I did the weekend sessn and found that way more beneficial then the video. If the sessions don't fit into your schedule the video does help.Lena, those rollers could be taken the wrong way. I did use my foam roller tonight on my hamstring after my run and it felt good. I put more pressure on the roller and I thi k that was the issue. Thanks a bunch! i will probably take you up on that. I am sure the sessions may end up in my future, but would like to look at the video first. Swam competitively as a youth, so muscle memory is buried deep!!, but if i can build some stamina i should be ok. I would like to experiment with these new techniques and see if i can improve and expedite the process. I am also usually swimming in the pool at my gym around 5:15 in the am, and it appears that many days at this time there is a person giving some instruction. Trying to snoop a bit.. da dum daaaa dum.. ha
Is that a shark in the pool 'da DA da dum ...'. Oh no it's just Monte sneaking up behind the swim coach again. Being called a Shark in the pool is a high compliment. If you can find a group to swim with, your swimming will improve. You'll also have a chance to learn how to draft behind another swimmer. Triathlon mass starts encourage pack swimming and drafting is 30% easier than swimming off the front. It's free speed and it's legal.
Ha... I think at this point I have the speed of the Infamous and Highly Elusive Sea Cucumber!! My Da Dum.. Da dum was actually more meant as the Theme Song from some of those old Detective Shows...AKA Dragnet!! I will try to make some friends at the Gym and work with them and see how that goes. ( how do you draft on the bottom???) Ha... |

Okay, I really give up as my replies are not replying. Once again this is for Monte. Ha!! Gotta hit that quote button and type after the last quote thingie!! My buddy goes thru about 7-7:30 in the am and between 6-6:30 in the pm. He will be travelling all next week, so will have to be after that. We can PM and work out the details, but i am sure that there should be a relatively easy way for you to "effect the transaction" ha.. didn't that sound official? ! |

Regular 133 California | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Helloooooooo everyone! I was new to the group last year and well, still feel like a new person as I didnt get to participate much. I'm a lurker for sure and will try to pop in as I can to see how everyone is doing. I have learned so much even by just lurking and seeing all of the questions and answers go back and forth, love it! I did get to complete my first sprint last year and reached my goal of a)finishing and 2) not being DFL soon after I tried doing some longer runs and found my knees aching toward the end of the run and, at first, for a few days afterward. It was my IT band....not sure if it was just from lack of use over the years or adjusting to new running shoes, or both. I tried for about 2 weeks in late nev, early dec to run but couldnt go past 5 miles without having to stop and then being in pain for a few days walking. my wife bought me a garmin 610 for my bday and i decided to give it a shot new years day...3 miles - NO PAIN, next day 3 more miles - no pain, 2 days later 5 miles - NO PAIN!! i think i'm good now as I am up to 8 miles (ran that dist a few times) with absolutely no pain and in a time of 1:07. (this is my longest dist to date ever!) I am signed up for my first half marathon Feb 5th, it may be a little sooner than I would have liked but 5 week training plan is ok right? After that I am looking at "Avenue of the Giants" Marathon in the beginning of May. Once I have a solid marathon under my belt I will go back to incorporating tri training and look for a HIM. Cheers! -Jeff |

Lyoshka - 2012-01-27 10:14 AM Malsup - 2012-01-27 9:36 AM Monte, what is the longest distance tri you are doing this year? I'd say you don't have to worry about it until you get up to a half-ironman distance (or, according to Billy, ever hehehe).. ok, so i will share this.. Wetsuit is fair game, but I never considered peeing on a bike until my half-ironman Racine, and only because I saw and wanted a shirt that said, "I pee on my bike" lol And then, when I was going to do it, just so I could get the shirt, I couldn't! You can read my RR, but my first half-ironman was of a crazy variety, and the last 32 miles of the bike I had a police escort, so with two officers on my tail, there was no way to do it... Now you know all my dark tri secrets..PS. Haven't even had to consider whether to Pee on my Bike as of yet!.... but interested to hear everyone's answers!!!
Lena, My training started officially on Jan 9th and My intentions are to do two Sprints and one Oly this year.. again.. "intentions" I am probably going to try to add a few mix and matches concerning short runs or bikes. If I can get all that done and have fun and stay healthy.... Then maybe a HIM in 2013 could be in the works?!(my belief is that it will be the running portion of all this that will impact any future decisions) I don't expect to have to make the PEE decision anytime soon, but if i do.. I expect it would be in the water!! Do I get a Cake if I complete my goals??? Ha. Monte

