to recover and then I would go out run as fast as I could to the mailbox and stop gasping for air.  I was quite a sight as I worked up to the gasping mile.  When i learned pacing at found I could reach 3 miles. yeah.  Then 5 miles without injury.  I really started to like running when I experience my first "Runners High".  I the past couple of years I've run 3 full marathons, and at least 20 half mary's.  All these acomplishments since I started running just 4 years ago.

His story is my story.  "The miracle isn't that I finished.  The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

Mark, that is amazing!!!! I had no idea you had close ties to John Bingham!

DId you know that his line, "The miracle is not that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start".. my friend Shawna and I had shirts made for our first marathon 2 years ago and we had that line put on there? I'll be back with a pic!

  • .. and here is how I met John Bingham:
  • I was about to run my first half-marathon ever, years ago, and scared to death.. mainly of the "what if i have to go number 2, and there is no porta potty?" (yes, i'm admitting it out loud, it's my biggest fear in any running race, after hearing enough stories)... so I'm at the Expo, picking up my packet and asking this volunteer girl about the bathroom situation.
She says, "I really don't know, but he might..." and points to this guy...
This guy turns to me and I repeat my question, saying how nervous I am because it's my first HM...
He says, " Well, my name is John Bingham, nice to meet you. Here is a VIP tent pass, hopefully it will make your race day less stressful" ... and hands me the VIP sticker.

    Small world, eh?

I'll let our IronPeople answer this more completely, since I've only done one HIM. But even then, in training, and during the race, you are hydrating so much (and I'm a slow rider) that I can totally see the appropriateness of such an ghastly activity. Even in my HIM, it was a very long day.. (ok, a NORMAL HIM would have been a long day, mine was just plain loony), and there are so many dynamics involved, it's really hard to explain... for example, the day of my race actual temps were 101 and NO shade on the bike and most run, so drinking all you can take in was a must if you didn't want to pass out. That's one factor. Time, muscle fatigue, exhaustion, mental and physical focus, concentration... many more factors on a deeper level in full Ironman, I'm sure... so when my time comes for a full Ironman, I can totally see peeing on the bike a possibility.. though not a must experience...

Is that a shark in the pool 'da DA da dum ...'. Oh no it's just Monte sneaking up behind the swim coach again.  Being called a Shark in the pool is a high compliment.   If you can find a group to swim with, your swimming will improve.  You'll also have a chance to learn how to draft behind another swimmer.  Triathlon mass starts encourage pack swimming and drafting is 30% easier than swimming off the front.  It's free speed and it's legal.

I just completed 1 HIM and I didn't have to pee till the run.  And I am very much like Mark where I stand in line at the beginning, then get back in line as my nerves always really mess with me.

I have learned that as an Endurance athlete you will go in the woods and I have to agree with that as I have lost count on how many times while running or biking I had to stopped.