To me, a jump from Sprint to Oly was bigger than from Oly to a HIM, not sure why... I remember vividly how scared I was training for my first Sprint... once you conquer the distance, the fear is gone. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! This is what I love about triathletes.....they talk about anything and it's no big deal. I am also like Mark - I get to the race, pee, get back in line, pee again, etc. I can run a marathon and never have to pee, but put me on the bike and somewhere between 1 hour and 20 miles, I WILL have to pee. I can honestly say, however, that I have never peed on my bike, even during my IM. I did actually make it to mile 40 in the IM before I had to stop and pee. In training I'll just stop anywhere as I'm usually on country roads, but in the IM I did stop at the aid station. Luckily there wasn't a long line. But for me, I'm not going to win an age group spot, so what's a few minutes over the course of multiple hours? Peeing in the wetsuit - now that's a different story. And if the water is really cold at IMAZ this fall, you better believe I'll be peeing in my wetsuit. Word to the wise - if you volunteer at a race, especially an IM, and you do the wetsuit stripping or bike handling, you might want to wear gloves. Just saying. Edited by bar92 2012-01-27 11:41 AM |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! First JEFF - welcome back. Now to the EVER important subject of peeing. ---- during the swim in cold water - you stay a bit warmer. Just be sure to rinse your wetsuit as soon as possible and wetsuit soap is a good idea. Don't leave your wetsuit wet in your transition backpack for two weeks. Bad idea. Although you will get to buy a new backpack. The other reason is length of swim - sometimes it just happens. So go. On the bike - if you are on the verge of qualifying for Kona - or you want a Tshirt then by all means let fly - pee away --- but please be sure I am not passing you as you dribble behind you. Personally for me - I respect my bike too much ( which means I am nowhere close to a Kona slot) to pee on it. BUT MORE THAN THAT - I want you to get off your bike some to stretch anyway so pee when you get off to stretch OR stretch when you get off to pee. I also hope you have to pee on the run (indicates good hydration) and some pee as they run - I will stop. I don't want to run in "pee-y" Newtons the rest of the run. If I am ever close to podium or Kona - NONE of the above applies - I will pee anywhere I should feel the need. (never a real risk) So - there's mine - let the free pee-ers speak now. |

Veteran 201 Long Island | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! You guys crack me up!! All this pee talk, I have to chime in. My second HM was this past fall, my first was last spring. I had two goals, one to finish sub 2hrs 30 min (ambitous for me) and secondly, was to finish without having to pee. I failed on both counts!! Very annoying. I do take sips at each water area, maybe too much?? I always have to stop on the bike. In my HIM I didn't stop to pee at the second rest stop, thought I was ok. I was sooo wrong, 10 minutes past it I was dying. (I thought it was pressure pain. It was not.) Peed like a race horse at the third stop and then felt great for the first time the whole ride. (I didn't want to pee on someone's lawn. The trees there in GA are thinner then our mailbox posts here in NY and I didn't want any one to be horrified going by. Not that there were many riders behind me at this point) Of course, I stopped several times on the run/walk. (And peed many times in the first hour after the race.) Am I over hydrating?? I always urinate plenty so its not an urge without results. Of course I also go several times at the start. I think the only place I don't pee is in the water! (Which I have no problems doing BTW) I just don't have to. Probably because I'm not intentionally hydrating? I must have been typing while RLR was replying. I agree. I am never going to be shy about passing a potty again, unless any of the circumstances he described applies, which is highly unlikely and I'm ok with that. I always say I'm a doer not a competitor. I would rather be 'doing it' comfortably and the stretch is so worth it. I gain so much from a minute reprieve from whatever is challenging me at any given moment. Txs again Bryan!! Hi Guys, I am back on this side of the ocean as of LATE last night and obviously online as I can barely stay awake to work. It seems I have 280 pages to catch up on!!!! I have not been faced w the peeing decision but since I did have a #2 incident of sorts last weekend running thru the woods with my crazy German cousin, I feel those worries are a thing of the past. Whenever it happens and there is not a portapotty around, a tree or my bike will be just fine. I had to laugh out loud realizing I am not the only one lining up before a race multiple times, not even counting the times before i leave for the race My HM is in 2 weeks and my goal is to finish under 2:30. If I don't I will miss the headline show Flo Rida, and my nieces told me I could not... No workout for me today, but hope to get in a long run tomorrow. The weather apparently was really nice while I was gone, 70-80's. Hope it continues What are your plans for the weekend? Pam Brian: congrats on IMC!! |

If I will be near you please let me know as it would be fun to meet up. |

Member 46 Richmond Hill | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Wow - not sure if it was the "pee" topic, or it being Friday as Monte mentioned, but just got home from work and see there were 40 new posts! First, for the record, you guys will have to really work hard to offend me, but I was also a bit tentative to make any jokes that may not be taken so well (I started to make a joke in reply to Billy's "don't want to see your junk" comment - but was concerned it may be inappropriate). So, this "pee-ing" topic ......... Since I've only done one sprint and nothing longer, I fully recognize my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. Wetsuit - no problem - I was a scuba diver for a few years (therefore the username "benttwice"), and have had to do #1 several times in my wetsuit (never, never #2!!!!). Pee-ing on the bike - I don't know about that! Bikes are my hobby, my second love (just in case my wife sees this, otherwise it might move up in the ranking ), so I just don't know if I can bring myself to defile any of my bikes. Maybe going for a podium spot (not likely for me!) or Kona (as Bryan says) - otherwise, I think I'll dismount and take care of business. I've done bike events ranging from 5 hours to 10 hours duration, can't say I've ever considered peeing on my bike. I did a marathon last November and it took me just over 5 hours (not so proud of that!), but I never stopped to pee - nor did I pee in my panties! Of course I realize there is another 112 miles on the bike and 2.4 miles of swim in an Ironman, so that changes everything! Next topic????
